  1. Let him crack on then and try everything else first, as with anything there is a knack to it, cockers are renowned for not wanting to give up retrieves, how many cockers have you trained/owned Kent? As the dog comes in with delivery, go as normal to take the retrieve, once your hands are on the game give the release command, at the same time apply pressure on the dogs paw with your foot, I don't mean stamp on it just a gentle amount and the dog will immediately release game after 2-3 goes of this the dog will release on the command without the pressure on its paw.
  2. doesn't sound like hard mouth, more unwilling to give up the retrieve, a common cocker trait, when he comes in with the delivery, stand on his foot, he will soon drop the bird then, after a few times doing this he should get the message.
  3. Yes, got it off Ian Openshaw at Rytex at 8 weeks old, had a few off him now, really like his stuff, this ones coming along nicely. Cracking pic Tim!
  4. Where from?? they seem to be 5-6k in the advertisements up in Scotland, i understand it may be cheaper further south, but 2.5k sounds very cheap!
  5. Had a decent day on Friday, re-joined SACS after a few years absence, and being almost frog marched by a keeper to the tent and picked up a 2nd in the spaniel test, weather was very good which always helps!
  6. Look on the KC puppy finder site, there are lots of litters there in Scotland, some docked and chipped.
  7. Small maily black flys, like caithness almost all lochs hold trout but dont expect any monsters
  8. No Davvy Lisset has pepper, had thought of using him, as he's very closely related (but not too close) to my bitch, but the pups would likely be all black and white, I'd preffer a mixture of liver and black, probably use beggarbush boris or dawsonlee chance.
  9. Cheers mate, got one more trial to run her in this year then I'll be lining her to keep a pup back for myself, will likely use Ian openshaws stud.
  10. My 2 year old FTAW Molly, out picking up on a driven shoot today.
  11. I trial and work my dogs at shoots, as long as you're consistent with the dog, I don't see a problem with it.
  12. His sister admitted he was into dog fighting, not the lab story, I'm sorry but I'm saddened by your lack of compassion whether the guy was into dog fighting or not, I wouldn't wish him to be in the state he's in...
  13. if youre after quality spaniels look no further than Ian openshaw at rytex kennels, hes on his 97th FTCH now i beleive, the record speaks for itself He often exports fully trained dogs to America if that is what you were after
  14. The lab story came from stan the "corner man" Stan, if you watched the documentary i wouldnt beleive a word the guy said..... Dog fighting though was rife in America at that time, different countrys different cultures.....
  15. a very good documentry, there is also a book about the fight "war baby" its a very, very good read, tells you a lot more about the fight and the fighters and those around thems lives  It was a real shame the preparation the G-man had in the run upto the fight, let down by trainers and those whoe were supposed to be looking after his interests, expcept all they were interested in was their own pockets, some of the stuff is crazy, for a world title fight, Gerlad wrapped his own hands  the has been described as "if hands are wrapped correctly you can punch through walls, if done wronlgy, youd have candy floss for fists" perhaps why the G-man who had stopped 90% of his previous oppositon in under 2 rounds, couldnt drop Benn for a 10 count? Well forgetting the first round where he should have been counted out in the first Many suspect the G-man sufferd damage before this fight, and this fight only exposed what was already there? Sad stuff regardless, Benn was never really the same after it and the G-man is pennyless and forgotten in boxing circles by most, as most fighters dont want reminded as to what can happen.......... as marnold states, i too found it a sad watch..........
  16. Work on the things the dog isn't good at, not the things it is...
  17. at 10 months old, she is IMO a little young to be expected to be steady to game anyway, is there any trainers nearby who have a rabbit pen you could use, this way you could control the situation and pre empt a flush and get out there after her when she does chase and bring her back to the point of flush and give her a few sharp blasts of the stop whistle, a few goes at this within a short period should go along way to her understanding what you are asking of her?
  18. Sadly 90% of owners won't consider "pure gundog qualitys" they are looking at what is easiest to keep etc
  19. Quite simply beacuse they are different (fox red labs) people will pay a premium due to this fact, as far as cockers go, market demands, more people want one as they are smaller, less to feed and clean up and dare i say it cuter (lots of females owning cockers for beating and picking up) i own both cockers and springers, the springers are as a rule easier to train, but as far as work goes if anything the springer would have the edge on the cocker...
  20. Yup each to their own, but id be using the sire, and i wouldnt be letting price sway my judgement, unless your breeding for finainacial gain.......
  21. He's cheaper for a reason he aint a FTCH like his sire
  22. Also worth remembering trial dogs are just very polished shooting dogs, one could happily do both, the other unlikely...trial dogs make fantastic shooting dogs!
