  1. An interesting read, thank you. One thing that struck me yesterday whilst looking at the clay and game site, was the recommendation that when loading tungsten super shot you should always use the fullest length case applicable to the chamber of the gun, or risk damaging the barrel. So if you have a gun proofed for 3" and 2 3/4" you should always use a 3" case. I had not considered that. Probably not a problem for most side by sides.
  2. Agreed. It is an expert's gun rather than a gun to introduce children to shooting.
  3. Looking at the book that would be the third year of production, 1924.
  4. Or from a failed shot cup? Fire enough shells and eventually you will have a shell that doesn't function perfectly.
  5. Hello Rob, I have a mossberg hushpower pump and a winchester 9410 lever action. I got them for the winchester for a bit of fun really.
  6. This is a really interesting thread. Some time ago I tried magtech cases, large rifle primers and lilgun for propellant. I couldn't get enough compression to hold the charge in the case for a proper burn. Sometimes the primer would blow the charge including mostly unburned powder out. I shall try and get some .45 black powder wads then.
  7. What fantastic ground to walk over. You simply can't beat a side by side for that.
  8. A long shot, but if you know of anyone selling a front end loader for one of these, I've been after one for a while.
  9. I follow the auctions a lot and can really see the market falling out on the mid to lower end. The really desirable items are maintaining prices, although relative to original costs they still bargains. Always remember to factor in the auctioneer's fees and the VAT payable on those fees. Bonhams realised prices include these, but the hammer prices you see won't. Sadly Holts have stopped giving access to realised prices after receiving pressure from the trade.
  10. Sounds like you're after a Beretta silver hawk or a Winchester Model 23.
  11. You will love the Mossberg .410. They are very useful tools and you will be surprised how effective it can be. I've tried lots of shells from 2" 9 gram to 3" 18g (I think). I mostly use the 2.5" Lyvale Express 14g now.
  12. I love a Churchill rib. Whether the claim that they make a short barrelled gun look like it has a longer sighting plane is true I'm not sure, but I certainly shoot well with one.
  13. Ha ha ha!! Brilliant. I had to check in a fishing rod 2 years ago after a 4 piece travel rod was deemed too dangerous to carry on. Quite what threat it posed I never worked out. I do hate you Ryanair.
  14. I have a box full of these things - I have found the most useful the Leatherman juice. Its small enough to be in a pocket all the time and has just enough to be useful. If I need a proper set of pliers, a saw or a serious wire cutter then I go to the tool box. Its a beast of a tool!
  15. I have just sold mine at auction (originally purchased from a gentleman on here). Mine was a Gunmark, but look identical. 32", wide top rib, fully choked. They are a heavily built 10 bore, but even so, launching 8 bore loads though a 10lb gun I found the recoil very heavy. An original 8 bore double would be what, 11 to 14 pounds? If you really want to try an 8 but can't afford an original (like me) then they are a good way to go.
  16. They look awesome and will forever be one of the most iconic shotguns ever made. It just seemed a very quirky to me to have a cross bolt safety (i think) and another quick safety inside the trigger guard. I've only used one once.
  17. I disagree. They weren't even any better than an 870 as a military use firearm. Two safety catches is one too many for a soldier to think about!
  18. OP - It sounds from your description that the individual was behaving a bit "Billy big balls". Sometimes even otherwise responsible people can act like a ****.
  19. A great photo - one round expended! I've tried a 470, the recoil was stout! Have you ever fired it prone?!
  20. That's why the .375 is king I guess. If I really needed my own stopping rifle (in my dreams!!) I would look at a .458 Lott so I could shoot factory .458 win mag.
  21. I use a Musto, it looks smart. All the tweed jackets sold today rely on a waterproof drop liner. I don't think you can find the really heavy stuff anymore.
  22. Especially with the flash tip, frag, incendiary! Turns a car into a ball of fire within a few shots. Great stuff.
  23. Very interesting. I have a .375 H&H and a .45-70 Marlin 1895 (the SBL version). I stick to my .308 for deer in the UK though. You're right about the .45-70, in my Marlin the heavy loads are very lively indeed! I've mentioned it before, but if I were to choose anything and ignoring all other factors such as availability etc. I think the .358 Winchester, (a necked up .308) would be excellent on deer. A great big bullet travelling at moderate velocity. Lots of other, older cartridges can duplicate the ballistics, but I just think its a neat cartridge and suspect it would be ideal for everything from small deer to driven boar.
