  1. Sigh I must be getting old too. I blattered a wheen of them through a 5 shot 32" barreled full choke Semi auto Franchi as a young man. In the gloaming the visual effects were most impressive. Mostly killing cars and sheets o zinc. I really really wanted that slug barrel. Sigh
  2. Angle grinder + plasma disc = job done
  3. Well there was apparently a wee bit o inbreeding a wheen o generations ago in our family so i tought I had better bring a bit of fresh blood into the mix. Der Missis is actually 1/2 Prussian ( Yunkers? breeding ) her mothers family being evicted from the Baltic? coast in the vicinity of Goldapp in 1941 by the Cossacks, two or four hours notice, anyone remaining will be killed. Simples. The china and good linen are still there apparently buried under 70 years growth of Birch wood, as the good farmland reverted.
  4. I bes a sucker for quality German stuff( like the Missis) so oh yes I could well buy a S&B, Zeiss or Swaro. I just picked up on a comment by Nickberdo who says 4-16 mag by 50mm and mostly works on 12 mag ( for the .17HMR) I should add that I am still using the "Optimate" or "Optima"? 3-9 by 45 I purchased some 33 years ago. I suspect technology has moved on a bit. Unlike moi.
  5. Hi sur, wud that be anywhere near Ballymoney like?, the range that is? cheers M
  6. I think i want a second focal plane scope, for a .17HMR at ranges not exceeding 150m,(very very hopefully)& mostly 75 to 100m realistically, I have tried my big Hakko (10 to 40 mag) and max 10/12 mag appear to be ample for my needs. I set an egg up at 100m to see what I could see, you see. (cos I could not find a golf ball.) cheers M Ohhhhhhhh Thanks for the tip seeker, tried Macleod's, there, dribble & drool & come over all undecided again.Spoilt for choice.
  7. Might i add that i bought a Sako Quad simply because in the Gun shop it felt the best engineered i.e. magazine release etc, it also appeared to be quite well finished. Despite owning it for some time I had NOT adjusted the trigger. I have just done so, nice and light, simply turned the screw out to I felt Anschutz trigger happy. But QUESTION??? how light is still safe?? I do not touch the trigger until ready to shoot so the lightness should not be an issue. But is the mechanism "safe" if a tad light, i.e if dropped or knocked? i would not intend to drop her...but just in case? cheers M PS my only regret was not waiting the extra 6 months for the Hunter barrel profile, I got "varmint" ie true cylinder therefore heavy to the muzzle. sigh
  8. So there I was just about to plump & order a Zeiss 2-8 by 42 Duralty, but I still hankered for the S & B 3-12 by 42 ( but it was a bit heavy) When bloody hell what do I see..........but the new USA model (sigh) S & B Summit.2.5-10 by 40 ****** its perfect? for moi But will it be available to the Uk market
  9. Sniff! That was "O" level maths btw ( back when i were a lad) Steyr Daimler Puch, Automatic 2.9 turbo diesel Van ( its a "G"Wagen) 24.?? tank in tank out, brimmed & rebrimmed over a few thousand miles, and all logged & calculated regardless of driving style or type, ie local tootling , flogging down the Motorway with a trailer etc etc Made NO difference All 24.?? mpg, never 23. or 25. Ps Re the trip computer thinngy our other car has one , when new about 3%optimistic, now about 5% ( at 218,000 miles) Cross referenced against Odometer milage checked against Motorway marker posts, tank brimmed & rebrimmed over a few thou miles, so its only "variable" is the the quantity dispensed at the pump , and statistically this is probably fractionally low against the readout, commerce being what it is.
  10. Worth a punt? Any better than other reputable brands at the same price? Anyone had a gleek thro one? Cheers M
  11. Cordless drill...a ball bearing welded to a steel rod, & grinding paste worked for me with a .22 target rifle A single hole group, just barely exceeding .22 from 5 rds at 15m, fired from prone unsupported. My best ever group i would add.
  12. Scheesh Bloody obvious innit LR=Land Rover
  13. Scheesh What age are yous guys I'm over 50 and I work in METRES, ye ken the SI system like whats with these yards?
  14. Was the OX an olde English measure for shot?
  15. I have plinked with an air rifle a .22Lr (lever action) A full choked auto 5 shot shot gun And Hey a 7.62mm SLR forby ( tween the legs, over the head, behind the back & mostly downrange) (It was at the time of the American involvment in El Salavador?, there is a connection honest) Oy its fun
  16. As in on Saturday I actually took her out and fired a wheen o rounds through her. at a measured 44m ( I had stepped it as 50) First the .22 barrel, zeroed in Scope off c/w mounts, removed .22 barrel, fitted the .17HMR and refitted the scope Printing about 75mm high, but spot on with the windage ( and a 1/2 turn on the scope sorted the elevation) removed scope and refitted .22 barrel, refitted the scope & dialled the 1/2 turn back in for elevation. Bang on back to the same zero as before ( well within a thumbnail sized group, and my position was not that steady) Removed scope & .22 barrel & refitted the .17HMR & scope Dialled in the required 1/2 turn correction on the scope And "dead on" again. LIKE WOW, that is quite some engineering Happenstance the .22 barrel was unmoderated and the .17HMR had the moderater fitted. As someone pointed out it should be possible to remove & refit a scope on the 11mm dovetail without loss of zero. For that matter all those years I was shooting .22 target rifle that is exactly what we did with the diopter? peep sights
  17. And I'm still waiting for the lady on the left to "ping out" there Elvis. However that aside I spent some time on tinternet last night reading a USA site with scope reviews. Fasciniting stuff incl the relationship between Kahles & Swaro,( and I KNEW Swaro did NOT make scopes, when I were a lad) where the different scope brands are made. Who makes scopes for whom etc etc, etc etc Like the "launch in Japan/Japan manufactured" build a reputation and quitetly outsource production to the Phillipines or whereever. ie Brand "x" might have been excellent quality three years ago, now its merely medicore. Scheesh Ma heid is whirling ( prob from watching Rab C. last night)
  18. Thanks al4x, for the reassurance I'll talk myself into it yet might go to that show first though might miss a bargain cheers M
  19. Yes I was aware the Conquest was a US only model of Zeiss. I actually had a comment ( on my origional post) to the effect that there would not be much point contacting Zeiss with the Ser No as they would perhaps not unreasonably ignore me But it was a bit longwinded I have never done business on ebay before, but have heard the horror stories. It would be from sportingsuppliesuk, who have an ebay shop and yes I would pay with a credit card ( the lack of copied/cloned Zeiss is a comfort at least) ************ If my back was stronger I might consider a 2nd hand IOR On the other hand I could go to that show in Newark at the end of Feb, and try hands on/haggle face to face ************** gibber/twitch/drool etc
  20. Like a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14*50 I would like to think I could spot a cheap copy However I might have more difficulty with a good copy And have absolutly No previous exp with Zeiss stuff Signed I used to be undecided, now i'm
  21. If I recall correctly it was the absolutly full "sight picture" which seemed to fill the entire eyebell. Instantly. With the S&B.................Which I DO NOT NEED With most / all of the other scopes I had to shuggle my head around to percisely line up my eye to get a clear view. Though as most of them were not mounted to a dummy rifle, it was perhaps an unfair comparison ( And Baldrick take it easy I did NOT try a Zeiss, so I am not besmircking their optics ) This was all inside a well lit gun room at about 15 m, it may have been different outside in natural light, but I was double locked in. The S&B was sittin in a rack of Nikkor Stirlings, I thought it was therefore a Nikkor when I lifted it, and thought WOW when i looked through. Sigh........... that would have been quite a bargain.
  22. Thanks Nick, i was aware of the Leupold version , it was simply that the RFD, I was dealing with ( who does a good selection of scopes ) was looking to sell me the Apel version. Cheers M PS I should NOT have looked through that S&B scope. muuust desist.
  23. Since I cannot get clearance below the obj bell to swop barrells on the Sako Quad, without either (i) mounting the scope very high OR (ii) removing it. As a solution I have been told Apel pivot? (is that the term) QD? mounts will work. At the £200.00 odd I bin quoted they would bloody need to. Any thoughts? cheers M
  24. I shot .22 target rifle years, mostly indoordoor but outdoor as well, & ago we had some UK competitive shots within the club. I not never recall ANYONE EVER cleaning a .22LR. That situation may have changed but I am still friendly with guys who shoot .22 competively & they dont clean either. cheers M
