  1. Hi, Last year we grew a plot of maize on an fairly exposed part of the farm. By this time last year, it had all gone flat after a few nasty storms. We just used a normal seed drill, blocking some of the coulters, but I think it was still drilled at about 25-30 cm. We have grown some Utopia this year which has been brilliant, still standing and is providing really good cover. However, it is a total nightmare to establish with Flee beetle, pigeons, rabbits, pheasants, partridge etc... having a nibble, so the preferred option is growing maize. Does anyone have any tips on how to avoid flat maize? Wider drill width? Varieties which are more hardy and wont go flat in strong winds? Drill depth? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  2. Evening all, I am looking to buy a few barrels to replace some feeders around the shoot. I have attached a picture of what I am looking for and I think they are about 50 liters ish and are sometimes described as mango chutney barrels. In one of the rearing catalogues you can buy some for £9 inc vat but I thought I could pick them up locally for cheaper. Does anyone know of any good places that I can get hold of a few in North Yorkshire? I have tried some food factories but no luck so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ed
  3. First year we mixed Triticale in with it and it provided no cover really and I was pretty disappointed but second year it grew unbelievably fast and provided great cover. We didn't spray it but put nitrogen on in the spring.
  4. Hi, We planted some canary grass 2 years ago, it was a bit thin in the first year but provided brilliant cover for the pheasants this year. I have read that you are meant to cut/ top the canary grass each year to stop it becoming too thick. The crop was just right this year as it was thick but not out of control. Has anyone had any experience of topping/cutting canary grass and which time of year do you do it? I was thinking late april/early may when maize and a few other bits of game crop go in? Also I am planning to put a few more bits of canary grass in this year and was wondering if I could mix some mustard, kale or even some maize in with it first year to give it a bit more cover and for the canary grass to smother the kale/ mustard/maize in the second year. We used a triticale mix before, but the cover it provided was poor. Thanks,
  5. I will be using a 17hmr and the terrain will be fairly flat grassland and corn fields. I was looking at the ones on uk shootwarehouse and liked the lightforce 170 striker mounted light any thoughts on that???
  6. I’m sorry if this has been asked before but can anyone recommend a good lamp for lamping rabbits and where to buy it from?? Thanks

    Rifle

I am not sure this should be posted here as i am talking about rifles and not air rifles. I dont really use rifles as i have always used an airgun and a shot gun but i am thinking of getting one and i hear about people using .17hmr and .22 rifles but how many rifles are there and what is the most and least powerful rifle you can get
  8. Went out after my work this afternoon at about 3;30 this afternoon on to some clover fields. Seen quite a few feeding on it in the afternoon but are 3 fields and so they spread across them all. There is a major flightline from the wood up along a hedge in the first clover field with two more fields of clover behind it. Set up with a magnet and decoys along the hedge and sat waiting with my dog for the first pigeons. Interestingly enough the first kill of the day was a right and a left of crows! Finished the day at 6:30 and picked 30. A good few hours but there is potential for even more as they were also landing on spring drilling that was drilled a few days ago just passed the wood. Good day out!! cant wait for some more clover shooting over the next few weeks!!
  9. Hi guys, took my hyperflaps out today and admittedly there was a breeze but the wings just kept on folding up and not working. luckily i shot two and was able to put them on the magnet but what do you guys use on the magnet apart from hyperflaps before u shoot a couple of pigeons??
  10. Apart from the Chris Green dvd's which I have already watched are there any other good pigeon decoying dvd's that you would recommend???
  11. The basics for pigeon shooting is to have about 12-15 decoys full bodied and shell, camo net, shotgun, ear defenders, then in order to add movement to the decoys pattern you could buy a pigeon magnet and 2-3 floaters and maybe a couple of landing decoys but landers are not essential.
  12. I have recently started shooting with Weihrauch F&T special pellets and they are brilliant pellets do any of you guys ue them??
  13. Just had a little look at this website. Has anyone one on here subscribed to this website?? If so is it worth it??
  14. that would be really kind buddy! where have you been game and wildfowl shooting??
  15. Thanks TJ. You shot all those crows yet???
