  1. A few patches of Mixi on the Gower at Llangennith.
  2. With a talent like that and such majestic birds you should be encouraged to share your experiences with us. I have always wanted to keep hawks, but I am also so aware of the work and commitment that goes into caring for them properly that I am waiting until I can devote the time to do it right. I intend to start with a Harris when ready and maybe move up to a falcon when I have learned enough to ensure the bird is trained correctly. I will be fully retired in two or three years, so that is when I will start. Until then, I for one would very much appreciate you posting the odd story and pictures to match. Thanks Bing-Bong, keep em' comin. Regards. Tony.
  3. Fantastic job. Never tire of watching a good ratter. Word of warning (which I am sure you are fully aware of but others may not be) never put a dog to rats unless it has been fully inoculated against Weil's disease. This is a killer of dogs and will only take a few days to take effect. I know this by bitter experience.
  4. One rifle for all there is no way I would get drawn into this one. However -- I have taken everything from fox to reds with a .243 loaded with 58g to 95g for fox and 100g for all deer up to reds out to 200yds. I have never had any problems with the .243 other than the crack without a mod, but I'll have to agree with Harnser and state that my .308 is my all time favourite. In my humble opinion, the finest all round calibre for the UK, if you could only have one rifle. Abundant ammo that is reasonably priced and most .308 rifles are not too fussy on what they eat. Flat it may not be but accurate it definitely is, it will drop anything out to 300yds, which is a very long way, and much further than 99% of what you will ever shoot at in your average shooting life. If you homeload it is great fun and even cheaper, so for me it is the .308 Winchester. Mind you I am definitely bias being an ex 7.62 fanatic (The weapon of choice for competition biathlon 38 years ago).
  5. Devcon HP Titanium Putty. Normally £40 to £50 for 500g but if you are lucky you might see it on fleabay for allot less. I paid less than a tenner for 500g a couple of months ago. Release agent - use boot polish as previously stated and buff well. No shrinkage, no cracks and (If done properly) no bubbles. Easy to do with basic tools and a little D.I.Y. knowledge and great results - rock solid. The internet is a great source of information on how to. Look up pillar bedding and action bedding.
  6. Go on then! I'll take it off his hands and give it a good shooting home - FOC of course.
  7. Couple of pictures of the budget .308 ZKK 601 Barrel and Action Titanium bedded into a homemade Wildcat style Beach Laminated stock, with Bushnell 10X40 mil dot glass. Total cost about £345 (Including glass) A pleasure to shoot and capable of clover leaf results at 150 yds in the right hands with 150gr Balistic Tips and N150 in Norma once fired cases.
  8. ((Does using 7.62 rounds in a rifle chambered for .308 create dangerous pressure issues like the 5.56 round would in a .223 rifle or would a 7.62 round even chamber in a .308 rifle?)) No, but using .308 in a 7.62 would. To all extents and purposes the external dimensions of the rounds are the same, it is the internal dimensions that differ due to the thickness of the brass in military 7.62 rounds being greater than the civilian .308. Military 7.62 rifles have been proofed for a lesser pressure than the civilian .308, therefore it is very unwise to shoot civilian .308 ammunition (Bought or home loaded) in any military weapon of 7.62 X 51 cal. Shooting military ammo in a civilian .308 is however safe for this very reason. In addition, when home loading military brass, it is dangerous to use the same weight of powder you would for civilian loads, again because the thicker brass of the military cartridge will lessen the internal volume available thereby increasing the pressure unless you reduce the powder weight. I shoot a CZ601 ZKK in .308, the barrel and action of which, has been pillar and full action bedded in titanium putty into a hand built laminated stock with a Bushnell 10x40 mil dot glass. Probably the least expensive way of building a sub moa .308. Total price£300 and some labour but it shoots like a dream. I still have the original stock in very good condition if ever I wished to use it for stalking again, but I must confess that I prefer the .243 for everything from Fox to Reds as my stalking is generally over one to two hundred yards at the most. The .308 is one of the most versatile calibres available and can cope with anything the UK can throw at it in addition to targets out to 800 yds. You can go to 1,000 yds but you are then asking allot from shooter, rifle and ammunition. For 1,000 yds and over there are better-suited calibres available, if you can obtain the requisite authority, which is one of the reasons why the .308 is so popular. In addition, the availability of inexpensive ammunition/components combined with the fact that it is a very kind (As long as you are not on the receiving end) and inherently accurate round makes it a true ‘one-rifle’ choice.
  9. Good result! It just proves that if you keep a cool head and use the right contacts when you get into trouble - it will all work out in the end. I have an open for everything up to .308 (I’ve not had the bottle to ask for a 50 cal as yet) and would confirm that I have had the fullest co-operation from my FLO and all staff involved over the past 30 years and hope that it continues. However it is a common problem that the Firearms Legislation continues to be 'interpreted' by different forces in different ways and until BASC or SACS, or other interested groups that represent the shooting public, get a grip with the Home Office and unify the application process - unfortunately we will continue to see this type of problem. Do not let Mark's experience put anyone off making their application. If you are a 'suitable' person (I am not going to qualify the word suitable as that is for you to interpret in line with the legislative requirements) and have good reason to possess and use firearms in a safe and professional manner, then make your application. Just remember that you are more likely to succeed first time if you can provide all the pre-requisite confirmation and information required by your FLO. If you try to get by on a wing and a prayer, you are playing into the hands of those who would prefer to decline your application. It is not a difficult process so keep a cool head and persevere.
  10. Hi Guys I'm still looking for a stock to fit to a Ugartechea 12 bore boxlock non ej, in serviceable condition or a blank that will suit. If you have anything lying around that might suit - please get in touch. Regards. Celtic Invader.
  11. I am rebuilding an old BSA 12b that is in very good condition with the exception of it's rear (Choke) trigger. If anyone has one, or an old action or trigger plate with the triggers attached I would be interested so please get in touch. Regards. Tony.

  13. Try a speed controller from a scaletrics (spelling?) set. I used one for years, just take the spring off the trigger mechanism and position the trigger where you want in relation to the speed requirements and off you go. Can be quickly adjusted as required. Mine were sprayed to match the colour of the stubble and just left at the base of the rotary. Still going years after.
  14. Made by ZOS in China. ZOS make scopes for many suppliers to include Richter. You get exactly what you pay for. If you want a Chinese scope go to a Chinese company by the name of AMONSTAR on fleabay - their back up service is second to none. I bought a tactical 10 - 40 X 50 SF by Mark Precision Optics of Australia (From Australia). Thought that the description and reviews warranted a gamble but first time out the Tension Spring Cap snapped its thread and popped out of the housing, net result the scope is US without the cap. Found out that it was made by ZOS and Mark Precision Optics could not help, nor could / would all the UK, German and US importers of ZOS (under their many brand names). I contacted ZOS direct (Twice) and they did not even reply. Finally out of desperation I contacted AMONSTAR in China and even though I did not buy the scope from them, they bent over backwards to help - even taking one of their own scopes apart to establish and confirm the part that I required. Correspondence was first class with replies within hours and I cannot praise them too highly. All this for a 10p screw cap that measures 1cm wide. Moral of the storey - If you are going to buy cheap scopes that will probably fall apart in no time - buy from a dealer that will support you when things go wrong. Richter are just like Mark and all the other names that appear on these Chinese scopes, once they have had your money they can't be bothered to respond to any after sales needs, probably because they are not able to because they all know as much about scopes as Donald Duck. These companies are only importers that have ZOS put their names on the scope during manufacture. (And do not believe the rumours that the Chinese Army use them either) The alternative is to buy from Zeiss, Meopta, Leupold, Swarovski etc. and know that you will get a 1st class scope with a first class back up service if things go wrong. Or if you are like the vast majority of us penniless bargain hunters who can’t afford to pay hundreds for a proper piece of glass - 'you pays your money and you takes your choice'. Incidentally I have a Pecar on the .308 now, which although not new is however relatively affordable compared to the above mentioned crème del a crème and is comparable in quality. The only downside is that Pecar are no longer in business for after sales service so I am back to square one, but with less chance of needing their support.
  15. Three poles (Green bean plastic cane type 6' high) from B&Q and tie them together 8" from the top.
  16. G96 Gun Blue - £9 on Flea bay. Have used this for years for small to full barrel jobs and swear by it. The cold blue process will never be as hard wearing as the traditional hot blue process, but if done properly, it will last surprisingly well. The main issue is, as with all things, the preparation work. The more time cleaning, polishing, and finally de-greasing the metal that is to be blued - the better the finished work. Do not handle the work with bare hands during the bluing process and apart from the health and safety aspect, the moisture from your hands will spoil the bluing process. Always wear rubber or surgical gloves that have been well cleaned and de-greased. If you do contaminate the work prior to completion, then just de-grease and start again. The final few coats should be applied with 000 wire wool, which will provide a mirror finish if the preparation work was up to standard to start with.
  17. Some MK 4's were made by Holland and Holland during the war - or so I have been told. This being the case you might pick up a .410 H&H for a song.
  18. A good pair of sucking lips and the palm of your hand. Fortunately, whenever I decide to squeak up Charlie on the spur of the moment, I always have them with me and ready to hand. (No pun intended) Try it - done properly you can call them in from miles. The only downside is that you have to stop squeaking to take the shot, but by then it is too late for Charlie.
  19. Welcome lordofthewings Do not pay too much attention to some of the comments you will see on this forum - always remember that to some it is a serious way of getting a point across, to others it is an escape from the mental confines of life but to all it is a passion. I too have a dislike for empty shells being left about the place and will pick up those I find left lying about. This got me into trouble at one formal shoot that I was asked to 'pick up' (Pheasants that is) at many years ago. Having come off the first drive with literally hundreds of empties in addition to three and a half brace of birds, I was informed by my host that all the empty cases are left at each peg so that he can see who has had the shooting on each drive. The purpose for this being that the day's drives can then be varied to ensure that all Guns receive a fair share of the shooting throughout the day. I offered to replace the empties but was informed that as an accurate count could not be guaranteed I may as well put them in the bin provided at the courtyard. A mistake I have never since repeated on a formal shoot, but when out rough shooting, wildfowling or just walking the dogs - I still pick up those that I see and curse the inconsiderate plonkers that leave them as a sign of good sport.
  20. Reading your post it looks as though you are asking if you can just add a further .22 rim fire or do you have to get permission first. If I have read it correctly - you must ask for permission and get a grant by way of a variation before you can do anything. Once your FAC has been 'varied’, you can do exactly what the variation allows (and no more). If you are saying - Can I get permission for more than one .22 rim fire. This will depend upon your reason / needs and the argument you put forward on your application for variation - but given the right set of circumstances the answer would be yes.
