  1. Haven't had much to report shot next to nothing on rape all winter, spring drilling didn't produce much a few small days on the crows and pigeons they just haven't been around for the last 8 months
  2. Went out this afternoon looking for birds on clover no spring rape or peas grown at all in the areas we shoot so have limited options this time of year, the grass hadn't been cut and was waist heigh 2 spring drilling nearby 3 inch high with a lot of weed growth in it they were going on that but not in huge numbers and not a great flightline into them but gave it a go anyway very slow going shot 34 in 3 hrs 2.30 till 5.30 picked 30 as the title says better than nothing
  3. My averages go down dramatically when I use the hushpower its frustrating you can't help think to yourself i would of put another 20 birds in the bag with my standard 12g still a good bag though
  4. Miroku mk 70 3in chamber steel proof 18.7 bore
  5. I use teague internal chokes 1/2 and 5/8 put thousands of hp steel through them up to 3inch 2 shot and they screw in and out the gun like new its just more myths about only using up 1/4 choke
  6. If you could answer this conor I don't get into the politics of shooting very often I tend to just get on with it but this question has never been answered and doubt it ever will but why can I shoot pigeons with lead say on a Sept stubble nowhere near any wetland but if a duck happened to pass over in range which has happened more than once I would have to change over to non toxic shot quickly to shoot it, I shoot steel now at everything anyway mainly so I have more options to sell the pigeons on so wouldn't it be an issue nowadays the whole thing is just a contradiction in terms and not logical it has always baffled me and many others
  7. I'm also saying it's not essential to have cold weather to make them go on rape I've had shoots on very mild days windy days are the best but when they don't have any other options due to hard frost and snow you can bet they will turn to it
  8. Well they can't get to the acorns when they are 2in under snow and frozen to the ground so obviously they turn to crops that are above snow level and they can get at it and I've not seen any on rape until this cold snap
  9. I looked around a few different areas nothing on the first two areas then found birds sat in a small wood and the trees surrounding the field about 300 in total i gave them an hour from 12.30 to 1.30pm managed 6 then the snow came down again and that was it
  10. Well this snow will push them on to it so worth it
  11. Just wondering if there has Been any change around the country is anyone seeing birds on rape after the recent cold snap
  12. i;m sure you will find some pc you aways do and i bet you make the 600 needed
  13. Shot the same barley stubble we shot 103 on last sat, nice wind today so knew that woukd keep them on the move although they wanted to go in on the down wind side of the field whilst watching them enough birds we're pulling to the upwind side of it so I set up at 1pm with the wind at my back on a ditch side that had tall bracken growing on the bank enough to give cover and let the hide blend in, set the rotary and flapper up and 12 decoys birds came from the off slipping and sliding in the wind the whole session gave tricky testing shooting a lot of instinctive shooting they slowed up about 5pm so called it a day a lot of packing up and birds to find total was 125 picked and about 10 lost
  14. thats exactly how it is with us i make a note each year of the bag numbers in certain areas and there;s a definite pattern to each area they come good one year and bad the next you get to know which area will be good or not each year saves a lot of driving and fuel
  15. Been a decent harvest 1 particular area has produced the most consistent shooting a Massive block of stubbles separated by deep ditches and the birds have been using most of them so picking the right field has been tricky with broad flight lines from different directions the last 6 weeks we have flighted them decoyed them split up on different fields yried allsorts and it ranged from bags of 30 up to 130 today was the best we got on the right field it was obvious that they wanted this field so made it easier to decide what to do set up at a pile of straw at one end of the field with 2 whirlies and a block of decoys inbetween them switched one of them off halfway through because it was deterring birds from coming all the Way in they have been shot at about a dozen times with us using the rotary in this area so they we're a bit shy of them a lot of birds came for a look but skirted the pattern just out of range enough came in range obviously to make a bag picked 103 lost about 7 birds bag numbers from July Aug and up to now below pics are not in any order and not all the bags had pics taken apart from The last that was today 30 62 40 84 50 51 56 80 32 40 42 54 38 103
  16. I know a few who shoot 10s of thousands per year and the birds get processed one way or another so are they not doing a good job I beg to differ You can do what the farmer has asked you to and still sell the birds on
  17. seen birds dropping into a a standing wheat field today i think it was for the weed growth in the tramlines, but they will start on all standing crops round about now
  18. Well it does they don't want this anymore than the Ukrainian people but they are being arrested for protesting and what can they do putin won't stand for any backlash from his own people he will silence them and even worse if they stand up to him
