  3. Once the sadness passes, you will remember, smile and share a joke or two. The pain has gone and there is only peace now. Allan
  4. Yesterday I dyed the net did not come out a bad colour either. Today I lined the net and put it on endpins. Here are a few pics explaining how to line the net. First off get your measured lines out. and lay your net out ready. Next attache your lines to the line threaded through the selvage of the net. The net with the lines ready to be threaded. Next thread your lines through the bunched up net. Then tie in your second end pin and spread the net out over the lines. I then put the net up on a few pegs as it makes it easier to pick up on the end pins. It was about this time that my fingers stopped working because of the strong bitterly cold Easterly wind. I could not work the camera, when I had picked the net up and got back to the car, I could not open the door my fingers were so numb. So from this. To this, about 3 weeks Well worth the effort TC
  5. malkiserow A poke net is essentially a large purse net typically over 5ft long. It is usually 18 to 20 meshes deep and has a draw cord run around it exactly like a purse net, however, unlike a purse net it has two pegs. it can be used on sticks to cover hedge top runs or used to cover holes where multiple tubes emerge making it a very versatile net to have in your bag. The bagging referred to in the post is essentially the amount of slack netting that is in a net. the net is actually 100 yds in length by cutting the working length down to 50 yds you then have a net that is able to tangle rabbits in it's meshes. Purse nets and long nets do not work on the same principle. With long nets the rabbit is allowed to tangle in the meshes. With nets that have draw strings the rabbits is pursed by the momentum of it hitting the net. TC
  6. I have shot Woodcock for 35 years plus now, no matter how I try them, I just do not like them. I wish I did because unless I have some one that is going to eat them I do not shoot them. I have one mate that loves them and he will take a brace or more usually a single bird off me now and again. But to me I think you would have to go a long way to beat a roast Teal followed very closly by Grouse. TC
  7. Suzy, I had the very same problem with a lurcher I had spayed. When she came into season after being spayed I complained to the vet. He told me that even if a piece of her uteris the size of a pin head is left inside her she can still come into season, and stand for a dog. Well that part was true as she stood for my terrier. The problem was the vet would not accept liability, however, he did offer to do the operation again but did warn that it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack and could not gaurentee the the op would be a success. As I could not afford to sue him the b@st@rd got away with it. TC
  8. Probably about between 60 and 70 hrs total knitting time. If I knitted fast I could do a yard in under an hour. But what I tended to do was do a bit, put it down. I started it 3 weeks ago tomorrow. Last Sunday I had about 5 hrs work left on it and it has taken me since then to do it. I blame the Man Flue I am making a few 5ft poke nets now and teaching my granddaughter how to knit nets. I am sure it will come in handy for her . Once I have her going on her own I will start my next long net. TC
  9. Well after a bout of the dibilatating man flue this week, today I finaly got my bum in gear and finished the net. All that is left to do is dye the net and add the running lines. I am hoping to give it it's first try on Sunday, with the help of the weatherman. I am well pleased with the net it is light, weighs in @ 1.55kilos for a 50 yd net with 100% bagging and is very soft to the touch, what it will be like when it is working only time will tell. More pictures to follow once I have it dyed, dried and lined. I will set it up to see how it looks. TC

  11. Mine will be 13 meshes wide including the two half mesh selvage meshes and 4.25" mesh. The total weight of the finished net will be approx 1.4 kilos. TC
  12. After seeing a double strand hand made net on another forum I just had to have one. The problem was finding the twine to make it; I eventually tracked down some 100% polyester twine and at a reasonable price. For the double stranded net the diameter of the twine is ideal another plus factor is that no matter how hard i pull I have not been able to snap it. The main drawback was the fact that it was 100% polyester and white. So it had to be died. Finding a dye that would take on 100% polyester was quite difficult. Most of the polyester sold as net making twine is actually a poly cotton mix and will take dyes quite readily, because of the cotton content of the yarn. After many hours doing research I finally found a firm that sold dyes that will colour 100% polyester. However you will never get the true colour of the dye just a shade of it. The reason for that is that you need a temperature of 139c to open up the fibres of the yarn so that the dye can take, The problem is boiling point is only 100c so whilst the fibres will open to a certain extent they will not open fully and allow the dye into the core of the yarn. In this first picture you can see that while the netting is green, it is only a pale representation of what it should be. However, that said I think it will be fine for the purpose that it is wanted for. So last Friday I drove down to buy the twine, once I got home I could not wait to start knitting my first ever long net. Never having knitted a long net before the prospect was rather daunting, I was not sure how long it would take, after I had done the first 10 yards of net I thought it would take me about 3 weeks to a month. What I did not take into account was the fact that I would pick up speed the more of the net that I done. So much so that 8 days later I have reached the halfway point. 25 yds of rigged net or 50 yds of stretched net. Of course I still have the selvage meshes to sew in even when I get to the 100yds. Then there’s the dying and drying of the net, it all takes extra time. One thing I will say if you can knit a purse net you can certainly knit a long net. Give it a go, you will get a superior net for your troubles. Here are a couple of pics of the net so far. TC
  13. Well done Josh, I think that for the first time ever I agree with LV. You will never have a better time TC

  15. During hard weather Woodcock revert from night time feeding to daytime feeding. The reason being that the fields are frozen so they cannot probe with their beaks for food. During hard spells when the ground is frozen if you want to find woodcock look for places where the ground is not frozen. IE; valley bottoms where the undergrowth is dense. Rhoderdendoron bushes, Gorse, Holly bushes and along the edges of pine woods are all good places to look. The reason being that the ground is protected by the evergreen canopy that these provide, so the Woodcock can feed in the unfrozen soil. When you find an area like this you will often find a concentration of Woodcock in a very close proximaty. Last year I rose 14 Woodcock out of a very small area. I did make a post about it last year but it seems the search engine does not go back that far. TC
  16. They have the town I come from; they even have photos of me. They even have my ISP# and they can trace my address from that. If they were that concerned they would have done something by now. I would suggest that you that people who blank off faces do not have the courage of their convictions. Stand up and be counted. Or do not post pictures. Every time an anti sees a picture blanked off, they think they have won a victory, and in all truth they have! They have got a person partaking a perfectly legal sport, frightened to be associated with it. Their constant subterfuge, leads to the feeling of condemnation by association. That is why you have blanked out the face in the photo. They are slowly eroding the pride that was once felt by every one who hunted, shot or fished. Even anglers are distancing themselves from other country sports because of the condemnation by association. Unless we all pull together there will be no need for me to teach my grandchildren how to hunt because there will be no hunting. This is not my opinion but facts. TC
  17. This I do not understand, the blanking off of faces. IF you feel fine with posting on an Internet forum, then why post a photo only to blank off the face. IMHO that is a complete waste of time. What are the obvious reasons that caused you to blank off the face? I have been posting on various forums for the last 6 years without a blanked off face and have suffered no repercussions, bar the obvious ones of how ugly I am. I am of the opinion that too much of the face blanking goes on. Be proud of your chosen sport and have the fortitude to stand up for it not hide behind a blob. If you feel that you need to blank a face out to protect whoever is in the photo then don't post it. It is really that simple. By giving in to the possibility of repercussions and blanking out a face. The anti's are winning, how long before you will stop posting photos at all? I am a member of a forum at the moment where a prerequisite for becoming a full member is that you have a photo of yourself as an avatar, a good thing IMO stand up and be counted do not give in to bullying. Just my opinion. TC
  18. Too true it's not right.
  19. If the pups were a month old they would not have been weaned yet, so they could not have been bought as xmas presents.
  20. You sir are a first class ****. "There but for the grace of God go I". Just remember that. TC
  21. I think you had better go into hiding young lad. A cock pheasant and an air rifle in the same photo will get some peoples blood boiling.

    Not Received

There are a couple of things you can do. IF you paid by creditcard with paypal you can do a chargeback on your CC account. If you paid with a paypal balance you can do an item not received claim, they will then freeze his account untill he pays the monies back.
  23. Urban legend it may be, but the sentiment is spot on.
