  1. Yeah, that's what i was thinking. But i've heard that the hmr can be a very unpredictable round, i've shot a squirrel at 61 yds with no visible damage at all and a rabbit at 68 yds with no visible in but an inch exit wound. I only use 17g v-max.
  2. Was told by licensing department that if ever i was wanting to be stopped by uniformed officers they would know everything about me before they stopped me from car registration. I asked was a photocopy ok and they said yes, i would hate as mentioned an un-educated officer confiscating a gun from me and "slinging" it in the back of his car and banging it from pillar to post. Don't keep anything important in the car at all. Once was in a RFD shop buying pellets, the guy in front of me had just bought cartridges and had produced a SGC. Another guy came in wanting cartridges but had no SGC with him so the RFD would not sell him any, so the RFD said to the guy with SGC to buy them for him, then give them to him, which he did, no law was broken and everyone was happy.
  3. I was out recently and seen a rabbit about 50 to 60 yds away sitting in amongst a field of buttercups which were a lot higher than him / her, so to hit it i would have had to shoot through the buttercups, how far the bullet would have had to travel through the buttercups i guess would have been feet rather than inches. It was in the field "next door" not on my permission so i did not attempt to have a go at it, i had with me the .22 lr. My question is (as i am still relatively new to rimfires and always willing to learn by asking questions), although i could see the rabbit quite clearly, would the stems of the buttercups have deflected a .22 lr or a .17 hmr, or would the shot have been feasible ?
  4. A book titled Mole Catching - a practical guide by Jeff Nicholls (Amazon) is a wealth of information and well worth the £12 or so. I by the way use tunnel traps from Flatpack (with a bit of tweaking) mainly, together with a few talpax types and also a couple of no-mols type (google them) which are good if you have a run where you have trouble setting a normal trap eg single hole coming from under a stone.
  5. Recently seen a goat balancing on a ranch type fence eating a bush. Also seen a squirrel clinging to a houses pebbledash wall with a cat looking up at him.
  6. Went to Minehead for a day trip last week, a very clear day could see Aberthaw power station no problem. We watched some anglers up past the harbour ( where you can drive no more ) and the coast walk starts. Never saw any fish caught, but easy fishing only 50 yds from the car. Any fish caught from this area ?
  7. I have done a search and can't find what i am asking before anyone jumps on me. I know noise from a shotgun requires hearing protection, while a .22 moderated lr on subsonics does not. But does a .17 moderated hmr require hearing protection ? Where does the "noise" occur, near to the shooter or out in front with the sonic crack ? I know the local topography could be an influence. If practising / zeroing, I wear some hearing protecetion, but if out on a walk where only a few shots are expected over a couple of hours i wear none.
  8. Went over to a local farm to me to try out a whistle that i bought quite a while ago but never had any faith in as it basically sounded to me ****, and has been sitting on a shelf never used. After watching some you tube clips of shooters using one and bringing foxes running in i thought i had nothing to lose and give it a try. I only shoot foxes when asked to, there are no game shoots on these farms, but one had been seen a bit close for comfort to the chickens. Went to a small wood close to the chickens, started calling, the magpies and crows went mad, they were coming in like pigeon decoying on a good day. Didn't see any foxes. Moved a couple of fields away and tried again, same thing magpies and crows came from nowhere going nuts, the more i called the nuttier they went. Then one of the crows swooped down as in attack mode, didn't think at the time of seeing this, but coming to me was a last year's vixen cub creeping through the rushes, bang down she goes, put the range finder on her 34 yds. So although those whistles sound **** to me, the wildlife seem to respond to them. Now i know i was on "chicken protection duty" and the farmer was happy, because i actually "like" foxes, i always have a feeling of sadness when i shoot one. Just hope it was the right one.
  9. Harnser (post 9) Yeah i can see what you mean about stalkers being out at different times to ramblers, but that cannot be guaranteed, and as you said animal behaviour calm and browsing against running and alert should be an indicator of something else about. But i can recall (as can many), a rabbit or fox trotting happily passed you when you are going along quietly yourself, and you see photos of deer where someone has snapped them coming close. But i do agree with your point that situations like this are the exception rather than the rule, and ramblers and stalkers are usually active at different times. The point i was trying to ask was, if a shot is available and the shooter knows 100 percent that there is a safe backstop in the shape of a hill behind the quarry, but between that backstop and the quarry is a spinney say and in the spinney is a poacher shooting say squirrels quietly with an air rifle, said poacher would not be visible to shooter. So does the shooter take the shot assuming that no one is in the spinney knowing he does have a safe backstop or leave the shot just in case someone is in the spinney. I have seen many shots on you tube taken where all you can see behind the quarry is trees or bushes.
  10. I am not a deer stalker but enjoy reading and watching it in the mags and on the internet. But one thing puzzles me, how do you feel safe taking the shot ? What i mean is when i aim at a rabbit with a rimfire the backstop is good as i am shooting into the earth due to the small size of the target being close to the ground. In many situations ( especially woods it seems ), the stalker is disturbed by ramblers, dog walkers or courting couples. With the height of the deer off the ground, how can you be sure that there is no idiot in line of the exiting bullet where they should not be ? I have read on several occasions that at about the time of the shot a human strolls into view. Not trying to stir up an argument, just a question.

In the right situations their great, but personally for me used little now as rimfires seem to take over. The best i use mine for is ambushing alonside warrens in the hedges off a tripod, as it is too heavy and long ( AA s410 xtra ) to carry around on a walk.
  12. Recently i was asked by my farmer friend ( who i trap moles for as a hobby / excercise ) to trap some for a local smallholding who he is friendly with. I am not a profesional, only learnt by experience and reading books and asking questions but take 100 + per year. Anyway, goes to this place and the garden is riddled with mole runs, set 7 traps and caught 1 mole. When i was checking these traps, a mole was working away so i reset the 7 traps and then had another 3 moles, so that is 4 total from a relatively small area all tunnels interlinked. No more mole activity so far. The owner asked me to do the paddock next to the garden, first setting of 7 traps give 5 moles. So 9 moles total from 2 sets of runs. There is a funny story to this, in the paddock were 2 goats which uprooted my marker pegs and decided to eat the plastic red and white hazard warning tape i use on them ( like you see on scaffolding poles ), 7 markers with 4 x 9 inch strips on each = 7 yards of tape. But they looked ok and the owner wasn't worried. They were over the moon at the catch and told me to come and shoot the rats and squirrels whenever i wanted. Word got to the neighbours and another garden with 2 moles accounted for in 7 traps. So to my question, only once before have i had "multiple" moles from the same runs at the same time, about this time of year, so are these offspring which haven't moved out yet ?, as i think mating is over know.
  13. I'll give protrapper a thumbs up, had stuff delivered in 2 days, but as mentioned above i'm in uk. Talking to him i would not class him as a shafter, just something gone wrong in the order beyond his control. I can understand your frustration though, we've all been in a similar situation before now. I reckon it will get sorted to your satisfaction.
  14. Well my brother-in-law is thinking of buying a boat so we went to look at one in Caernarfon, left Cardiff at 7 am. Followed the sat nav to Brecon / Builth Wells / towards Machynlleth then on up to Caernarfon, the weather was glorious, the scenery was brilliant. After doing the necessary with the pending boat sale we headed over to Wrexham to drop my nephew off after being home ( he's in uni in Wrexham ), then waited for my niece to arrive by train from Liverpool ( she's in uni in Liverpool ) to take her back home with us. The 4 of us had a meal in Wetherspoons in Wrexham then we continued our journey. Down towards Oswestry / Llandridnod Wells / Builth Wells and Brecon, got back home about 9 pm. Had a really nice day out. So did you keep up, started with 3, finished with 3, but swapped a boy for a girl. You people who live up that way are so..oooooo lucky, i hope you appreciate your area, ( plenty of backstops for a cannon ). I MUST try to get up mid / north Wales more often. Finally, for those with a shoot around Oswesrty i'd go and count your pheasants, they seem to have a dying wish to cross the road, more in the verges than in the fields. We got some nice spots in south Wales, but not as nice as yours, i was envious looking around and not seeing an earthmover tearing up the " green green grass of home"
  15. Does anyone use a cluson (HL13) Super Spot Rechargeable Head-a-lite for rabbit shooting / spotting ? I'm thinking so as to free up hands. Any opinions on them ? http://clulite.cluson.co.uk/headlights/359-super-spot-rechargeable-headalite.html
  16. I can imagine how elated you are, it is a "boys toys" feeling innit. The first thing i picked up in the photo was the sling position on the barrel, like said get one on the swivels. I'm sure you have been warned or know about the dreaded richochets. I have the STYLE version of your SILHOUETTE in .22lr and .17 hmr. I am relatively new to rimfire shooting but after air rifles and shotguns it's a whole new world out there, enjoy it.
  17. Tam I can let my brother-in-law know, he is due to look at one next Saturday, if he should want any info on it i will PM you. Cheers
  18. Long long time ago, a sparrow with a "gat" pistol off my gutter, wobbled for a moment and down it came.
  19. I know it's not pheasant season, but found 20 legs in the freezer (i don't shoot them but always have some given to me). Due to those thin bones in them i always put them in the slow cooker then take the meat off the bone. However i always find a few still there when eating. What is the general feeling, use the legs or discard them ?
  20. When i've commented in slow cooker questions before, i always have said as per instructions to warm (pre-heat) the empty cooker before adding hot water then ingredients. Recently had to change our cooker as the switch came loose but was still working. Because (apart from the wobbly switch) it cooked so well, got another same make same everything, but on this one instructions says not to pre-heat while empty, cook from cold. Don't understand why the rules have changed.
  21. I zero for 40 yds with 18g AA (AA XTRA s410 - 31 to 34 ft/lbs over 30 shots for a 180 bar fill), mainly used for ambushing rabbits from warrens, where you can place yourself in a good position. To be honest since having the 2 rimfires it don't get used a lot as i find it heavy to carry and too long a length, i wish i had chosen a carbine. But i have had great results with it, and after shooting a sub 12 ft/lbs you can certainly notice the difference. Good to use if ground is rock hard. One thing i find though is pulling the bolt handle back to reload causes (me anyway) pain around the thumb area of my hand due to the effort required. Am i glad i bought it - yes, would i buy another - yes, but not this model.
  22. Thanks for the replies much appreciated. Slight change of plan now. After a lot of research by him and talks with boat owners on forums, he has decided to leave that particular one, because it kept coming up about the polish connection (not so robust apparently) and has found a 2000 year model of uk build with a suzuki engine. Hoggysreels, Yeah there are some nice Taffs about, but there are some right ******** as well. I'm a nice one. I love the banter with "foreigners", it makes for a good atmosphere and lifelong friends sometimes. Do i fish with him ? Sometimes, but he's built like the proverbial brick ****house, and can pendulum cast 100 yds plus, so he always catches more than me. As for boat fishing, i tried it 5 times and 5 times i was sick, so i give it up, but when he gets this boat i'll give it another go and see. My oldest boy can't wait, he goes sometimes down to Plymouth on the wrecks.
  23. My brother-in-law is looking at buying a raider 18 (2007 model) boat. Petrol honda 90 engine, wheelhouse version. Any body have any knowledge of these ? Cheers
