  1. always cracks me up there's one bloke shooting 60 yard pheasants with an ounce of the cheapest 7.5s he had and that his kills are all clean. 7.5s are not suitable for nearly all live quarry in the uk. Maybe super close game but even then, why would you need to when there are other tools better equipped for the job? Fact is 7.5s do not kill as effectively over a wider selection of species and distances most average people in the uk shoot, therefore you will certainly have more wounded game, not the right image for our sport. I wouldn't expect to change your opinion on this, but to the uneducated novice, on a public forum, that's clearly bad advice and bad publicity for shooting.....
  2. Purdey Damascus 12b o/u 32" fixed for the tall stuff Pair Holland royals 20b s X s for game and a bit of fun Pair boss 28bores for everything else, pigeons, walk around over the spaniels etc. probably 75% of the time. Couldn't pick my favourite of the three big brands so one of each sounded reasonable. I did receive a very very nice letter from Holland and Holland once and have since held them in slightly higher regard, if I'm ever lucky enough to be buying a new gun from one of the three, I'd take my interest there first....
  3. They are using an interesting new method to make the barrels, it's milled from a single piece rather than mono or Demi block, no side ribs as a result. Lots of hand made guns now days use a number of pre fabricated parts, probably done on cnc, before final fitting by hand etc. So it can be misleading. Personally I think hand made can be over rated, although not always. if guiseppe had two bottles of red rather than the one with dinner last night I doubt he's as accurate as he can be. Interesting gun at the price point, lots for your money, if you can live with the fact it's not got the heritage of a perrazi or beretta. I've been good all year, hope Mr. Claus has one on his sleigh....
  4. 2 things I might try myself, both based on a positive distraction. Is she relatively steady to a tennis ball? I would try and recall her then give her a distraction , retrieve, bang at the other end of the field, whatever ticks her interest. Then slowly approach her and try and condition her to being along side you. It does sound like this might be a similar scenario to what you've tried. Alternatively, have you thought of using a clicker? I'm a massive fan for very specific behavioural problems. I would by what ever means necessary, including pressure which I might add if all else failed, get her sat along side me from a recall whistle. Then click and chuck a ball. It sounds like she's ball keen. Won't do the steadiness much good but you can get that back. So whistle in, get close, click, throw. She should learn the process pretty quickly and it should modify her behaviour to come closer on the recall but as you know you need consistency in what you decide is close enough. It may also be she trying her luck? Although difficult to say without seeing it, but I'm sure you'd recognise that.
  5. No the dog should not damage the game at all, where is the line drawn in the dogs mind that because it's alive it can shake or crunch if but if it's dead it can't? It might be worth considering taking a few steps back, its possible you'll do a lifetimes harm in the dogs training by doing too much too soon, how old is the dog? Where are you based? I am sure there will be a recommendation from someone on here for a trainer in your area that can give a lesson or two.
  6. I don't see any modern guns being built to such a high standard as they used to be. Having said that if it's only half as good that could still be a lifetime of use for some people
  7. Fiocchi 25 gram, cheapish and by far the best I've used in a 20 bore. And that includes many if not all of those mentioned above.
  8. I believe that's suggesting 1/4 bottom and 3/4 top. Good luck with the sale, that shouldn't hang around long at that price.
  9. 80% of gundogs are pets as well. Most on your average shoot go shooting once a fortnight and go for walks during off season. Get one from working stock, you are more likely to have a dog with decent eyes and hips. By working stock, I'd say working not trial lines, as trial dogs can be a it hotter to handle, how much difference in labs I wouldn't be certain. I'm a spaniel man. Training isn't every day, but consistency is key, and that is the same if you want a well behaved dog from working or show lines.
  10. If I read this correctly he brings balls back but not dummies? You can get tennis ball dummies, have a Google. If the dummy is of more value to him you can hold that and let him hedge his bets if he brings the ball back you might throw the dummy for him. I'd Practise the recall first, then work up to a narrow alleyway with a ball and so on. Its important you don't let him fail at this stage so keep it simple and reduce the risk of him going wrong. Good luck, the guys above have given some sound advice.
  11. Correct. And you'd pay a hell of a lot more than what a decent set of ear defenders cost to get your hearing back if it goes!
  12. I find it hard to believe the trainer is worth visiting if he used this on your pup. Teach your dog to heel properly and have some patience In doing it with the slip lead. They have no place in gun dog training in my opinion.
  13. I always like the people who go Oh! No! You can't leave a dog for 8 hours etc etc. do they not sleep of a night time, going to let them out the house every three hours? Exercise is important but 20 minutes of running around flat out training is more than the dog will do wandering the garden or pen during the day. So it's not a problem really the hours you mention.
  14. Completely agree, they should mature Physically but also psychologically before being neutered. Amazes me when people do it so early.
  15. Nevertheless 2 awards in separate trials is no mean feat, not everyone gets to that level. plenty of champions have come from less red then this pedigree
  16. mallowdale x factor is black with a white bib unless I am mistaken
  17. Honestly, giving him a chance to put it right with a modified trap stock is giving him another chance to take you for a ride, be firm with the guy, if you ordered a conservatory on your house and got a greenhouse stuck on the side you'd say he's ripping you off, as he appears to be here. Good luck, sincerely hope you find a solution. Of course you could contact BASC legal department. I suspect that you'd get somewhere face to face with the guy
  18. Nothing to lose in asking for gun and deposit back. If he says no then you can reevaluate your options. Looks to me he's decided to shift a stock he already had onto you. The latest POW does not look comfortable to me either. I'd also be disappointed in that chequering
  19. Cabelas goretex hands down. If you ever get the chance to order from the U.S and get someone to bring it home The materials and quality are exceptional.
  20. The arms will have the mounts for the birds at an angle giving you an indication of how they should rotate.
  21. The four of you should try socialising outside of the home. The lab may be less jealous of the pup in a new environment for them both.
  22. I've read that that's associated with a nutrition problem, and changing food may help. The carrying is probably more a learned behaviour. I guess you could try removing her chances of success by picking it up immediately from the garden or run etc, then practice on a lead let her approach it, then a sharp tug on a slip lead and a firm no! Not sure how positive reinforcement will be possible here?
  23. Doing right by your dogs is very admirable, very brave decision well done. I sincerely hope they stay together and get great homes. Good luck
