  1. As above, or off direct heat and cook a joint low and slow for 2 - 4 hours depending on size. I'd wrap in foil and add some olive oil to stop it drying out plus seasoning. Throw it on the hot grill for a few minutes at the end to crispen it up. Getting hungry just thinking about this!
  2. From what I see in NZ, the woke minority will rapidly become the majority. Wife and I are both in our forties, had a traditional education and middle of the road in terms of politics, perhaps a little to the right in my case, and a little to the left in hers. We both think the world has gone completely mad.
  3. Glad I'm not going to live forever!
  4. Snapper are great for eating. White fillets, good for fish and chips. People do swap fish for home kill or wild game meat, but it's technically illegal. That said, it happens a a lot on a small scale.
  5. Land based fishing can be great if you visit more remote areas for obvious reasons. I can catch fish of the beach where I live, but I'd have to work a lot harder for them. Also, I only do lure fishing now. I don't regard lure fishing as superior in any way to bait fishing, I just enjoy it more.
  6. Thanks. Known throughout Australia and NZ as snapper, but they are not a species of snapper at all. They are a type of sea bream, more correctly called silver sea bream. Not so different from sea bream found in Europe, but grow much bigger. A common, but highly sort after species that make great eating.
  7. We're on a family holiday in the far north of New Zealand. Couldn't resist getting up early to cast a lure off the beach on ultralight gear. First cast and...

    Germany

I keep hearing on the radio (BBC) how Germany as a "pacifist" country since WW2 is having an existential crisis re: supplying weapons to Ukraine. Germany is consistently in the top five countries of the world that exports weapons abroad. Not so pacifist when it comes to arms exports it seems. A double standard? Opinions?
  9. Non-native rats are a huge threat to native birds in NZ. I wonder what that plonker would do with them πŸ˜€

    Dentists.

Something will have to change with the NHS. I'm instinctively against going down the road of private hospitals and insurance, but it's clear that the current model isn't sustainable. If someone can come up with a solution that can be sold to the electorate, then they are smarter than I am!

    Dentists.

A serious point. The cost to the consumer of dental and veterinary services gives an idea of the real financial cost of human medicine. Those of us lucky enough to live in countries with public healthcare systems rarely appreciate the costs because we've never had to pay.

    Dentists.

A younger version of myself was driven to "do good". An older version of myself wants to do good while being rich πŸ˜ƒ

    Dentists.

I've been in the wrong game all my life (I'm a doctor!).

    MIGRANTS

On the political front, it is important to realise that some on the left don't want any borders at all and see everyone in the world as one people who can live in harmony with immigrants bringing cultural richness to their new home. Like many leftist ideals, it's a lovely idea, just not reality!
  15. Wrote a post while on a nightshift which is never a good time to express oneself, so thought better of it. Does arguing with strangers on the other side of the planet actually make anything better anyway? There's a lot of alcoholism in my extended family and even in my nuclear family (mother). Let's just say I'm not sympathetic.
  16. Nice. My old man would sell his soul for that gun and a Lee-Enfield #4!
  17. From what I've heard, it's fallen apart in the UK. We do have some family experience of this, see my earlier post in this thread.
  18. Re: shotgun certificates, I know this won't be popular, but they are outside what a GP is contracted to do. As mentioned, GP practices are private businesses contracted to the NHS. Do you expect them to do this extra work for free? If you think GBP70 is expensive, ask a lawyer to perform a similar task!
  19. That's definitely part of it I'm afraid. People bitch and moan about the care provided by the public health sector, yet fail to take responsibility for the effects that their smoking and obesity have on their health. I can assure you, we have the same issues here.
  20. Sounds pretty bad over there. My father in law was literally dying and couldn't get to see a GP. My wife and his daughter (who happens to be a GP here in NZ), pushed and pushed until he got seen, got relevant scans and treatment. He is on the mend now, but what a sorry state of affairs.
  21. There is a wedding in my future. It will be a low key, rustic affair in the countryside with a hog roast and lots of other meat, probably wild game. The invitation will say that vegetarians will have the opportunity to expand their dietary choices πŸ˜€
  22. Because of, not in spite of (!), assuming you fill yourself with carbohydrates rather than green vegetables. We get mixed health messages about eating meat from the experts and it is somewhat coloured with, and pushed by environmental concerns. Meat does increase cardiovascular and cancer risk, but in my opinion (professional and personal), if it helps you keep the weight off and avoid diabetes, a huge cardiovascular risk, and build muscle, that is a good thing. That said, I avoid processed meats as they are the worst of all worlds.
