Clay & game also sell t shot (5mm) in steel I regularly use it in my Xtrema with a briley I/m choke
-
Very very good patterns for 60 yrd And anyone who says steel isn't effective beyond 40 yrd is either a terrible shot or is using **** shells .I use steel all the time and don't use lead for wildfowl inland even though by law I can ,but if you want to restrict your shots to 40 yrd Max then that's upto you but don't preach to others who consistently use it (and get clean kills ) a bit further

Wear a cartridge belt but keep it under your jacket to keep the shells clean and dry and give them a wipe over with an oily rag when you get home

Steel/Lead cartridges comparison.

Didn't mean they opened up pattern , I ment low shot count as to get the speed up you have to lower shot weight -
Steel/Lead cartridges comparison.
allanm replied to Cranfield's topic in Bullets, Cartridges and Reloading
Totally agree about the fast loads around 1500 is fine, and with bigger pellets speed is less important .I loaded some 1750 ft/sec loads and they kicked like a donkey , wasted a lot of powder ,had low shot count and was like a flame thrower in the dark lol -
All 3 of them patterns look good at that range ,I've never used that type of shot ,what would the no2 be like for distance compared to steel in a larger shot size ?

lydale express 24g steel 7's ???
allanm replied to craigie_10's topic in Bullets, Cartridges and Reloading
Yes full choke its only shot size no7 ! This has been done to death ,if your not happy doing it then don't but steel no7 will be poor at anything but close range with open chokes -
recommend a decent 3.5inch steel cartridge
allanm replied to littlerob's topic in Bullets, Cartridges and Reloading
Everyone to there own but I personally wouldn't go back to factory shells for geese ,I actually enjoy reloading them and then dropping a few birds with your own shells is pretty satisfying -

By a cheap Lee load all ,gaep finishing head and some cheap digi scales and you'll load a better cartridge than anything you can buy .only problem at moment if you haven't got any is powder is getting harder to get -
lydale express 24g steel 7's ???
allanm replied to craigie_10's topic in Bullets, Cartridges and Reloading
I've used a fair fee of them and like been said there fine for sensible ranges or you get a lot of runners .to make them work to there Max use as tight a choke as possible ,preferably full -
Its not worth spending a fortune to possibly find out wildfowling isn't for you , The gun you have will be fine ,gamebore mammoth in no1 or bb shot steel would be good to start with for geese and a no3 for ducks .I wouldn't bother with any calls and a cheap jacket and waders of flea bay and you be set . But remember the foreshore can be a dangerous place so a tide book etc is also a neccesity Good luck
