  1. Hi I have in my time had 3 narrowboats in the Northampton area, Braunston is recognised as being the crossroads of the canal system, from there you can travel anywhere you please, down to London if you are feeling brave leading onto the tidal Thames. The Coventry canal is not too arduous with just a few locks and miles of beautiful open countryside, beware the Bingley flight of locks they will take your breath away this is a vast feat of engineering, and will take half a day to navigate, then you have to return down them as a week will not allow you to do a ring unless you are a crew of fit lads? The Oxford canal will take you through a few more locks and interesting swing bridges, I would advise you to buy a copy of the Nicholsons guide to cover your chosen route, it will give you details of your proposed holiday including mileages, bridge numbers for positioning, shops and villages you will pass through, together with an idea of how many locks before you reach the pub!! Feel free to pm me if you have any specific questions, be glad to help, have a good holiday. Rgds Rob.
  2. Morning lads, told today that we have had 11" of rain in November compared with the normal 7", no wonder my legs ache from carrying everything around instead of using the Landy lol. Anyone found that these spiral spring feeders let out too much grain? I have inserted a 6" x 1"dia bit of stick into the bore of the spring, this has reduced the "flow" the birds still get the grain by pecking as normal, but it just takes that bit longer and prevents too much pouring out at one hit. Cheers Rob.
  3. All I can say is that you have either been very unfortunate or have not been to many Caravan Club sites, in 30 yrs of holidaying in both Motorhomes and Caravans I can remember only two such wardens, with "attitude", as I said they just need a gentle reminder as to who they are actually working for. There are very many excellent privately managed sites but the standard of Caravan Club sites is the same wherever you stay, its not a case of pot luck as to whether its a good site or not. They also work out on average to be cheaper than commercial sites I have found. Rgds D2D
  4. Caravan club sites are without doubt the cleanest, safest, (especially for kids), places to stay. The wardens are on site to not only help members and service the site facilities but to maintain the peace and quiet we all enjoy, dogs are welcome and have a separate exercise area. The pitches are laid out to ensure that everyone has ample space around them, the art is in choosing a pitch away from trees, so that the awning faces south , with the evening sun, if any lol,is on the lounge area of the caravan. It is true that there are a few, and only a few, wardens (usually temps covering regular wardens holidays) that take the job too seriously, my approach is to gently remind them that I am the member and it is my club he works for. After reflection they usually see where I am coming from. Happy Caravanning. D2D.
  5. To avoid confusion, this battery belongs to me, but is to be collected from Evenswood, Bishop Auckland. I bought it together with a Lightforce lamp, the lamp is being posted, but it is uneconomical to post the battery, therefore I am offering a 20amp 12v battery to the first person who paypals me a nominal Tenner which offsets the postage of the lamp. A bargain I think and perfect for a Pigeon rotary, only downside is that the lady works shifts and the buyer would have to call at a time convenient to her. PM please if you are able to collect from that area. Rgds D2D. BATTERY COLLECTED THANKS.
  6. Chaps I have available for collection in Bishops Auckland a 20amp 12v battery, I bought it with a lamp on the bay but its too heavy to post. I,m asking just a Tenner for it (via paypal) this will offset the postage of the lamp to me. Ideal for a Pigeon Rotary, pm me for further details, but be quick as its on other forums. Cheers D2D.
  7. The caravan club have a large network of member owned sites throughout the uk and many more are affiliated abroad, they charge an average £15 for 2 adults, van, car and awning and that includes unlimited electricity, most sites have a 5 star shower block. Anyone who is serious about Caravanning should look into the benefits, especially if going abroad. Rgds D2D
  8. Hi have a look on the Caravan Club website they have all the info you need, well worth joining either them or Camping and Caravan club GB. You dont put your age on your profile but that plays a part these days regarding what you can tow. I have been caravanning for years now and we have really enjoyed our holidays and long weekends away for comparatively little money, once you have bought all the bits and bobs. Then theres the added joy of holding up all the traffic on a Friday afternoon We also had a Camper, Swift Kontiki, until we got the caravan, we got rid of it because we were fed up with having to spend most of the visit to towns looking for suitable parking to take a long vehicle and so many carparks had height restrictions, they are not as free and easy as you think, nowadays we park the caravan on site put up the awning and off down the local. If you want to do that with a Camper you have to pack everything away before you can leave, unless you fancy getting on your bike! Rgds D2D.
  9. Hi MFS I have a reduntant 5 shot metal mag, will pm you. Rgds D2D

Hi unless i have missed it you have not put your location, sometimes you strike lucky and what you want is on your doorstep, fill out as much of your profile as possible Rgds D2D. aHH just looked at your previous posts and see you are miles away, so sorry cant help you.
  12. The 2nd finest milk there is for growing pups, find someone with goats they usually have more milk than they know what to do with and have it already frozen, buy up all you can store and you wont go far wrong, pups on goats milk grow before your very eyes lol. Rgds D2D
  13. A method I have used many times with a problem dog is to walk the dog on a lead up a quiet lane with high banks or a field with a solid hedge, the dog walks as normal on your left with its nose just level with your knee, the lead is in your left hand, in your right hand you carry a swishy thin wand devoid of leaves etc, except for a few on the very end, a "swisher," the idea is not to touch the dog at all but to move the swisher up and down gently in time with your walking speed. the dog will have to put its nose into the swishing leaves or stay at heel, should it move forward and make contact with the stick a firm "NO"is given but lots of praise every 20yds or so, after a few sessions the dog will not seek to move ahead and will be content to stay by your knee, within a week it will not need to be on a lead, very soon the swisher is dispensed with and the dog, unless it is stupid, will have the lesson learnt. You can progress to what I call "square bashing" walking the dog, again with a swisher in 10yd squares, first one way, then the other start the lesson on the lead and finish off the lead, always finish the lesson on a successfull note with bags of praise, put the dog back in its kennel happy. As with any training session if things dont go right, switch to something the dog can do, give it lots of praise and call it a day. Hope this helps in some way, Rgds D2D.
  14. It really is a shame when offers like this come along, I do a fair bit of shooting but would sometimes like to have a change of scenery, what has gone so wrong that the shooting cannot be offered again, possibly with a no pm,s ruling, then the "neandertals" as you call them would have to go public? We could all then see who the twerps are and what they are up to, are they genuine members even? Should we all miss out just through the attitudes of a minority, it would be nice to think we are not all tarred with the same brush. Rgds D2D
  15. Im about 10 miles away and yes we have it here quite badly, just have to wait for a couple of hard frosts, then hey ho off we go again In some areas the bunnies seem to have develped an immunity to it, but sadly not where we are, it has to rank as one of mans cruellest interventions but at the time I suppose the situation was getting out of hand. In the early 60,s I went out as a lad after school with a webley mk3 and shot so many that we didnt have enough holes to put them in out of the way. Rgds D2D
  16. I use a Bushnell Yardage Pro,dead easy to use, no whistles or bells just a straight forward good bit of kit, I use it alot zeroing and for checking/setting up bait sites for charles things have a habit of looking closer in the dark and its good to know the range in advance, so yes very worthwhile having and this one wont break the bank. Rgds D2D
  17. Not wishing to diss you in anyway MM. but if you can see just how far apart a pair of eyes are at 300yds, your a far better man than the rest of us. Having foolishly read every contribution to this thread I am still no closer to what the "eck he,s on about. One thing is certain though, and that is that no one shoots at a pair of eyes .... ever. DOOOOH D2D
  18. Hi chaps I have a Deben Blue Eye sealed beam that I am going to drop into a Tracer Max housing, can anyone tell me what the wattage of the Blue Eye is and will it take kindly to being dimmed? The previous halogen bulb fitted to this lamp was 55watt and I,m trying to up the wattage, the dimmer is the Lightforce 100watt. Rgds D2D.
  19. Wooah dont go there, I made up a "cupboard" type of structure with new thermalite blocks and used it with a target enclosed for zeroing my .22, I used subs at 50yds, they quickly chewed a hole right through and started going through the hole after only a few sessions, so check the blocks everytime you go to use them as backstop. Mine were 4" thick but the only difference will be the time it takes to reduce the block to a crumble. Rgds D2D.
  20. I find maize or sweetcorn works very well, just use your knife to slice off some of the corn around the trap and put half the cob up the back behind the treadle plate, all bait sould be back there and no need to wire anything. I havnt tried peanut butter, it sounds ok being highly scented but you would need to bait the area around the trap with bits of bread and peanut butter. Site the trap if you can at the base of a tree they like to come down the trees it gives them a sense of security if they can come down the trunk swipe the food and run back up, eventually they will have to explore the trap and the remaing food within. Good luck D2D.
  21. This raises the interesting situation "MY FRIEND" has, he originally had a number of guns that would just fit into a 5 gun cab, he then got permission to aquire 3 more , obviously my friend would have to buy and fit another cab which he did, but here is the point, at no time has the fao questioned the security arrangements for these extra firearms, in fact the fao has not even visited when, or since, the 3 were applied for and granted. Whether the fao is just too busy or my friend is deemed trustworthy I dont know, but compared with some of the horror stories I read on here over the treatment of shooters by police and fao,s, then we have it fairly easy, for which we are obviously grateful. Rgds D2D.
  22. I managed to find a small compact battery operated pir lamp unit while on hol in Ireland, in a pound type shop (excepting though it cost £6 lol) It had a white lamp lens which I painted red, the rest of it I painted matt black, then gradually painted the red lens matt black until it was subdued enough to just show at 150yds. It works very well and ranks as high as an NV unit in usefulness in the kit. No more sweeping the area with the lamp as you just sit quietly and wait. I place it about 15ft back from the bait site facing my shooting position, usually my def with me sitting in the back lounging in a fishing type armchair, picture the comfort level and weep lol. When it comes on I pop up through the sunroof, check with the NV and if alls well its game on, charlies at the diner These pir units are well worth seeking out and if anyone finds a source we can all get to, pass the word. Rgds D2D.
  23. Why not just get a bright yellow case that has been fired and put it sideways in the breech, releasing the action on to it.... simple. Rgds D2D.
  24. Hi I have tried lots of different baits , they all work to some degree. A normal travel clock is all I use (a few pence at boot fairs) just make the cord long enough for the clock to be a little way from the bait, they all give off a ticking sound that we cant hear. I put my bait in an old net bag that onions come in, that way you can squish it abit and the scent flows freely, tie the bag securely about a foot up the post. I havnt tried it but a nylon pop sock might do the job if you cant find a net bag easily. Another "refinement" is to use a battery powered pir lamp, suitably blacked out to give a dull glow to indicate when Charlie is at the diner, I have been using one for about a month now and it saves disturbing the site by sweeping the lamp around checking. Once you have established the baiting point Charlie will come at roughly the same time each night, it will become part of the "round", my bait is visited 30mins after I cannot see through the bins anymore. Be sure to make yourself as comfortable as poss while waiting, nothing worse than waiting hours for a shot then missing because you ache and are stiff, I actually sit in a fold up canvas armchair lol. ATB and enjoy D2D.
