  1. To quote the late Chris Craddock "What,s hit is history, what,s missed is a mystery." Another thing you could do is pattern your selected cartridge on a board or old fertilizer bag (remember you need the average of at least 10) and then check the penetration on an old telephone directory and if both are to your requirements stick with them, the rest will be down to your skill.Nothing beats experience.
  2. Mark, I am very happy to hear that you are law abiding,I hope everyone else takes note of mine & your comments.Because hate it as I do we have to be responsible in the use of non-lead loads, and every other contentious issue which blights our sport. Kind regards Salopian
  3. Hello M Robson & Bacchus I would be very interested to see you shoot Ducks & Mallard with 30/32 gram No 6,s.Would next week be okay? I know it is out of season, but heck why worry with legal things? in for a penny in for a pound. See you on visiting days, your old mate P.C. Plod.
  4. I would think that the ideal tool would be a sound moderated air rifle, I assume the garden is not big enough to longnet between the grazing area & the burrows, you probably do not need to build a hide.Just sit quietly & be patient after a rain shower is the best time to be there.Good luck.
  5. Try the importer first, failing that try Nigel Teague @ Teague Chokes or Chris Potter Guns for a Briley. Salopian
  6. jimdfish, Fishymikes advice was good, but if you are a novice you will only truly learn from experiences, good and bad will build your knowledge base. First you must learn how to judge range, it is amazing how many people cannot judge 20 to 30 yards (the EFFECTIVE range of a shotgun) and blaze away at 40,50,60 yards and when they have little success change their gun, pattern, hide, decoys, cartridges, infact everything and anything except themselves. The trouble with common sense is it is not very common.Buy, beg, steal, or borrow Archie Coates,s book on Pigeon Shooting, but best of all get out in the field with your binoculars.Listen & learn. 7. Sniper, Spoke to my mate about your Win 1400, he suspects the piston spring is probably weak (it is common for them to be upto 3" shorter) change about every 12 months, and keep them clean. When I mentioned cleaning about every 500 to 1000 shots he seemed to get agitated!!!!! Perhaps more frequently might please him.
  8. Red, I own a Winnie and my mate owns I believe every other one Winchester made (or so it seems) seriously he has a lot plus loads of bits.If you have a Winnie with a problem he is the saviour.
  9. Red, I have followed this topic for sometime, may I add my threepenneth? Why would anyone want to decrimp? But yes it is possible to do or alternatively fit a new magazine tube.My other observations are as follows southpaws can use R/H semi-auto,s no problem, you don,t really notice the ejected case,Remington,s are fragile,Winchesters not bad nor Brownings but I rate Beretta,s Ulrika, but I have to say in my experience all auto,s have got some real bad bits in them, still you pay your money and take your choice.
  10. Sutty, pheasants with specs on? Were they black melanistics?
  11. Just a thought, can pigeons see shot string? Whenever I shoot at a pigeon that seems a dead cert. the ****** jinks!!!!
  12. Anyone requiring springs of any type should try West Bromwich or Redditch there are numerous spring makers who will make one offs.Cheap.
  13. Sure reloading is economical for probably everything except 28g 12 gauge.A rollturnover tool can easily be made, just replicate the form of a bought shell. Ian Charlton can supply everything for homeloaders he trades as ClayGame reloaders Boston Lincs.Hodgdon Powders have useful data but beware of Yankee info they use high pressures so always use low powder weights and work up a load.Longshot powder is a goodone for .410.Most tools for low volume reloading can be homemade, but you can also buy secondhand fairly easily.Interestingly Geoff Dale (Gamebore) & Muntaz (Express) started off as homeloaders.Best of luck
  14. I could not agree more HH we carry far too much kit. With the number of pigeon shooters we have today,we are very lucky if we can fire a shot and keep the pigeons coming in and not legging it to the next county. Therefore may I suggest travel light and use fieldcraft and natural cover. One of my best days ever I had 250 cartridges, gun, penknife, cammo clothes.I sat back in the hedge, shot a couple, cut some neck props from the hedge propped them up and had a fantastic few hours.Learn from Anglers every time they buy maggots they buy floats, walk along the canal on a Sunday and see how many floats are in their tackle boxes!!!!
  15. I hope ewe are joking F.M.? Ewe are aren,t ewe? I am feeling a bit sheepish, I can baa rely cope.
  16. I am a bit slow, which horse should I bet on? where do I send my money? I fancy spending a few of my white fivers and ten shilling notes.
  17. Webber, Have a look at Arrows site, digest the info. then get down the town buy a Laser pen or pointer, adapt it to fit your barrels.Laser pens round here cost £5 then spend the difference on a 1000 cartridges
  18. The stock is probably finished with polyurethane if so you can touch it in but dent raising will require sanding back to bare wood as an afternote if anyone oil finishes a stock try Napier stock oil it is brilliant. I wish I knew what is in it?
  19. Flappers work for me, years ago I had a string operated flapper made by a guy from Rolls Royce Derby does anyone remember this type fabricated from 3/16 welding wire I would like to get another one as I lent it to a mate & it never came back
  20. The gun I believe is probably a live pigeon gun, built by Greener for that very purpose when live pigeons were shot in competition for wagers involving sometimes vast amounts of money.Greener were makers of Best quality guns.If this gun is original and in good condition it would possibly realise £1500+ at auction.
