  1. Hi fellas, As you may or may not know i am in the army and am deploying next week for 8 months abroad, and really want to get out for a great day pigeon shooting, but time is getting short to recce and watch fields etc. So i am having to resort to possibly buying a day, can anyone recommend any links in the Lincolnshire area. I would really appreciate all suggestions, but just want one last day on over the decoys before i go as a bit of "the calm before the storm" time. Cheers and take care
  2. Just out of interest do you load your own ammo, if so why the ballistic tip? I use 75gr federal classic and i can put 3 in the end of my thumb @125m. If you dont home load what brand ammo have you matched to ya rifle?
  3. I have shot and butchered muntjac, and they are a nightmare to skin, but easily butchered. Lovely eating too, but as with all venison you must cook it slow, as it is so lean it will dry out quickly. The two you have shot do not look that old, two years maybe three judging by antler and canine length. But bear in mind that these deer can be dangerous and are known to have a go at you, and will do you a hell of a damage with those antlers. Good shooting never the less and enjoy your feed!!! :o
  4. because when lamping rabbits they will sit still for a considerable longer length of time, deer, especially roe and munjac are particularly flighty and due to their reduced sense of sight rely more on sense of smell and hearing. To that end they try to look more. Also when you are sat at your pc just move your head as if there was a piont of aim in one spot, then do the same for a point of aim for the base of the neck (were the spinal column is widest) and again for the heart/lung. At the end of the day no-one wants to leave an injured beast, so to minimise the risk is the best practice. do i really need to go on.......dont answer that ya sarky **** If you dont hit the neck full on in the middle and only get the jugular, that deer can run on for miles, before it drops dead. So, your neck shoot that you do sometimes, has a risk too sir. Frank. But as you say you are confident with your rifle and if you cannot put a bullet in one inch @ 100m then you should get more time on the range.
  5. My point is that it is poor practice and there are loads of reasons why. People will do it whether it is your job or not, and whether it is your job or not you do not know when that beast is going to move its head. Yes every beast i have shot has dropped on the spot, or within a five metre radius, from neck shot muntjac to heart/lung shot sika.....head shot too much risk of wounding.
  6. Do i really need to state the obvious about why head shots should not be used!! Shocked is such an understatement - Slight gust of wind - Debris in the bore sight invisible to the scope - Poor breathing practice during shot release - Beast moving its head during shot release - Very small room for error for clean kill ( very easy to leave a wounded beast roaming ) ........to name a few!!! Laws of averages gentlemen thats why........its not the done thing! At the end of the day you will all learn when it does go wrong, and you are all grown ups and people will still do it as you say but it does not make it right though does it.
  7. Pin, The reason i have all the kit is from before i hjoined the Army, i used to live in the scottish borders and i had it all on my doorstep, Stalking, Salmon/Sea-Trout, Pigeons, Grouse, phesants, vermin etc, and went very regularly, but since i joined up and moved to a fresh area, i aint even been able to get my foot in the door. Having said that i think i am off away soon for a while and my kit wont be used, but on my return......I WILL GET SORTED!!! Thanks for all comments and all the best to all Cheers Heppy
  8. I trust you dont shoot deer in the head regularly then?
  9. Having spent most of the weekend knocking on doors and asking farmers if i can help them by offering to cure rabbit problems, pigeon problems or other crop damaging game/vermin, and being spoken to like some piece of cr**, it seems to me that the farmers around this area are so narrow minded and blinkered that it calls to question their intelligence. Having had such a negative response to efforts, it even calls to question wether it is worth having all this money tied up in my equipment/accessories and never to be used. I will be interested to hear anyone opinions on this, and wether i am just bitter. Please do not let this tarnish anyone elses efforts in following the sport, and by no means do i intend to generalise about the farming freternity as a whole. Take care and happy hunting, i will let you all know if i decide to have a sale!!!!
  10. You using fire formed cases?, or is it new brass? You been loading for long?
  11. This made me laugh my a** off mate. But the misses was asking where you got the action men came from, 'cos she was after making a voodoo doll of me!!!! Well done buddy very funny
  12. I have noticed in my area that birds are only following rape in the mornings until about 1000hrs, i dont know why this is, possibly due to it still being mild.
  13. A quick post to wish all a very happy new year, and lets hope the new year brings LOADS of quality, safe shooting. The best of luck to all
  14. Without appearing to sound like a complete dope, what is the general concensus on where to place the magnet? a. In the killing area, in the middle of the 'horse shoe'? b. At the head of the pattern in the line of the decoys? c. At the tail of one of the legs of the horse shoe? You get the idea of the question. I have been told to put it in the line of the birds at the head, but does anyone have any conflicting direction? Cheers all Heppy
  15. Kipper, Obviously i was refering to comments on the batteries not lasting very long in the field. Come on mate read up on the matter prior to making comment there's a good little fish!!!!!!!
