  1. OK, just to put an end to this. We went and saw the original GP tonight, myself, my son and also his mum, that way there would be at least two adults to listen to what was said and make sure we didn't miss anything. It was fairly obvious from the off he wasn't going to contradict the GP who wrote the letter, he did however say that if he had wrote it he wouldn't have expressed an opinion as to my sons suitablity to hold a SGC (as the other GP had done) as that was up to the police. He then went on to say that neither he or the other GP had any real understanding of my sons condition (Aspergers Syndrome) and that there had been very little contact with him over the years (as there is no medical treatment). He did ask me several times if I was sure the Transistions Team report didn't say he was discharged for lack of progress, I said that I had read it several times and that was not what it said, I also said he could check it himself as it was in his records on the PC in front of him as he had looked at it during the original appointment with him last September. He then went on to say that he may have given the wrong impression during that appointment and that as he remembered it we came to see him about my sons benefits and that I only mentioned the SGC as I was just about out of the door!, this is definetly not true and he made no reference to this during our first meeting after I got a copy of the other GPs letter to the police or in his subsequent letter to me. My son even picked up on this and said that wasn't what happened. He did offer to try and find "some sort of specialist" who would maybe look at my son and give a more current picture of him but he didn't know who to ask and would think about it. I again explained that without him writing to the police and stating that the other GPs letter was in places factualy incorrect and for most of the rest of it presented a completely inaccurate view of my son and was based on a report that is almost 3 years old which in itself was based on only 6x45min visits to the Transistions Team. Seeing there was obviously no way of getting this I changed tack and suggested that as his application is now withdrawn there seemed no point in pushing the issue further and to leave it at that, the last thing I need is to get into a legal fight with him as I will be re-applying for my FAC in about 2 months time. The idea of his own SGC is simple, I will not be here forever, I am physically disabled and it is a deteriorating condition, driving a 50 mile round trip to shoot can be very taxing some weeks, he has a personal assistant who would be able to take him instead of me if he had his own SGC and gun. I must point out, biased or not, that he is a very safe shooter and has almost 5 years experience with more types of firearms that the majority of his fellow club members put together. I am also a member of another shooting club (rifle and pistol) and will see what they say about him joining as he will be able to shoot air powered riles/pistols without a problem. They also shoot 22 rimfire amd pistol calibre rifle and I will ask about him taking the safety course and seeing if he can continue to shoot using club guns without applying for a FAC or if there is a time limit. Once again thank you all for your replies.
  2. Would have to disagree Loved my .44, lost count of how many rounds I put through it I also reloaded my own with a nice low/medium load for 25m indoor target and the odd full load when shooting on the range Now looking at the Taurus .44 with the (annoying) counterweight as I can't stand the standard brace thing. Powders have changed a bit since I last did this but looking at about 5.2g of Titegroup with a 240g lead semi-wadcutter for indoors
  3. Similar experiences in Florida over the last 10 years or so. Couple of ranges were a bit iffy but showed them my SGC and they were more helpful. My son also shoots with me there and (as yet) has no SGC but he's not had a problem. All ranges should go over basic safety, range proceedure and operation of whatever you decide to use. We.ve shot just about everything, .22 target pistol, 9mm Glocks, .44 Ruger Redhawk, 9mm Spike assault rifle, 9mm Beretta Cx4 Storm, fully auto H&K MP5 and on our last visit a very nice Steyr HS .50 M1 at 1000yds
  4. As it stands at the moment his application has been withdrawn so there will be no refusal. I spoke to Durham Firearms this morning and as usual they were very helpful, they can't issue a SGC with a "Must be supervised" condition to someone his age, only to those who are required by law to have it. One thing that came about as a result of a conversation with someone else was that I should look at having the GP who wrote the letter charged with providing false information to the police, if he had just expressed his opinion then fair enough but parts of his letter are completely incorrect and we have the same medical reports he used and mis-quoted from to confirm this. I still have to see the original GP on Thursday but short of a 180 degree turnaround I can't see him being very helpful. Looks like it's going to have to go legal and messy :( edit. Forgot to add, there's no medical treatment for Aspergers so nobody sees him on a regular basis, we've just had a meeting with his social worker and that was the first time we've heard from him for a year!.
  5. I miss my 6 1/2" S&W 29 :( I had a shot of the Taurus .44 in the US last year, didn't like the feel of it, I'm sure my S&Ws action was a lot smoother. Mind you, I also shot a Ruger Redhawk and didn't like that either so it may just be me
  6. artschool, have you found any at a good price?, best I've found so far is from Pets & Pastimes. Website pricing is unclear, either £515 or £599 and possibly plus an extra £95 with a lightened barrel nut there's no option to add this at checkout etc.
  7. I've spoken to the police about getting an independent report from a specialist but the problem they have is the first doctors letter, unless he admits he doesn't know my son and has incorrectly stated "facts" about his being discharged for not making progress with the transistions team they can only go on what he has written. I will raise all the points with the first GP when I see him on Thursday and unless he agrees to correct in writing the other GPs mistakes I will be lodging a formal complait with him and also contacting the Equalities and Human Rights Commission as the false information now held on file by the police is breaching my sons Human Rights and preventing him from enjoying his only sporting activity. We did go to archery twice a week but due to my health problems and shoulder damage from a car accident over 3 years ago we have not been able to continue with that. FInding a sport he can enjoy and which will enhance his social skills and allow him to make friends is vital to his continued developement as a human being. I'm also going to phone the police tomorrow morning and ask if they will consider it with the supervised condition, as he doesn't drive he would always have to be taken to the shoot (25 miles away) either by myself or hopefully once he gets his SGC by his personal assistant (who was vetted by the police in order to get the job).
  8. Just had a look and I assume it's the same one he had up for sale earlier this month, 12g, 28" and £450 http://forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk/forums/index.php?/topic/149870-escort-overunder/
  9. Give us a clue gauge? price? Also interested and just round the corner from you
  10. We did discuss the Aspergers with the FEO when he did his visit, it looked like he had done some research beforehand as he had a fair idea of what to expect. Again I would stress that he passed the FEOs interview with flying colours, as he has every other range safety or firearm handling test he's taken at ranges in the USA since he was 15. The aggression the doctor referred to was basically him telling me to F@@@ off when he's not willing to do things I ask like get showered or tidy his room, this (as having 2 other kids to go by) seems to be fairly normal for almost every teenager, most seem to go through that stage. The difference is that he was only doing it to prove to himself that by me not letting him push me away I really do care for him and that I wasn't going to leave him like his mum did. We have worked on this and now he's now into his 20's that stage has passed. Aspergers is a wide spectrum disorder which means that while all Aspies share some common traits they are all different. Obviously I am biased as he's my son but there is no-one at the club that thinks he isn't safe to shoot, in fact in some ways he's actually safer than a lot of people as he will only do things the way he has been shown to, anything out of the ordinary happens (like a misfire) and he follows safety proceedure to the letter.
  11. Hi, I have a surplus Lee 4 Hole Auto Index Turret Press (Lee 90932), http://www.leeprecision.com/cgi/catalog/browse.cgi?1295264806.3584=/html/catalog/turretpress.html This is basically brand new, I got it as part of the Lee reloading kit and found it can't be used for .308 with the auto-index, as I'm a lazy sod I bought a Classic Turret Press to replace it. It's been out of the box, assembled for a trial run, cycled as far as seating a bullet and then put back in the box so never actually fully loaded a single round :( Sportsmans are selling it at £89.87 and Henry Krank at £76 so looking for about £60 Collection would be ideal as it's heavy but I will post and only charge actual postage no rip off charges
  12. We went shooting at the Manatee Gun Club 1000yd range in Florida on our trip last November, our friends new husband is into long range and let us play with his nice new Steyr HS .50 M1 The one thing I realised straight away was that I really need to get some better glasses!!
  13. I'll take 2 tins please, let me know how you want payment. If they're cheaper for collection I may take 5 tins
  14. Did mine this morning as well stuck everything that would fit into the ultrasonic cleaner filled with Hopes cleaner then dried off and gave a very light coat of Hopes gun oil, you'd be surprised how much muck comes out in the ultrasonic!!. All back together now and silky smooth
  15. Thanks for the info, no-one has mentioned the supervised option, I assume I need to ring the firearms team and ask about it?. All the stands on our shoot have a "range officer" present, would this be classed as supervised?.
  16. Just to clarify, The first GP we saw is the head of the practice, senior partner. None of the GPs there have seen much of my son as he wasn't diagnosed with Aspergers until he was 15 and there's no medical treatment they can provide. The only times he's been to the doctors since being diagnosed were for an ingrowing toenail and two discussions with the first GP. The first was last March about him leaving college and being put on Employment Support Allowance, Welfare Rights had advised us to see him and get a "not-fit note" put in place before he left college. The second time was the pre shotgun application discussion in September, if he hadn't been so enthusiastic and supportive we wouldn't have bothered to apply. The only other support we have is from Social Services or whatever they are called now, that took 2-1/2 years and a formal complaint before they were forced into providing direct payments so we could employ a personal assistant (to take some of the strain off me as I'm physically disabled) and to encourage him to be more independent. He gets a huge 10 hours of support a week, not even enough for her to stay overnight and let me have a break :( Other than that he/we get no support at all so getting him to be more independent is vital as I won't be here forever and there's no-one else going to offer to take care of him. I know they have to cover their backsides but he is a great kid (young adult!), no-one has anything bad to say about him in fact anyone who takes the time to get to know him says he's kind, polite and charming with a great sense of humour. Again thanks for the replies
  17. Thanks for all the replies. The GP who wrote the letter is himself a clay pigeon shooter, but not in our club. The club are 100% happy with him but are unwilling to get involved until the police contact them first, they have worries over their section 11 coverage if he gets a refusal and wants to continue shooting, I did ask the police who said there was no reason why he couldn't continue. I'll see what the original GP has to say on Thursday but short of a letter saying the other GP was wrong (highly unlikely) it looks like his chances of being able to shoot independent of me in the future (which is a step he needs to take) is simply not going to happen.
  18. Hi I have a 20yr old son who has Aspergers Syndrome, a mild form of Autism. He has been a full member of our shooting club and has been safely shooting clay pigeon for over 4 years. He has also shot full bore pistol and rifle (up to .50) during our trips to the USA. Back in September 2010 we went to see his GP (head of practice) and had a lengthy (20-30mins) discussion with him about my son applying for a shotgun certificate of his own, as we would have to notify the police about his Aspergers (even though it is not a mental illness). He looked through his medical records and said that as far as he was concerned there was no reason why not and in fact was very supportive in general as the socialising aspect of being part of a club/group would help his developement. We then sent off his application and had a visit from the FEO about 2 weeks later, he did his inspection (I already have a SC so no problem there), went through all the usual questions and was 100% happy with him. After not hearing anything for six weeks we contacted Durham firearms section, they asked about the doctors visit, I told them what he had said and they seemed confused, eventually they suggested I contact the surgery and get a copy of the letter they had been sent. Having done this I was at first surprised as the letter was from a different doctor at the practice, one who had only seen my son twice in 20yrs for about 10mins for an ingroing toenail!. After reading what he had written I am exteremly upset as the majority of what he had written was not only factually incorrect but he twice said that my son had been discharged from the NHS Transistions Team Service for lack of progress, he had in fact been discharged when he reached 18 as they only deal with 16 to 18yr olds, his small amount of progress is quite typical of Aspergers, change can take a long time. As no-one had bothered to tell us this service was available we only found out about it by accident when he was 17-1/2 so he only had 6 months of support instead of the 2yrs he should have had, this obviously didn't help. He also cited anger issues, lack of social abilities and destructive behaviour, the anger (and we are talking verbal never ever been physical) is directed towards me to reinforce the fact that I am there and not going to leave him as his mum did when he was 15. The lack of social ability is standard for "Aspies" but he is not (as was implied) anti-social, he is, like most Aspies, very sociable but it takes him time as he doesn't always understand body language or emotional signals. The destructive behaviour was cutting holes in his own clothes and bedroom furniture as he becomes bored, this stopped about 6 months ago after we talked about it. At the end of the letter he states "I feel that it would not be safe to grant Jared a certificate at this moment in time" there is nothing in his medical condition to support this, he walks away from confrontation and despite being continually bullied through 3 years of mainstream college, even coming home with a bleeding head after he was pelted with stones, he has never once done anything except walk away. Needless to say the police say there is no chance of his application being granted with such a damning letter in place, they have been extremely helpful throughout this and have agreed to let us withdraw his application before it is refused but of course the letter will stay on file. I have talked to the original doctor about the letter and after thinking about it for 3 weeks he wrote and said he would be willing to write another letter but he now doesn't think it will help, he hasn't said he would agree to correct the errors in the previous doctors letter. I've got an appointment to see him about this next week after I told the practice manager I wanted a copy of their formal complaints proceedure, I also mentioned that I had contacted the National Aspergers Society who advised me to make a complaint to the Equalities and Human Rights Commission. So as it stands at the moment there is no chance of him being granted a certificate. Has anyone been through anything similar or could offer any advice plese?
  19. No prob As for the name ............ http://www.amazon.com/Phaedra-Tangerine-Dream/dp/B00000DR5E Heard this on the John Peel show one night and that was me into German Electronic music for life!!
  20. What calibre are you wanting to reload?, asking as I have an as new in the box Lee Deluxe Reloading Kit http://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk/product/154b151b6c105f9431893155/Lee+Deluxe+4+Hole+Turret+Auto+Index+Reloading+Kit+%2728LEE90928%2729/ Bought it to do .44 and .308 and when I put it together I found it doesn't do .308 with the auto-index, only without so being a lazy sod I bought a Classic Turret Press instead So, it's been out of the box, put together, cycled once and not loaded a single cartridge :( Now back in the box as new. Looking for £80 plus postage at cost.
  21. I'd also be interested in a load for the .308, our range specifies the following, "Full bore rifles loaded up to 475 ft/lb m.e. or 1700 f.p.s. velocity" Just found this, http://www.reloadersnest.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=15828 H 4895, 27.3 grs. Avg. three shots 1,522 fps " , 28.0 grs. Avg. three shots 1,604 fps " , 29.5 grs. Avg. three shots 1,668 fps " , 30.0 grs. Avg. three shots 1,752 fps (with a wide range of velocities). This was using a 150g bullet
