  1. WALKED OFF - is a term used when you walk towards the feeding flock in order to scare them off the field and to see in which direction they go and if and how long before they begin to return. WALKED OFF = TO SCARE AWAY/FRIGHTEN OFF/SHOO AWAY. also.. walked off is something you do if you go on a blind(not a hide)date and don't like the look of the person you are about to meet! Pete.
  2. Hey Gemini you old scrote! No seriously I have not the faintest clue just who is hiding behind 'Gemini' Cheers, Pete.
  3. nppc loyalty? Hi there, Trying to define loyalty in this case? In my mind if I renew my membership I'm loyal. I would like to offer the following guidelines for any new, not so new and/or prospective members, why even you still thinking about it! Having paid my membership fee I then have to decide for myself, or accept third party advice on where, from what land is available, I might go for hopefully an opportunity to shoot pigeons. On the day out I may be offered, by the farmer, an alternative field to shoot over, a neighbouring farmer might approach me at some point to shoot for him, a landowner? gamekeeper? might challenge my right? to be on the land, or someone else might be there? and it's up to me how I deal with that. It can sometimes be easy to get in the wrong place and I try to do some careful reccy beforehand if I hav'nt been to that area previously. Of course I might meet some local mouthpiece knowall I've been shooting here for years and got two thousand farms of my own blah de blah, so what, I just get on with some decoying or have a look about, or go home, I am not commited. Nothing is ever perfect when it comes to pigeoning. I had booked-out for last Saturday and although I knew the weather forecast it seemed ten times worse in the dark at 6.00am and it would not have been difficult to go back to bed! On the land it was far too windy for any electric toys, even floaters blew away but my shell decoys ( 40 odd) were securely fastened down and that took time but it paid off!! To sum up, this is what I get from NPPC for my LOYALTY Lists of places to go. Liability Insurance cover. The opportunity to shoot pigeons. All for the price of two tankfulls of diesel. But don't take my word - phone JOHN SHOOTER on 08707572246. Cheers, Pete Tip for members : Once you've booked a place, phone the night before (9.45pm-ish) find out from John what else is available in the area - you might get options!
  4. TO PETE EVANS. If the cap fits.......
  5. TO MILLOMITE. No - the wings don't come out. But its best if, before you launch it just set the wings out slightly and when it arrows down they appear to tuck in just like the real thing!!
  6. Have you ever sat in your hide in winter on a rape field employing all manner of decoy tackle which is either whirling round or flapping, only to see one pigeon arrow down like a stuka into the crop completely ignoring your ploy and way out of range? Remember that old guy - Archie summat or other - he advocated throwing out a dead pigeon from the hide in an attempt to draw the attention of passing pigeons. Well guys, I've been experimenting with his 'technique' and, believe it not, there is some mileage in it. However an additional component was required, I fashioned a large strong catapult from a forked piece of hazel with a span of approx 24cm / depth of fork approx 30cm, handle to suit and using a strip of tractor innertube approx 3cm X 460cm. Test firing a dead pigeon ('percy') in the back garden proved useful as a few adjustments were needed but once I had made these I was confident of both a pretty straight trajectory and consistant range - approx 25 metres from 65 degrees. Once out in the field it works perfectly, I can fire a 'percy' right out among the decoys just as if it is landing, it really looks authentic. The dog also plays a main part in things by retreiving 'percy' so to speak thus enabling it's ('percy') continued use. I am not sure as yet just how much mileage there will be in one 'percy', but obviously I will confirm this when tests have finally been completed. The first test came, for my new 'percypult', when out on the rape between Xmas and New Year, from my hide, for real. Wow, it sure brings in the pigeons and once I became proficient at judging the time span from seeing passing pigeons to launching 'percy' to picking up gun and shooting, I was able to make a respectable bag of pigeons. The main benefit of a 'percypult' is clearly there for everyone to see, you can leave your battery powered gizmo's in the garage, just take a handfull of shell deeks, at least two 'percys', a bumstick (just in case) and instantly you have reduced your equipment weight by at least seventy five percent! GREAT NEWS: Make your own 'percypult' I've given you the rough dimensions above and for those of you who are not creatively gifted you don't have to take out a mortgage to get a 'percypult', the large 'bait launcher' (catapult) is avaiable from most US angling catalogues for about $2.50 + carriage.
  7. Do you think the government will ban cockle-picking if enough insurgents drown?
  8. Yes, your perfectly right Vermin Dropper!
  9. Sorry, I will just qualify that statement. I refer specifically to pigeon shooting and if the person offering the service is unable to attend a call out for two or three days, then its not a service, and worse, some other budding Archie Coates will have nipped in there using the same technique.
  10. Of course I don't mean turn up unannounced at the farmhouse door deek bag in hand with shot gun slip over your shoulder, have your equipment and gun stored descretly (should be anyway) in your vehicle - just in case you get the nod. And for sure, one man cannot offer a pest control service. But one man can find a good days pigeon or rabbit shooting.
  11. It's fine having 'business' cards, but unless it really is your business how can you offer a service. The first time (unless you are a real jammy dodger) Mr.Farmer calls you will not be able to attend, so where does that leave your service? This is how the so-called guides and clubs exist! They offer a true service using their clients and/or members!! So guys unless it's proper regular rough shooting (for cash) you are seeking, just go on the knocker on your day off, but only knock where the birds are feeding and make sure your all your equipment and shot gun is with you because you will look a right old chump when Mr. Farmer says "sure thing get out there and shoot some of the beggers now". Don't worry about getting 'one foot in the door' if you shoot a pile of pigeons the farmer will remember you and the next time you go there a knocking pigeon shooying will simply be a formality. That said, be prepared some days for a lot of knocking not least because some arsen wipen has been there before you maybe left a bottle of cheap hard stuff and pheasant feathers in the hedge bottom along with empty cases and his old magnit battery!!! HEY NOBODYS' PERFECT... BUT THE DAY TO SHOOT PIGEONS IS THE DAY THEY WANT TO BE ON THAT FIELD.
  12. Hey Will, ...and they say the camera never lies...I wonder where he buys his baccy from..... no, no don't answer that, things may start to snowball!! Cheers.
  13. Don't shoot them when they are eating acorns and the like, its not sporting, there are many young ones so just let them fatten up and you will get more sport in late winter and next spring!
  14. Hey guys, do any of you know where the pigeons are feeding at the present?
  15. Hey Jim, You should converse with pee-jay, seemingly he has no problem getting land in Derbyshire, check his recent posts! Cheerio, Pete.
  16. Peter, Try Big Jim on 01767 312152 or 07860 919909 !!

  20. Kill a white corvid......and bad luck will surely follow thee to the end of thine days!
  21. Invest in a cheapo rotary and use it to your advantage(apologies to pinewood) Swathed rape and rape stubble - build your hide in a suitable place and set out a smattering of shell deeks, maybe a bumstick or two (later on you might have to to juggle these about or bring them in when things get going) then as far away as poss but still in the same field take out your rotary, switch it on then go back to your hide and conventional deeks, and the birds will come nicely to yo from 'tother side of the field! Rotarys - very effect bird scarers!! Next month I will tell you how to use rotarys effectively on autumn drillings, and why there are times when more than one rotary should be employed.
  22. Dazza, What a pity you did'nt see the ones advertised in the classifieds of the July of Sporting Shooter magazine only £44.00 with a carrying bag and including P+P !!
  23. Hey Deako, There is no need to be rude to Hammergun, I mean if you got some choke in your gun 28gr/8's should work fine, IF you know where to point your barrells! I am begining to think you have'nt got as much shooting experience as you say!
