  1. Argh I'm not looking at other breeds I've already said I have a labrador, and that I just asked out of interest! Lol
  2. Agree with above - my black lab sits and stays in my chicken pen whilst I faff about in there. So funny, he knows he's not allowed to chase them so he looks at everything else except the chickens whilst he's in there. You'll find this invaluable practice if you're going to use him in a pheasant shooting capacity. Good luck - its easier than u think!
  3. Jmart please could you explain to me the abbreviations in your post and what they stand for? (Told you I was a rank amateur!!)Many thanks.
  4. That's interesting.pontbeck, I was only asking out of interest, as we already have a labrador and a cocker!
  5. (Talking both beating dogs and peg dogs here).
  6. Ok so we have the quintessentiall (sp?!) Labs and spaniels as gundogs but being a rank amateur and not sure what other dogs such as pointers do in a rough shooting context - what other choices as regards breeds do we have? Has anyone had great results with a breed trhat you wouldn't associate with 'gundogism'? Has anyone an obscure breed that we (ok, people like me specifically!) May not know about? Please share. Aplogies for caps and terrible punctuation I'm on my phone! Cheers,
  7. Stilts?! Or can you get a waterproof coat that goes under the belly as well I wonder?
  8. Well after a year as a gun and shoot widow I'm having a go at joining the ranks. Already know a few people on here, looking forward to reading the topics, especially the dog training ones and asking questions... lots of questions!
  9. We have a whippet x jr. He's a super obedient dog. He was meant for ratting but he doesn't have it in him bless him - too gentle. As for a bushing dog I'm not sure as he has a thin coat and is a right wimp although I'm sure if you got a cross with more terrier characteristics than whippet such as a thicker more wiry coat and more tendency to 'hunt' (than mine does, anyway!) you might be in with a chance.,,
