  1. The two large rape feilds I was waiting to shoot were ploughed the day after they were cut, absolutely gutted!!!
  2. I have to agree with you there, the reason I have not shot it for so long is because I aquired permission on 3800 acres on my door step last year and just got lazy, but that has now changed !!!!!
  3. Hello all, I spoke to one of the farms I have permission on a couple of days ago, to see if anything was happening as I have not shot on it since last year, I was told they had just cut the barley on a field that has a concrete flight line right through it, and that there were loads of pigeons on it. So yesterday I gave it a go. When I arrived on the field true to the farmers word the field had at least 200 birds on it with more flighting in, the only problem was they had changed the lock to the gate . So I loaded up the gear on my back like a donkey and off I set across the field to the place most were landing and the only safe place to shoot from as a busy road ran along two borders of the field although protected by a thick hedge and trees with a pylon crossing a third of the way down across the field . When I got two my desired location the wind was unfortunately blowing into my face not ideal , so I set up the decoys in a long curve inside the curve facing the hide as soon as i set up in they came but really fast and over my head, which made some really difficult shooting, and i missed a fare few so I changed the pattern so the decoys were still facing the wind but in a line to my left, this time when they came in they circled round they decoys swooping in to the pattern directly in front of me, perfect !!. I started off with just 12 flocked shell decoys with one of those terminator bouncers pointing to the pattern then when the first bird was down I put that one a flapper in the middle of the pattern followed by two landing craddles pointing in to the pattern. All the other birds that were shot were added to the pattern. The birds came constantly in ones, twos all they way up to flocks of tweenty that was tricky, in the point of which ones to shoot at first, I can honestly say it was the best shooting I have ever had . I ended up with 166 I set up at 3 and had to stop at 7.30 because of how long it was going to take me to tidy up and get back to the truck with the gear and birds , I thought I would give my shooting buddy stuart (gottsy boy) a ring to tell him about the afternoon I had just had and lucky for me he said he would pop down to give me a hand and bring the dog , he turned up about 15mins later the birds were still coming in while I was clearing up so in my estimation if I had continued shooting I could have easily shot at another 50 odd gutted , but with me and stu and little maisey (the dog) it took su til 9.15 to get done . And I must congratulate stu on traing maisey as she is only 11 months old and did a blinding job picking up the birds from the wood behind the hide . My record til yesterday was 61, so I am over the moon with 166. I didn't have a camera but stu took a picture on his phone and will upload in the next day or two . We are going to the say field tomorrow so fingers crossed I'll beat that !!!!
  4. Hello All, A mate of mine was shooting over on the wheat fields this afternoon, heard the gun shots so gave him a bell to see how he was doing, he said he had never seen so many pigeons . So loaded up the gear and took a drive over, and sure enough he was right they where everywhere again, had a quick chat with him sorted out the best place for me to set up to keep the birds moving decided on the opposite field in the far corner where the pigeons followed a tree line . I took Highlanders advice and just used 5 shell decoys a bouncer, a lander and a flapper. The shells were'nt put in any kind of pattern just dotted about leaving a large landing area with the flapper at the front of the opening the lander to left of that and the bouncer pointing to the layout about 60 yards back. As soon as I had set up they started to come in either into the layout to land or fly over it to have a look, a fare few took no notice of the layout at at all . I started at 4.30 and finished at 8.00 with 61 in total for 108 carts not bad I think I'll be out again friday to give them another go.
  5. I'm going to take cranfields advice and paint the magnet in matt green and brown, because thinking back the last few times I had used the magnet the weather had been bright so the birds flaring away was most probably because of the shining arms . I'm going to give those fields another go hopefully tomorrow afternoon as I had a drive over to them today and they are still there in huge numbers this time I'm going to flag the field near the cattle and house , that should hopefully send them my direction as the flight lines have not changed at all, still coming from every where but mostly via the hedgerow. Today would have been perfect good breeze blowing and and mostly overcast , but the landowner does not permit shooting on a Sunday typical !!
  6. I had not been out for nearly two weeks so was keen to make the most of it, don't get me wrong there was a hell of a lot of swearing going on, the magnet nearly got chucked out a few times so frustrated is a mild word for it, I suppose the heat didn't help as it was 29 !!
  7. I went to have a look round a part of my permission I rarely go to for what reason I don't know this was 4pm. There is 2 fields of beans followed by another 5 of wheat the largest is about 70 acres the smallest of about 15 . Obviously nothing at the beans but when I came to the first field of wheat, my god there must have been 300 pigeons feeding on the standing crop these quickly flew off in the direction of one of the smaller fields so I drove up to it when I got there I can honestly say I have never seen so many pigeons in one place , as I pulled up birds lifted off that field enmass the air was thick with them if I had gun in hand the one shot could have brought down about ten of them . I sat and watched in amazement as they just continued to buzz round this field after about 5 mins birds were still lifting off the standing crop , now the big problem with this field is it is only 100 yards wide with a field full of cattle behind it then over to the right is where the land owners daughter lives and can't take the chance of lead landing on her car or roof so I decided to carry on driving to the other wheat fields behind a wood to the right of this field as I drive round I believe my eyes but this field is just about the same. I sat and watched the field to suss out the flight lines but the pigeons were coming from every direction, which made this extremely difficult after about 40 mins I decided that the largest amount of birds where entering the field via a hedgerow to the far right along the tree line then crossing the field to a patch of standing wheat beneath a oak tree so I gave it a go drove round to the oak tree set up the hide the set the decoys where the birds had been landing this patch was 30 yds in the damage was unbelieveable they had flattened a huge area nearly down to the ground. The wind was behind me which was ideal but was hot and bright not so ideal . set up 2 dead bird bouncers about 60 yds out pointing in to the killing area the shell decoys laid on the wheat in a u shape with a flapper in the middle, the first couple of pigeons came in for a look but flared off this happen another few times so I went back and changed the pattern to two groups of six shells with the flapper in the middle this worked a lot better the first two were down missed a couple I got to six then the pigeons didn't take much notice just carried along the tree line so out came the magnet put to the left of the pattern one came in, down he went then, they started to flare off again so moved it over to the right and took off the hypa flaps and put on dead birds another one came in down again missed a string of shots then they followed along the tree line again ignoring the pattern . So moved the magnet again this time over to the field behind me this brought in another couple, then started flaring off again, so took a walk out to the field and look back the arms of the magnet were glinting like flashing mirror in the bright sun but as soon as a cloud passed these were few and far between it didn't so in came the rotary , didn't flare but didn't take notice just seemed to avoid .played around again with the layout and managed to bag a another couple bringing the total to 12 and after seeing all those pigeons i was expecting a red letter day but just could not bring them in probably saw the next field was teeming with them and decided to go there , how annoying if i have flagged it maybe that might have changed things !!
  8. I use one as well as a flapper find they work well as they add a bit more movement, I take these out rather than the magnet as of late the magnet acts as a detterent . The only down side to them is you can only use them on short crops and stubbles.
  9. Finally I have done my home made flocked decoys and I think they look pretty damn good, I used the kit I bought then ordered some more flock from that place off fleabay as recommended by activeii, the grey in the kit was a bit dark, so bought some lighter coloured grey and sprayed that on the top and has really finished them off, giving them a go tomorrow after work on some laid wheat pigeons beware !!! . I would put some pictures on of them but i find this impossible .
  10. PM sent can you send me some pics please . thanks Kaiser
  11. I agree, I went to zambia a couple of years ago, and my tiger fishing guide used to be a hunting guide but gave it up do to how he couldn't take any more killing by rich americans, these guys came over with a list of what they wanted to kill from a giraffe, hippo, crocodile , lion elephant ,from a boat ,helicopter on foot. The reason he finally gave up was because he took out this american, a beautiful bull elephant came for a drink from the river this guy wanted to kill it but unknown to the guide, he had hardly ever shot a rifle let alone the cal needed to take down an animal of this side, first shot hit the rear of the elephant wounding it the second midrift , the guide had to then track the animal to put it out of its misery, all this ****** said was how he was going to tell his mates how he shot an elephant in his case wound it!! I asked out of interest how much that cost the fee for that was $50,000 he had spent nearly $250,000 on his two week holiday . They should not allow this any more as it is hardly sporting, what they should allow is for these tossers to hunt the ivory poachers who like them kill animals in their hundreds . I'm no anti but once you have been and seen these amazing animals which are now in major decline you would agree. Kaiser
  12. I ve had the same problem with a magnet so much so I now just use the flapper and pecking cradle, leave the magnet at hoe but oe harvest tie I'll bring it out again .
  13. This is the strange thing, although these flight lines are used throughout the day,if I shoot from the morning to the afternoon they dry up,but if I go shooting on a late afternoon say between 5pm and 8pm they stay busy,I just cannot figure it out.
  14. I've been watching the fields around my permission for ages now, the usual l flight lines i see which are used constantly whilst I'm looking round, when I take the gun and gear with me they are still in use but when i have the first couple of shots these flight lines stop completely and I mean nothing around for miles, this happened today . I moved 4 times after giving each place a couple of hours, every place I went this happened, has anybody else had this ? Or am I doing something wrong ? and before anyone says the obvious the hide was perfect there was a good breeze, decoys set out well, just nothing in the air . By the way grand total for the day a massive 2 and my mate nothing this after starting 8am and finishing at 4pm !!! Thanks kaiser
  15. I use a bucket with one of those swivel lids, a great bit of kit. The fold down stools I found to be a chore as getting a level bit of ground in the hide never happens!!
