  1. Speed on the magnet ultra slow "W feathers". Hopefully if the forecast is right it should blow a upe on wednesday, just as the farm decides to plough the stubble.
  2. Unusual? Some ol boys reckon you get one every 50 years? Any thoughts? Nige.
  3. After half an hour looking at things through the bins I set up this morning on barley stubble. There were a few birds about but no consistent flight path. There was breeze, but that's all. Out went the whirlie and 16 deeks I thought I'd get a few shot's, and then the wind completely stopped. I saw nothing for 2 hours, then had a shot at a crow, which stirred a few up. Ended up with 3 woodies and a magpie. Are there any secrets to shooting pigeons when there is no wind? Has anyone done well when it's completely still? Left early for an early evening pint. Cheers, Nige.
  4. I thought all the tips were first class, thanks. I tend to have mine on too much I know.Need to show a bit more restraint and think of the days before magnets were invented.
  5. Recommend the Hull Special Pigeon 32gr 6's especially if you use an auto, they are £104 a 1000 from local dealers around here.
  6. I managed to shoot a few woodies on Tuesday. I've "breasted" the birds and marinated them over night in a salt and sugar solution. They've just gone in the smoker ( a Luhr-Jensen Little Chief) and i'm using 1 pan of alder chips. I thought I'd leave then in for about 2 and a half hours, then finish them off in the oven sprinkled with some bacon bits and honey. Anyone tried smoking pigeon? Any ideas and help would be appreciated. Many thanks.
  7. Hi Guys, I Put about 100 12 bore Hull Cartridge Special Pigeon 32g 6's through my Beretta Teknys auto today, shooting pigeons. I only used these carts and on cleaning the gun the amount of muck inside was amazing, some of it was a little tricky to move as well. I wondered if anyone can advise if there is a particularly "clean" shell out there suited to auto's or are they all the same in this respect? I like the performance of these shells, no problem, there but are there alternatives? Cheers, interested in what you think.
  8. I had a great days shooting today in mid Norfolk, bagged just under 50 shooting in two different places. There was a good wind on which helped, blowing a good force three gusting force 4 easterly. The crops were laid in small areas so a few 'coys in cradles bouncing away and a whirlie to the side of the pattern was enough to entice a few callers. The variety of shots was tremendous, really top quality shooting. I missed a few dipping crossers that came in high from behind me with the wind on the right of the hide (i'm a right-handed shot) through in front passing the decks to my right. I know I was shooting over the top, but nailed one eventually after three goes. They came in to have a look pretty much all day, but were not "under carriage down" most of the time.A lot of birds seemed to be paired and content to **** in the hedgerows and trees. There are lots of birds about and on my way to the shoot the first of the barley is being cut so before long someone will have a big 'un. Cheers all.
  9. I has a Falcon FN19 in .20. Although it was a single shot, i should never of sold it.Everything I pointed it at just rolled over.Brilliant gun. If you can get one on a FAC doing 28ft lb you won't need a lot else out to 60 yards. I'm pretty sure you can still get one and it shouldn't cost a fortune.
  10. For me Leica bins are the best. I've used 8x42BN for years and optically they are top draw. A few mates who have Swaro's have to get the sticky tape out regularly, they just don't seem as well built.
  11. Mid Morning or early afternoon when they're on laid barley this time of year. Sometimes with a really early start you can suprise the odd crow, stoat or weasel.
  12. Amazing 1025 yards, 925 yards etc etc, I wonder how many misses they get
  13. I use a quarter in my Teknys and Imp Cylinder and Cylinder in the AYA s/s. Works well. Don'y use too much choke whatever you do.
  14. I use a Beretta Teknys sporter 12 bore AYA yeoman ss n/e bored out to imp cyl and cyl Webley 4.10 bolt action single barrel Theoben R7 Mk1 .22 Delighted with all of them.
  15. For your information we picked up a Daystate MkII Huntsman in .22 ( personally I would have insisted on a .177) with a 3-9x40 scope for £250 after trading in a BSA meteor. After an afternoon Zero session Mike is delighted with it. It grouped superbly out to 35yards. The gun was in fantastic nick, no marks on the metal work and a few tiny scratches on the wood work. We looked long and hard at the guns mentioned above. Pick of the others was definately the AA S400 but we didn't go there really because of price. The help we got from Chris at: http://www.pellpax.co.uk/ was excellent, nothing was too much trouble. Next weekend we'll do some hunting on our small shoot and see how it goes. Thanks for all your views everyone.
  16. I really appreciate the trouble you have all gone to for such comprehensive responses.I would say the AA is favourite, a lot will depend on his personal favorite. We're off to the gun shop (Youngmans in Yarmouth) on Saturday to have a look.
  17. My nephew (14) has saved up and wants to buy a new airgun. He's been reading airgun world etc and has set his heart on a pre-charged. Multi-shots look a bit expensive so a single shot looks to be the answer. He's got £400 to spend, inc sights and mounts. He will be shooting pests around the farm.Any thoughts or has anyone any good secondhand gear they would like to sell?
  18. I bought one a few years back second hand for 70 quid. It's a great gun but I had the chokes taken out to Imp Cly anf Cylinder as it was far too tight to start with. Never let me down and i'd say it's a perfect knockabout gun.
  19. Caught my first sea trout and shot my first goose as a lad between two "white bridges" on the Norfolk coast.
  20. Happy Apri foolsl, ha ha. My post was about how suitable these shells are for shooting pigeons. We always seem to go off topic on this forum.
  21. Arjimlad, I thought non toxic shot was a requirement over wetlands only? Can't you flight Duck over ol left stubble with lead? Cheers.
  22. At £30 for 250, I think i'll give 'em a try. Should be ideal for the Duck as well.My concern was that I might risk filling birds up with lead. My Teknys sporter is a multi-choke, so i'll open things up to cylinder choke. I'm not too bothered about the extra weight, but this is a good point. Thanks for all your replies to my post.
