I am not sure what year the rotary / magnet was first put in use , maybe late 70s , early 80s ? , well we are now in 2024 so they could now have been in use for a good 50 years and have became a normal piece of kit for just about everyone who go Pigeon decoying , we all had good days in the early years but as the years roll on we have to admit they no longer have the pulling power that they once did , nearly every year this subject crop up and we can all put the reasons why they don't work one day and yet the next day they work just fine , as already said that in most cases you could get more shooting with it out than you would with it been unused in the hide , I say more shooting rather than more decoying as nowadays they seem less likely to comit to the decoys with the rotary going around in circles  that is placed not far from the decoy pattern , in the Summer months I now leave it at home and just stick to static decoys and a couple on floaters , how refreshing it is to see a Pigeon that come into the decoys without flaring off when it is all but in range .

We now know that the GL is amended and updated from time to time and I wander how long it will be before they stop the use of any battery operated devices , might not ever happen but with all the various threats on shooting it could well happen and could happen more or less overnight .   MM

Where magnets around in the 70s and 80s ? Obviously manual flappers were first time I saw a rotary was about 1998 and that was a home made one I started shooting in the mid 80s never heard about them or saw one

  2. Sounds like it was one of those days where they just don't want to commit no matter what you do with or without gadgets I've had countless days like that,  the magnet has got me shooting when they won't decoy even it only brings them on the edge of range  for a shot I would have had next to nothing without it  20 or 30 on a difficult day is better than nothing

    Always spooks them 🤔

I've never found a rotary to spook pigeons all the time

  4. Sounds like a good trip to me i was up in perth last week of November and had a couple of goose and duck flights last time I shot geese in Scotland was over 30 years i wished i had gone more in that time  I'll be back next season without a doubt

  5. I grew up rough shooting it used to be a weekly thing In season and some of the bags we got were so varied at times pheasant partridge duck woodcock pigeon  a wish I could of took some pics of them but didn't have mobile phones 35 years ago only over the last  15 years or so I started taking bag pics first on a digital camera then phone camera  I remember one day 3 of us had our own DIY shoot had  a walk round it was blowing a gale and cold  we had partridge duck and pheasant in the bag then  came across a pigeon flightline going into a small wood so we headed to it and spent rest of the afternoon in the wood  2 small flight ponds in it the pigeons kept coming  ended up with 65 then the teal and mallard  came into the ponds so  bagged more duck I can't remember a better day than that or what the final head of game and wildfowl was but it was very good  it was about 1998 I think

Some years ago I was sat in the car on a stubble field, I was about 75 yards from the gate when I noticed a police car pull into the gateway, it stopped there for about ten minutes and then drove slowly up the field and stopped next to me, I never got out the car, and neither did they, the copper in the passenger side side good morning and I replied the same, he then said, are you doing some shooting today, I said hopefully, he then just said can I ask your full name and address please, which I gave, he then said have a nice day and drove out the field.

It was obvious they knew I had SGC/FAC and who I was before they approached me.

Yep they would of run a check on your reg as they were sat behind you so once you said your name and address it matched with the info they already had on you so no need to go any further, if it  was America they would of shouted get out the car with 9mm glocks pointed at you

I was called out last Wednesday as the farmers agrologist had informed him that the pigeons were destroying his rape. So I headed out to the field with the thought of shooting loads of pigeons. When I arrived the field was devoid of any birds so I set up in my favourite place under a giant Ash tree, which gives me plenty of protection from the wind and sun. During the time I was setting up six pigeons flew over me seeing the decoys. Once I was set up and in the hide nothing for thirty minutes. Then I heard the familiar cry of a Canada goose as the flock flew over me to land in the field, they were too high to shoot so I put up a warning shot and they landed on the lake on the next farm.

After three hours no pigeons arrived and I packed up. Stopping at the farm on the way back home I had a talk with the farmer and he will put a gas gun on the edge of the field close to the lake!!

On Thursday night I had a missed call from Bunny_Blaster he sent me a text on Friday saying he was going out looking and would I be interested to shoot on Saturday. It was a YES obviously. I had been out looking but not seen a bird on my permissions. He rang me to say he had found a good number on one of his rape fields so we arranged to meet up at 09.00.

As I set out in the morning it was minus 3 degrees and foggy , they predicted that it would clear for two hours then freeze again. I met up with BB and we drove around the estate in the fog disturbing nothing out of the trees and decided to set up in the hope that the fog would clear and give us some shooting. I had eleven thawed birds as decoys put two on the magnet and the others on cradles above the rape. Not sure of the time but could have been 10.30. We had various gas guns around us and they sent us birds, the first in BB dropped two and I had a third. I went downhill after that missing bird after bird ( I had not shot since August) The fog thinned a bit but did not clear as predicted. We shot till 15.00 and picked up 46 pigeons. I must thank BB for the invite and the banter it was refreshing.

I must also thank Yickdaz and our other Northern Shooters for sending down the pigeons south as part of the “Levelling up Process”!!

Just a quick update on my current condition. I have concluded eleven months of four weekly infusions and daily steroids which has brought my Myeloma under control. In a  few weeks I will have a plasma extracted from my blood cleansed ready for a Stem Cell transplant in January.

I have built up my fitness to walking on average 5.5 miles a day, which has allowed me to be put forward for the treatment

Well done and don't mention it, but can you send them back up this way thanks 👍

  8. Went out looking for pigeons initially met up with the old fella on a block of land with a couple of rape fields  on it nothing touching the rape which is weird in this cold spell and hardly any acorns around this area so we ended up having a walk round the ditch sides and  some rough cover i recently bought a  20g  and hadn't shot any game or pigeons with it only clays to get used to the gun  turned out to be a cracker of a day ended up with 7 pheasants and a couple of pigeons in the bag between us one was a feral  using 24g steel 4s and 5s

I’ve used a lot of steel, all HP, both through Winchester 101’s from the 1980’s, a Browning 2000 and the only HP steel shot proofed gun I own, a Benelli M1 Super 90. I will shoot steel through my trap guns also, when there is no alternative.
There’s nothing wrong with steel, but there’s nothing wrong with lead either.
I have talked to reps from both Gamebore and Eley about their steel shot, and they have more to lose than I do if it doesn’t work in non-steel shot proofed guns.
I’m not worried at all, simply annoyed.

I agree nothing wrong with lead, but its on the horizon that we won't be able to to use it so I'm ready now I've switched all my guns to steel proofed ones  even though you can shoot steel through  SOME non steel proofed guns and get away with it  I'm doing it for piece of mind plus you will have trouble selling a non steel proofed one when lead is banned

I'm sorry, but that's not what the phase out stated.

It was a phase out of lead shot for live quarry shooting, whatever the purpose for it. I don't see where BASC, or any other shooting org, had the authority to put this forward without any consultation whatsoever.

It's also interesting how, within 1 month of the announcement, the HSE put forward it's proposals and consultation plans, upon asking if BASC et al had any idea this was coming, they stated categorically they did not.

It's my belief there was collusion in some way, obviously it can never be proven, but it calls into question the aims and trustworthiness of our shooting orgs.

What do you think their aim is ?

You only gain respect where it is deserved, and he certainly doesn't deserve it as far as I’m concerned.
I sat through a BASC audience with Swift many moons ago, at the Shepherds Inn, Carlisle, where he tried to convince everyone there that wildfowl were dying in droves via the absorption of lead shot. No one believed him and several told him so in very clear terms, with some asking where they all were, if that were the case. Swift replied that it was rare to find dead animals in the wild as carcasses were soon disposed of by other wild animals, a reply to which the same person asked ‘well if that’s the case how does anyone know how many are dying?’ Bit of an awkward silence after that one admittedly.
Shooting organisations may well be committed to a voluntary transition away from lead shot, but I don’t know of anyone who is equally committed, organisation member or not.
Every single shooter I know has stated they will use lead until it is no longer available.

Fair enough but you will end up using non toxic in the end, try using some steel carts you might be surprised by the results I haven't used lead  for 5 years steel only because I can sell on steel shot pigeons  you need non toxic   for Wildfowl so i thought stuff I I'll just use steel full stop so I'm more than ready for when lead is banned I'll just carry on as usual with no gripes

To my knowledge blank firing guns are orange or blue but the criminal fraternity paint them black and convert them to fire live rounds.

If I had a gun pointed at me after giving warnings I would double tap, that’s the job.

Exactly don't give them reason to shoot you in the first place its common sense well not that common as we all know

I'm not an active fan of BASC, but not a basher either. I have opinions on most things, as we all do.

I don't always agree with Connor's agenda (which of course in turn is BASCs agenda), and sometimes find some of his posts inflammatory or appearing to be butthurt. But, as a representation of an organisation he will rarely win either way as it's a damned if you do or damned if you don't.

I do however appreciate that he has had the decency to reach out and call, and sort out an issue privately. I have seen him offer this several times and respect that greatly.

    Back on topic......

It's great the OP was assisted by BASC. I have only one negative experience and that related to me offering to volunteer my time to new shooters on behalf of BASC and basically having a brush off. But, if that's not on their agenda then that's me who felt it was negative, rather than it being negative.
I don't agree with all their policies, but agree with many of them. I think we need to remove the "clay shooters should support game shooters even if it's to their detriment! One Team, boys" attitude and look at "how do we have a pragmatic voice that supports all shooters, and appreciates that sometimes disciplines conflict in their needs, and how we can use this to our advantage". That, and understanding that if we had a split where clay shooters can use lead and game shooters must use steel, that the disadvantaged side is just "happy" it's not a complete ban rather than "if we can't have it, why should they?". We need to be supportive and take the wins. I am sure there are examples the other way around, and as a poor example I do agree that clay shooters should help complete "game shooter only surveys" to support their fellow shooter.

    JMHO.

I think you'll find a lot of clay shooters shoot game also, most of the top well known clay shooters are definitely game and pigeon shooters so they will be on our side  but yes there are staunch clay only shooters who need to get on-board

  14. I've had the same scenario a few times one time in November about 5 years ago  there was over  2000 pigeons on 2 old stubbles next to each other I got out the car they all lifted I watched with my mouth open as they all disappeared into the distance I set up not a one came back they were definitely migrant birds because they hadn't been around in previous weeks  they are so hard to do anything with

  15. Thing is with this people are not gearing themselves up for whats coming, and they are going to shoot lead to the very last  so when the time comes  to move over to non toxic mainly steel they won't have a clue what's best to use gun and cart wise

Why don't folk move with the times and accept change is coming and get on with it?

They have used steel shot on the continent for years for clays and game without too many issues.

If we want the sport to survive then maybe we have to move on and evolve?

The three Wigeon and a Pintail I got on the shore on Friday were shot at a sporting range with steel 4s through my 690-3 and stone dead.

I shot a driven day last sat using 32g 4s  steel all day  after one drive  I shot 6 stone dead in air at 45 to 50 yards ok not a high bird shoot but a 50 yard pheasant or anything is a good bird in my opinion one picker up asked what shell's I was using after I told him and handed him one of them he said I wouldn't of believed that had I not seen it also asked what chokes i was using 1/2 and 3/4 then asked and have you had any issues using those chokes non whatsoever I've been using steel for everything since 2018 so I'm well used to them by now and know the capability of them the guy who asked has never used steel so he will be a little bit more informed

  16. I've seen it myself many times  gas pipes literally touching the underside of floorboards if you don't set the circular saw to the  exact or better slightly under the floorboard thickness  you will hit them,

I ripped a bathroom out years ago and exact same thing a Brad nail right through middle of the 22mm  hot pipe it never  leaked until disturbed  been there for many years without leaking

  17. Not often you get to wear a t-shirt  in October in 70 degree weather, birds still on an old stubble ankle heigh with weed and re grown barley seed  set up at 1pm enjoyed a nice afternoon popping pigeons  it was steady never hectic they dried up at 3.30pm  ended with 46 and a magpie

Well done Daz, fill your boots while you have the birds, may need a second freezer???

My shooting vehicle has thrown a shocker bracket and booked in for repair so I’ve not been out on my farms. Bunny_Basher informs me that there are not many about, perhaps there all up north??

    A fourth you mean

Well they are here at the moment it can all change very quickly and they can vanish

Remember shooting a barley field some 25 odd years ago where the pigeons were just suicidal, I was shooting with a mate and the shooting was almost none stop from the time we setup at 11am, after the first hour we stopped picking birds up and they were lying every which way and the birds just kept coming, by 2pm we had run out of cartridges so I did a drive home and picked up 600 cartridges, when I got back to the field my mate was out in the field picking some birds and they were still trying to land in the decoys, we run out of cartridges again about 5pm with birds still piling into the field but we’d had enough and called it a day.

Never had a day like it before or since and still talk about it with my mate and neither of us could understand what was driving those birds on that day but that's pigeons for you, as they say.

    What was the final bag

  20. I'm expecting  the pigeons to fade away any week now they always do once the stubbles have been ploughed but at the min they are still going on disced fields went back to the same area we shot sat and sun last week and they were still here in big numbers  spread over 3 fields if was a bit of a dilema where to set up for the best, but settled  on a spot  it was 1.30pm and didn't take long before birds were in  not all decoyed  so it a very sporting afternoon all kinds  of shots they slowed up dramatically at 5pm  and just stopped 15 mins later birds were still going in at the bottom of the field but it wasn't worth packing up and moving  they are switching off  before 6pm and it will get earlier and earlier as the weeks go by we picked 90 lost a few
