    Living abroad

Interesting point so I looked on .gov.uk/ state pension if you retire abroad. As ever, nothing is easy. There are countries where payment increases will take place and others where it will not. Choose carefully I suppose is the answer.
  2. Last Saturday Mrs B and I went to a popular Indian restaurant for a nice evening out together. Order taken and drinks and poppadoms on the table by 7.45 pm. Fast approaching 8.30pm no sign of our food. Throughout this time there was a continuous stream of takeaway delivery riders etc and people collecting carrier bags of food. The delay was spoiling our quiet evening out together. Delivery drivers etc were being served but we were not. I went up to the manager and very politely asked him when would we get our meal. “As you can see sir, we are very busy” at the same time he handed takeaways to two drivers. I said that 45 minutes was an unacceptable delay and asked if he felt that those who chose to visit his restaurant for a special evening out should be treated preferentially to takeaway orders. I got the stone wall “we are trying our best sir”. So I told him it was an unacceptable delay. That he had 10 mins to get my food on the table or we would leave and he could pay for the drinks and poppadoms as compensation. Surprise surprise our food was delivered, which only shows that they can prioritise orders should the choose to do so. When I asked for the bill I said do not add any service charge, as the service was dreadful, and take off 10% as compensation. He did both. Question. Should restaurant diners have priority over takeaway? Views welcomed.
  3. Many years back I did the drawings for a large but single door garage to the rear of our property. It went through OK and I’m sure it was because I borrowed a set of drawings from a neighbour who had done something similar and I was able to incorporate all the features / descriptions the planners would look for. If your neighbours have done similar then see if you can borrow their drawings to guide you. Good Luck.
  4. And your evidence to support this statement is?

    real or scam?

No idea sorry. If you don’t recognise the sender then perhaps forward the email to the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC details on line) and seek their views. They are interested in new scams (if this is one ) and taking them down.
  6. If your mate manages to find a SGC holder willing to store his shotgun for him remind him not to overlook the 72 hour rule
  7. As someone who has friends of over 50 yrs standing from Kildare to Kilrush there was no “English only” in my comments. This topic is about US Presidents and my post was a Cynical comment about the vote catching strategy of the current president who hopes to stand again. No further comment.
  8. And, was his supposed gaffe in confusing the All Blacks with the Black a Tans not an error at all but a deliberate reminder of history so as to emphasise his vote catching anti British pro Irish heritage.
  9. Thanks for the recommendations. I will look at each.
  10. Sound advice indeed. I’ve tried this type of approach without improvement and wonder whether it’s all in my head (as they say). To explain. About 9 yrs ago (aged 70) a friend asked if I’d like to get a shotgun and help with his crop protection. I’ve loved it ever since. By and large Pigeons can come from any direction, flying low across the field or from height, folding their wings and dropping like a stone. The variations are almost endless. I can sit there, suddenly there can be a grey blur, up, bang, yes. I am happy with my success rate. With the absence of pigeons lately north of Bristol (where are they?) a few buddies have persuaded me to have a go at clays. Reliably tracking a clay is my problem too. Unlike pigeons in the field the clay comes from the same place, at the same speed, on the same trajectory. Can I pick it up, track it and nail it with the same satisfactory success rate as in the field ? NO! So, I’ve now reconciled myself to enjoying a good morning with friends irrespective of my score. Which, at nearly 80 yrs is what it’s all about.
  11. Recommendations based on experience please on video door bell which comes with its’ own chime, where you can retrieve video clips from its’ own base unit inside the property (so not on any iCloud requiring subscriptions) and is idiot proof to install. Thank you. (I have searched the forum but can’t find an answer)

    dentures

In 1973? (74?) I had complete removal and immediate dentures. This, apparently, was the quickest way forward to return to normality which also avoided the embarrassment of being “gummy” when at work. As to diet? Long term memory loss I’m afraid but I believe it involved soups and mashed fruits for deserts.
  13. repackages information ?? !! With absolutely no cross checks as to integrity and accuracy. So how reliable is that? By their own admission: "When people use ChatGPT, they are shown a disclaimer warning that the content it generates may contain "inaccurate information about people, places, or facts". And on its public blog about the tool, OpenAI says a limitation is that it "sometimes writes plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical answers". You say....."In the case of obscure subjects such as the one you cited". There is nothing obscure about international news items. I'm with Scully on this one
  14. Given that Johnston Carmichael have been the SNP Auditors for many years; that the £600(k) issue has been rumbling on for some time; that prior years accounts seemed not to show the existence of the “ring fenced independence fund”; and, the responsibilities of Auditors as set down by the Financial Reporting Council, it to some may beg the questions of why it has taken the Auditors up until now to leave their client and, were they were aware of the problem and if not then why not?
  15. chatGPT !! All that glistens is not gold. The mayor of Hepburn Shire County Australia is considering legal action defamation case because the OpenAI tool falsely claimed he was imprisoned for Bribery.
  16. My favourite bottle opener !! 😂
  17. We went there last year. Based ourselves in central Funchal. Plenty to do and see. The cable car to monte Palace tropical gardens was fun and the gardens interesting. To give you a bit of help in advance planning you could do no worse than get the “Lonely Planet Pocket Madeira” (Amazon). It suited our needs.
  18. Many thank. Sadly, the £££ is a bit beyond my pension
  19. Jail25 Most interesting. Food for thought. What is the thermal imager? Many thanks Bob
  20. I would appreciate details of this arrangement please. Thanks.
  21. Lloyd perhaps you should return your Rose tinted spectacles on sweeping generalisations to spec savers I’m 1943 born. Yes, we bought our own house, but getting the deposit was far from “too much bother” and at one stage we suffered mortgage interest rates as high as 17% on a repayment mortgage. I earned a reasonable salary but my wife could not “stay at home and raise the kids” We still had to balance the budget with the care of two children. When I returned from work my wife would do the housewives evening shift at the local factory and when that closed then evening shifts at the local hospital. We were not alone. So many of our friends and neighbours worked in this way: and we couldn’t afford a car until I was 32 - a beaten up Austin A40. Your suggestion that we never had it so good is absolute oarlocks. You certainly couldn’t post your comments in the South Wales Argus for fear of being lynched 😂😂😂
  22. Agreed. We have a local butcher who sells gammon hocks. Great for ham and pea soup.
  23. Where I once worked we had similar wording on our invoices. We once sold a piece of kit to a new would be agent who then sold it on in the course of business. We were not paid. I discussed with lawyers, available through the Federation of Small businesses, the opportunity of recovering our kit from the end user. The then advice was that the end user would be regarded as a Bona Fide Purchaser or purchaser in innocence and the kit would remain theirs despite competing claims of ownership. So, recovery action would have to be against the first purchaser / person. In our case, as seems to be the case here, that person was a “Man of straw” and not worth suing. We couldn’t action the tort of conversion (selling assets not his own and retaining the proceeds) as I recall that is a civil not a criminal act. Whether any criminal act has occurred is a matter for the OP to discuss with the police. Even if it has then police action, if any, seems unlikely to bring in any cash if the seller remains a man of straw. Messy business. Fingers crossed for the OP.
