  1. I can recommend one of these, removes the thatch and moss Wolf thatch and moss removal rake . Using one is pretty physical - aiming for a cross-hatch effect. 1st pass and then again at 90 degrees on the same patch of lawn. You'll remove all the dead grass and moss leaving just the good healthy grass behind, weed n feed whats left.
  2. The Windows defender program isn't good enough to properly protect you, - consider using a commercial grade tool like Eset NOD32 antivirus.
  3. I'd have no idea what sums of money would be required to charter a private jet - I struggle to understand the fares charged by ULCCs when the asset costs north of £30m!
  4. The Amazon Music Unlimited library is, allegedly, even larger than Spotify and that's £7.99 a month - I have no complaints as it is a great service. YouTube content - there is a tool called VideoProc (available for Windows and MacOS) costs around £30 that enables you to download Youtube content locally in a variety of formats. - great for the phone/tablet if you are travelling too.
  5. Working from home is the answer. I've done it for the last 20 years. it's not all good though - there are times when some especially dull task needs attention when things like emptying the dishwasher are massively more attractive. The concept of 9-5 disappears because work is always present (I work in IT Pre-sales), always stuff that has to be done with the upside that I can often work late into the night but then take a few hours off in the day to go shooting....therapy. Downsides - if you are a 'people person' then it can be really lonely as all interaction with colleagues is virtual plus you need personal discipline to both not over-work or skive off too much....
  6. Is it just me? Has this been hyped out of sight? Every year Flu kills people, more often the elderly or those who have compromised immune systems - does it make headline news? No. So now we have another virus - yes it's contagious like the others and it might kill you. So what's new or different?
  7. At least if he's bothering the HS2 crowd he isn't bothering us lot....

    Retirement

    Thanks Dave, appreciated.
  9. It's worrying - clusters of cases appearing with no obvious links to other infected areas. I read recently that there is a conjecture that it's actually an escaped bio-weapon.

    Retirement

I'm fast approaching my 63rd birthday and have been pondering this retirement idea - I'll be honest and say it worries me a bit. I'll shoot a couple of days a week, get on top of the DIY and then what? I've stored up a couple of Pocher car kits...was a dream when I was 16 and bought them 20 years ago so that's something else. In the last 30+ years of my working life I have travelled a lot and whilst there is a handful of places I'd still like to visit truthfully if I never saw the inside of another plane I wouldn't exactly be broken hearted. I reflected on stuff that I'd never got to do/the opportunity wasn't there kind of thing and one of the activities where the box never got ticked was using the lathe/mill etc in school metalwork lessons... Have done a bit of research and found this course: https://www.axminster.co.uk/skill-centre/engineering-courses/small-engineering-lathe-introduction-course 2 days, figured that I might enjoy it and if not then it's another skill acquired..... This retirement idea is going to require effort - I'm sure not going to wait around to die.
  11. Wireless if you can afford it - or for ultimate reliability (and security) put Ethernet cable in - CAT6. All the Wireless approaches fall into the same 'nearly' bucket - i.e. they nearly work all of the time. It is the fashion these days to connect one's Smart TV wirelessly - it's more hassle to use Ethernet cable but worth the effort and low cost for a better overall result. I have a pair of cables that leave the BT router in my study, go through the wall and then up the side of the house, into the roof-space and across to the other side of the house, down an outside wall again and into the sitting room so the TV and home theatre PC have a quick, 100% reliable connection.
  12. Thanks for sharing Ditchman, your daughter is a properly decent lady.
  13. Curious coincidence - I was in the local gun shop on Tuesday of this week and there was a guy in front of me trying to trade one in. It's most likely just a case of the novelty wearing off something that doesn't match the very traditional tastes of the shooting community i.e. there are few second hand Benelli 828U Sports appearing on the used market for the same reason.
  14. I was in Boston MA (the most UK like of all the US cities I've visited) a few years back when it was unseasonably cold at -25c (sea had frozen), it would snow overnight and yet by 8am in the morning the pavements would be clear and life carried on completely normally. Conversely, I'm just packing my bags for a trip to Houston TX, the last time I was there, a couple of years back the temp dipped to -5c for a few days and that really messed things up..they insulate to keep the heat out in Texas so everything unprotected froze...no gritters for the roads...made the UK look quite good at it...
  15. I would have gone for the "we have had your oil, bye!" approach myself...
  16. You can try something tactful like 'you are so lucky to be maturing gracefully darling - one or two blonde hairs are changing'...….
  17. They take pride in the fact that many of targets are at the far side of tricky - personally I like it a lot. By appointment they also have general game and partridge layouts to try - properly challenging.
  18. I firmly believe that we should have multiple hobbies and interests as our brains are powerful tools that need regular exercise - ultimately it comes down to a question of priorities. The nature of this forum means most of us have practical 'get-out-there-and-do-something' inclinations whereas it kind of feels that much of the population are sat on their tails in front of the TV. Keep it up lads.😁
  19. Sorry to hear that Fatchap, that's terrible and a crappy start to 2020. Wishing you a speedy recovery. When many of us more 'mature' lads were youngsters there were places where these loonies with personality disorders where kept - asylums. They have been closed, demolished and houses built on the land and now the nutcases are in the community with a vague hope that they are taking their medication.
  20. Car insurance is a weird thing - defies logic. Adding drivers to your policy brings the cost down - the perverse principle being that it spreads the risk. My wife is on my Audi policy - she'll never drive it (a Q3 is viewed as too big).
  21. My brother, who lives in the US, worked for a company that designed and build smart meters before being acquired by Elster who then fell to Honeywell. He tells me that the utility companies know full well that the consumer monitoring gizmos have a novelty value that lasts for minutes. In the US there was legislation passed that set a deadline whereby consumers would have a legal right to be billed by the minute with the ability to contact a utility provider and terminate/change contract with instantaneous effect - 'always online' smart meters with either internet or cellular data connections provided that capability. Both our electric and gas meters are 'smart'...truly fit and forget.
  22. I'm with Yellow Bear - there was a time when the Labour Party stood for a set of values that people could relate to, now lost. Sometimes an organisation is so fundamentally screwed up that no one wants to admit that the personalities involved are no longer suitable for leadership - that's the Labour party.
  23. I signed up for the retinal eye scan idea they had - was supposed to speed up passing through immigration with special gates...only it didn't work reliably (I never got it to work) and they gave up....it's good to know that my 40% tax contribution is being spent wisely...🥵
