  1. Very sad anytime of the year, my thoughts are with his friends and family. Blackpowder
  2. WR Pape of Newcastle were known as , "The Purdey of the North". It appears as if their guns were built from scratch in Newcastle to a very high standard. Blackpowder
  3. I read that advice about storing shotguns muzzle down years ago, I cant even remember which book or magazine it was in now. The reasons given were as hookbones has said, damage to wooden stocks. Most gun owners are probably over enthusiastic with gun oil, spray cans are in my mind one of the worst culprits in aiding and abetting over oiling. Despite trying not to that drop of oil on the ejectors becomes a flood at the touch of a button. Even when storing muzzle down I always wipe as much oil as possible from the action and barrel flats leaving only a thin protective film before putting the gun in storage. Blackpowder
  4. Out of the slip and muzzle down if possible this allows any excess oil to run to the muzzle end instead of soaking into the wooden stock. Blackpowder
  5. Butchers boiled ham with a touch of mustard in a harvester roll. Bliss! Blackpowder
  6. Had some pretty decent shooting for pigeon in real pigeon country a few years ago until some so called,"guide" came along and offered the farm manager £15 per gun per dasy for his clients as long as no one else was allowed on the place. A pity because it was a non game shooting place and copuld be shot freely throughout the game shooting season. Blackpowder
  7. Just read this before I am out the door. If it ias a new sealed system sludge should not be a problem. Try this switch of system so pump is stopped:- Shut down RH radiator valve then let lots of water bleed through the air valve Shut down LH and ditto. Perhaps you have had this reply already but had not time to read all posts. Blackpowder
  8. Think yourself lucky you only have one. Blackpowder
  9. Fantastic bit of kit you have there, years and years of use there with a little common sense TLC. Blackpowder
  10. Good luck to you and all the best for future happiness. Blackpowder
  11. Fishermans Friend thay sure warm to the soles of the boots. Blackpowder
  12. That is more than tragic going to help someone in difficulty and losing your own life through attempting. My thoughts are with his family and also especially his two climbing mates. Blackpowder
  13. I have actually seen roe deer feeding from a spiral feeder, badgers I think pull them straight and let large amounts of grain pour out. Occasionally we have a feeder tipped on its side obviously by roe deer. This season we changed a lot of spirals for rigid tubes which do not seem so prone to be exploited by either of the above. 14. Internet news sites are saying that a Facebook page has been opened for people to show their sympathy and regards for the deceased? :( The gang must have totalled 6 as 4 have been arrested and 2 are dead. Blackpowder
  15. First time for me away back in the early sixties, bought a Ford Anglia, the very oldest type in May, had various newly passed mates sit with me while we toured the weekend fleshpots and dancehalls of the Border Country. My lucky star sure was shining on test day. Balckpowder
  16. Not being a passport holder where does this leave me? Even crossing to Orkney on the ferry ID was required this year, for them a bus pass was acceptable. Another question, is it the case of when on internal flights in Great Britain you are required to provide a passport as proof of ID. Coming soon in Scotland is a multi purpose card which will be among other things , bus pass and library ticket and photo ID. Blackpowder
  17. We had this discussion at our Club shoot last Saturday. With two fox coloured spaniels in the line the risk of a shot at charlie was not worth taking, whereas the previous rule had been no ground game but shoot a fox if safe to do so, now by consensus of opinion on the day seems to suggest that no foxes now either. Down to a time and a place. Blackpowder
  18. Has the look of a quality gun. blackpowder
  19. Most people in my syndicate and club, the latter both pigeon and pheasant seem to be using 2 1/2 inch cartridges. As a side by side toff I find the humble clear pigeon in felt wad 6's, bulk purchased by the above club ,are totally adaquate in the field for pigeon and pheasant. The gun or the cartridge are seldom the reason for a missed bird. Blackpowder Further to the above, I have a friend who was picking up behind the Percy brothers at a Border shoot, very high birds I am told. This picker up was amazed at the height these bgrothers were killing pheasants at and had a crafty look at the cartridge pile when he had finished picking up. Bog standerd 2 1/2 was his comment.
  20. If beating for Continental Guns and the cry WOODCOCK , is heard dive flat on the ground and stay there until shooting stops. Blackpowder
  21. The stuff can be a menace when it gets out of hand, excellent cover and shelter for pheasants I agree. Involvment in a shoot for over 40 years which sports an area of rhodys we have found it proves very difficult to cut rides and paths through the intertwined branches, and removal of cut branches is far from easy in these jungles. So great if kept in line , but an impenetrable jungle which is impossible to beat through when allowed to go wild. Blackpowder
  22. Safe enough if you are a hoodie Blackpowder
  23. It appears as if shooting now has a new supporter after the attendance of Mandy Mandleson at a shoot held at Waddeson Manor home of Jacob Rothschild of the banking dynasty. Other guests included the wicked witch formerly of 10 Downing Street and the son of Libyan dictator Gaddafi. It is not recorded if the first two mentioned picked up a gun but apparently the last is a very keen shot. I can think of a number of Shoots where some of that party would definately be on the quarry list. Various? Blackpowder
