    Pointless H&S

My caveat here, is I can only see what's in the picture and have no other detail. So, I think that the barrier has 2 purposes: stop someone falling into the hole & probably more importantly stopping someone going being hit by the swinging arm of the digger as it rotates away from the hole. I know little about digger operations, my suspicion though, is; that if there are (lets say) only 2 operatives (digger and banksman), then they can concentrate on the job and not "keep an eye" on the off-chance someone gets too close as they swing to: dig, release or take a break. If I were doing the job I'd put a barrier up so that I could concentrate on the job and not extraneous variables over which I have no control. I recon the barrier would take about 5 mins to put up - so time well spent.
  2. Had a TD5 disco auto. I had no probs with the engine at all, pulled like a train, great off road too. Well over 150k miles TDCI defender performance has been good, easy motorway speeds and refined for a defender!.......but I've spent some cash on it.EGR valve had been ongoing, 3 in 2 years, now suffering ECU probs. Just over 100k miles. Also routine jobs like changing fuel filter needs to be done carefully (with a diesel filled filter) as there is no way to bleed the engine without a "special tool" ( I 've been called a special tool before!), TD5 will self bleed.
  3. sometimes Machine Mart do their (equivalent to) VAT free promotions, it might be worth waiting until one of these to get your MIG machine
  4. Just had a wee test drive of the Ranger this morning -- pretty impressed so far. Cash wise it's a wee bit more than the L200, BUT the Ford finance is 0% at the moment making it actually more affordable..................oh decisions decisions!!!
  5. Hi all, although you're probably all bored of this question....mine is about the brand new ones. After being a Landy owner for years: series, defender and a brief foray with a disco. I'm about to get rid of my TDCI 90. I'm a bit sick of trips to the garage, and so thought I might bite the bullet and buy new. I've had a test drive of the L200 which I quite liked - the dealer however was rubbish and knew nothing about the vehicle or it's drive train. Tried am Isuzu D-max...mmmm think I preferred the 200, at least ON the road. Off to try a Ranger tomorrow.......(gotta say though the TDCI engine puts me off a bit, the Landy one has been a heart ache) .........so does anyone have a current model, they could comment on? ( if you've a 200, what model ?as, far as I can see the 4 life has a locking rear diff, the others a centre....asked the dealer lots of questions about this, he clearly didn't understand how a diff worked. How are they off road?) Cheers
  6. I had this and was house-bound for 6mths! As someone who instructs rock-climbing & mountaineering - it was pretty hellish. It took me a time after this to get over the associated vertigo feelings. I described it as feeling drunk all the time without the associated great ideas!!! I realise that all sounds a bit doom & gloom - but there have been no recurrences thus far (and it was a few years ago) and I know that some people recover very quickly and others less so.
  7. "please scan, the barcode, select another option, or just finish and pay", ......slight delay in operator's action, results in "please scan, the barcode, select another opti...", operator scans then too much delay in putting item across leads to "unexpected item in the baggage area" then caught in the terminal trying to put item back and re-scan loop. DRIVES ME NUTS, I tell you. It never seems to be straightforward!! ................also in the supermarket I think to myself (rather erroneously) "nice one a short queue at the self service", then during scanning remember I've a bottle of wine & a DVD "authorisation required". I find the whole thing slow and painful.
  8. I've just bought a Disco 2 -- I'll defo take this off you.
  9. This is just what i'm looking for I'll buy this from you. PM sent

    Best freesat

I'm no TV aficionado, all I want to do is switch it on & choose the best of the bunch that's on at any given time (although I do like the HD nature stuff on the BBC channels form time to time). When I moved into my current house there was a satellite dish installed. I bought an Bush HD box from Argos (and a Bush standard one for the bedroom), ran the cables. Jobs-a-good-un. I'm really pleased with them, no troubles at all, great picture (I'm not interested in recording, it's all repeated anyway!!!) - you can add Non-freesat; Free-to-View channels manually. If you just want TV, I'd give them a punt (not at all expensive).
  13. As said above, crampons are for ice/ hard snow (I'm a qualified Winter Mountain Leader). The problems you'll have in wearing them on soft mud or other soft ground is that they will "ball up". That is when they act a wee bit like a pie cutter so will give great grip for the first step or two, but they will hold onto the mud until they fill, then they will become very heavy and slippery. The same thing happens with soft snow too, which requires a sharp tap with an ice axe after every step to knock it off (you can get anti-ball plates for your boot soles, but I can't see them having any effect on mud). I'm not sure what your solution is here, but I really don't think it's crampons (although I thought the rugby boot idea was a good'un)!
  14. Also, get her to contact - Prince's Youth Business Trust --- They'll set her up with an Advisor who can give her lots of sage advice and no doubt some introductory courses on book keeping, management etc. I started my first business with help from them when I was in my early 20s, it was very helpful
  15. Hi All, I've a few questions about crow shooting, I apologise in advance if these are simple questions/ obvious answers. I just want to make sure that I am 100% ok, before pointing my gun. I have a reasonable amount of shooting experience (a few years, but I still consider myself a bit of a novice). This is mostly rough shooting: geese & ducks on friends' permissions in another area (I have my own shotgun & SGC). Crows: I manage an outdoor centre in central Scotland, and during the year the crows (and some magpies) are a bit of a pain. We are not over-run by any stretch of the imagination, but their droppings (on our activities) and "bin raids" can be problematical. Now is my quiet season - and I'm thinking to myself: I could do with removing these noisey brutes and could do with the target practice. Legal bit: As I understand the General License, I need to have a reason to shoot any birds, I imagine the above (with the exception of target practise!) is reason enough. My company (charity) owns the land and I am responsible for it (devolved powers from my CEO, who is at another site - he would like to see the birds gone). We are rural and sit on our own --- but do have some domestic houses 400m away (down the drive) and are adjacent to a golf course. The Queen Elizabeth Forest Park (forestry commission) is at the rear. We also have a right of way running through the side of our site. I'm giving this detail as no doubt if some gunshots are heard, someone will contact the local police & they will come up. I, clearly want to be squeaky clean. My thinking is that - it is perfecly leagal to shoot as: - I am, in effect, the landowner/ occupier - The general license give legal permission - Have a SGC - but should inform the local police ahead of time so that they know what is happening. Would this be correct? Any thoughts welcomed.
