  1. £150.00 No Offers. GDK Gun Safe with Bolt Locking and internal ammunition compartment. Like new and only selling as have now got one which takes 8 guns. All keys present. These are £209.99 New and mine is as good as sixty quid cheaper.
  2. can we not use the following: Wild birds: licence to kill, take or disturb to prevent disease or agricultural damage, for conservation, or public health and safety (A08 and LR08)

  4. Well it seems to have done the trick okay and ended up with 10 out of 10 in the Bull at 50m. I will re-check the bipod and do the barrel to stock paper test with it fitted. Found that the more rounds I fired the better the gun shot so maybe the barrel needed some rounds through it? Only ever fired well used weapons in the military and never brand new ones so never experienced this before. Thanks everyone for your advice. ATB John
  5. Hi Guys and thanks for the tips. Yes I did check all the obvious like stock screws and scope mounts and they were solid. No sign of bullet strike on the S/Mod but imagine I would have to try shooting without it to see any difference. My Bipod is not a super duper Harris but why would that make so much difference ?I appreciate you all bothering to reply ATB John
  6. Have my first .17 Hmr a CZ452 American with 16" barrel. Adenbourne Field Sports in Witney are closing down so I got a good deal and great service as I have come to expect from Bruce and Craig. Bruce fitted the Rimfire magic trigger kit which is excellent and only charged me for the parts. I have a SAK Sound Moderator and a 6 - 24 x 50 Nikko Sterling IR scope with Px Adj and also have a bipod. Initial zeroing started well at a measured 50m on the bipod and got on target and put two rounds in the centre. However then the the next three shots (all touching) went high ? Anyway I struggled to group which surprised me so cleaned the barrel with a boresnake and thought I would try my luck at about 90m. The spread was bad and again seemed to climb up the target. Anyway I lost the light and had to pack it in. When I got back home I went on the net and found comments referring to the barrel touching the stock and not free floating causing accuracy issues. I tried the piece of paper between barrel and stock and it did indeed not pass this test. So full of trepidation I set about sorting it with a dowel and sandpaper until the barrel no longer fouled the fore-stock and then I varnished the bare wood. I am thinking that maybe as the barrel was heating and expanding it was being forced up a fraction by contact with the stock. I hope so and I shall venture out again and attempt to re-zero tomorrow. Fingers crossed. I wonder if the bipod can have any effect as I know it always did on my air rifles but then again the hmr does not recoil. Any thoughts? John
  7. Hi all, I am going to buy a new CZ 452 and want to fit a 6 x 24 - 50 Scope on it. Anyone know what mounts I will need due to the size of the objective lens ? (Medium or High) Also what size the rails are on the Rifle. Many thanks John
  8. I just wanted to say thank you to Bruno22rf and The Duncan for their helpful and friendly assistance in taking me out shooting on several occasions and then vouching for my competence to the FEO in the form of a written reference. These guys are are such good chaps and I am so grateful that they gave up their time to help me out. I cannot praise their good nature and shooting expertise highly enough. The FEO has now agreed to process my FAC application which I hope to have in about 7 to 10 days so I am busy looking for a .17 HMR and the trimmings. Thanks again guys and to all the others who posted comments on this thread. The power of Pigeon Watch John
  9. Thanks everyone for your advice and comments. I have been contacted by a fairly local shooter who is willing to take me out to mentor me prior to the FEO completing my application. What a kind chap and what a great resource PW is. Thanks again regards John
  10. WOW! I didn't expect to receive offers of assistance so quickly but have already received two offers to mentor and provide the letter of assessment to my FEO. Thank you to everyone for your help and advice regarding this. John
  11. I am sadly in the same position as many others and need someone who is prepared to vouch that I am a safe and competent shot in order to gain my FAC for a .22 LR. My "Mentor" would need to send a letter to the FEO stating that he had assessed me on several occasions whilst hunting and that without prompting I could distinguish between a safe and unsafe shot. Also that I had shot X amount of rabbits on these shooting forays. I believe that I can accompany my mentor and use his rifle for him to make this judgement, then I could gain my FAC without restriction. Obviously I am looking for someone nearby and would of course meet any costs incurred etc. Also a meal in a pub and some drinks of course So anyone around the Bicester area of Oxfordshire willing to help, then please get in touch Regards John
  12. No the FEO said he would grant the FAC but that I couldn't shoot alone and needed a mentor to register with him first. Then after being assessed as a safe and competent shot by my mentor and this being in the form of letter sent to the FEo he would lift the mentoring condition. OR If I went out with a .22LR shooter who was prepared to supervise me and then vouch as to my competence, again in writing to FEO, then my FAC could be granted without the condition to start with. Hope that makes sense? John

  14. Thanks everyone for your views and advice which I appreciate greatly. Obviously I won`t agree with every reply but then that's the whole point of getting a broad spectrum of advice and opinion isn't it? It is interesting that some support the Police view and some do not. Just a few points I would like to make regarding some comments that were made. Just because you have a very active shooting community in your own village does not mean everyone else has. I have only met two other shooters in my village who both own shotguns and normally the gunfire I hear is mine! As to the jocular comments about me being a Civil Servant let me assure you I do not wear a pin stripped suit or a bowler hat or work in a office. I am in a uniformed branch of the civil service doing a job that many wouldn't or couldn't do but needs doing anyway for the benefit of the whole country. Please don't go on about pensions hahaha. Also anyone who knows about live firing exercises in the military they will know how acutely safety aware you have to be in places like Canada etc, when you have infantryman on the ground left and right etc, It is not always on a Bisley style range with butts and backstops and side berms with everyone in a straight line. Anyone who is unfortunate enough to have been shot at!Hearing rounds passing over or next to your head focuses the mind on the risk weapons pose before you take the shot. I wonder how many people have experienced that, who seem to agree that I lack "experience"? To quote the BASC, "its the calibre of the man not the weapon that's important" and the FEO should be ascertaining this himself and not via the opinion of another shooter. Anyway chin up, I shall do whatever I have to do to continue my sport by jumping through whatever hoops may be necessary and thank you for your advice comments etc regards John
  15. Hi there, bit of background about myself. I am 53 years old, married for 35years, employed as a Civil Servant and do not have as much as a parking ticket or speeding fine. I have been shooting with Air rifles from age of 11yrs, then .22 LR and full bore with the Army cadets at 13yrs and then served in the Armed Forces for 19 years including being a qualified weapons instructor and annual weapons test organiser for 10 years. I have had Shotgun certificate`s for many years and currently hold one. I held a FAC 1 certificate prior to the pistol ban. I have written permission from the local farmer to carry our vermin control on his land and have been shooting on it for several years. When my FEO interviewed me for my FAC for a .22 LR for Rabbit control, he told me that I did not have sufficient experience to be allowed out on my own with such a weapon and that I would need a mentor, in fact Thames Valley Police insist on it he said. I have heard of the need for this for centre fire rifles when applying to go deer hunting but not for a rimfire. I found it insulting that he chose to ignore my long standing experience of firearms use and the fact I have been hunting small game for 40 years with shotgun and Air Rifle. My knowledge of ballistics is very good and given that I have fired tracer ammunition I know only to well how far a ricochet can travel etc. As far as he was concerned I had only used a rifle in a "controlled environment" and he wanted evidence that I was a safe and competent shot. Remember this is the man who granted my shotgun certificate. You do not need to lecture me on the ballistics of .22 LR and the distances they can travel or how badly they can ricochet. I also know about .17 HMR as an alternative as well. You can take an unsafe shot with a 12 bore and wound or kill a person on the other side of a hedge. I understand the need for a decent background to stop the projectile also. However I am now forced to try and find someone who has the same calibre of weapon who is prepared to give up their time to be a Mentor to me. On contacting the BASC they said that Thames Valley Police were being particularly difficult in this area and that had I lived in a different county I would not have had an issue. Also the TVP were not as willing as other forces to work with BASC. Their view (BASC) is that the FEO should walk the land with me and assess my knowledge of suitable backstops etc by posing questions. In essence "if there was a rabbit there would it be safe to take a shot"? However what is currently happening is that Police Forces want shooters to police one another. That is a very risky tactic given that a "friend" could mentor someone who is unsafe but not want to decline their application, or they might produce a letter stating they are safe to shoot unsupervised without having even seen them with a rifle. I think that is a very incestuous and potentially dangerous practice. I live in a village and I do not want people without any firearms knowledge shooting at everything that moves and endangering me or my loved ones. So the situation is that I do not know anyone with a .22LR so am unable to provide a report from a mentor stating I am a safe and competent shot. This does of course suit the aims of the Police in terms of reducing gun possession. What a waste of a £50 application fee and thank you TVP for insulting me regarding my experience, common sense and the ability to carry out vermin control by putting in place such restrictive conditions as to prevent me from doing this. Anyone else have any experience in this area and I welcome your comments on this theme. John
