  1. Because people tell you that they lose power its in your head that it will half its power in an hour or something, when I first starting shooting springers I was always anxious to de cock the gun if I hadnt had a shot within 10 minutes, so I checked it out with my local RFD, as an 18ftlb Lightning is a bitch to de cock, he laughed and told me what I said above. Chances are if you are going to leave it cocked it will be when you are cleaning it so give her a check before putting it away. Im a forgetful sod and Ive done it a couple of times. If you check the Beeman site the doctor himself says you can leave em cocked for a couple of weeks without loosing anything. Sort of dispells the myth eh?
  2. Using a 2 stroke engine is fair enough but when a terrier is on the go it spends the majority of its time with its head near the hole. Ive seen my dogs with their **** poking out of a hole and wouldnt be too chuffed if it got carbon monoxide poisoning after prolonged use. I was horrified when I seen that Fred Carter video, working terriers put a lot of trust in you and to do that for them to get better results, well your not being honest with them. I like getting in there with them digging and tearing and they respect you more for it so get your mits dirty lads.
  3. You cant beat the old Hardwoods (I think its called xtra brown or 20-200 or something) for all of our countryside and if your going to get 1 pattern for general purpose this is the one, good for winter, summer, stubble, trees, hedges the lot, never failed me. A deerstalker gave me that tip and true to his word its done me proud. Although he hastened to add that movement is the number one factor no matter what your wearing or what quarry you are after, and again Ive discovered that hes right.
  4. You can leave a modern spring gun cocked overnight without any loss of power, I had a Lightning E and left it cocked for a day and a half, chronoed it and it was doing exactly the same ftlbs as it always had, of course it isnt advisable. You cant leave it cocked for excessive periods, by that they mean a couple of days or more some people just get carried away with it and wait until the quarry is in front of them before cocking, dont worry too much about all that mate, I always stalked with it cocked from I got onto my shoot, anyway how much is a spring?

    .177 or .22

I would put it down to accuracy, if you find it hard to judge the hold over/ under and to judge ranges then go for .177, but if you are ok with that then by all means go for a .22, dont rule out .20 as it is the most efficient calibre for a legal limit gun, youll get roughly 700 odd fps and less of an arched trajectory than a .22, more stopping power than a .177, anyone that uses one will sing its praises. In an ideal world the best thing to do is go for an FAC and get a gun that will make .22s fly like FAC .177s, my gun blatters Prems out at 920 fps, holdover/under is nearly non existent out to 55 yards and it still holds 20 ftlbs out there, anything hit with a 14.5 grain pellet at 800 fps is going to stay hit and does.
  6. The stock on my Rapid is in need of being refinished, I want to have a go myself, could someone explain how to do it and what with? I like the sound of the Napier stuff, but what about sanding and applying the oil? and how many coats of oil etc? Thanks.
  7. FAC Rapid, without a doubt, try to get a second hand one with the Anchutz barrel, they are now knocking them out with 22 inch Lothar Walther ones (Anchutz is 19") All the ones with Anchutz barrels are pre 10,000ish (SN) Get a bipod for it and you will be able to snipe game at 70 yards no sweat, I wouldnt go any further than that simply because Im not confident enough yet but Id say the gun would be up for it ok, I was plinking with mine shooting a coke can @ 100 yards great fun In the US a magnum air rifle is more versatile than a normal firearm as you can use it in suburban areas and pretty much everywhere firearms arent allowed, shot capacity is good, you can fill the gun to 3100psi for better consistency or to 3200 for more shots. One tip is to get a 300bar big capacity divers tank , when I bought my gun I got a 15ltr 232 bar job and emptied it in an afternoon, I only get 20 good fills out of this bottle. A friend of mine has the S410E, a good gun but has 3-4X more fps variation than the Rapid. Its also by far the easiest FAC PCP I have ever cycled(14lbs of cocking effort) when you are filling the magazine no pellets can fall out of the mag, unlike some rotary magazines. Customers in the States have had some serious quality issues with Daystates and Loguns(see the yellow forum and Review centre) But in the UK they are luxury guns that are reknown for their steadiness. The Beeman Super Rapid 7/12 as it is known in the US as Im sure you will know is a much sought after gun, if you look after it it will last you a lifetime. You can also turn the power up or down(20-30ftlbs I think) to suit different pellet weights as at 30 it will blow lightweights apart. I tend to run mine at 25 with 16 grn lead Exterminators, its clocking just over 900fps (.22) and shoots flatter than a 12 ftlb .177, it is a quite expensive rifle in the US of A but well worth it. There is a review by an American guy who tests a .177 version here: http://www.airguns.net/reviews/super17.html Check it out and see for yourself mate. I can recommend this gun as I own it and know a bit about it, if you like Ill get my mate who owns the S410E to send you an email with a bit of info on that, of course he will sing its praises but he has a deposit down on a Rapid after seeing mine!

    Best caliber

On JVCs site there is an article on long range airgun shooting, a guy called Donovan took a prairie dog at 147 yards with an AAS410E, so it can be done albeit with high powered guns. My own gun (FAC Rapid) is zeroed at 50 yards and does 30ftlbs, it does have the means to go out a hell of a lot further but the most extreme range Ill go for is 70 yards off a bipod, to be honest if you say you take quarry @ 100 yards then I believe you but I think that it isnt very responsible with a 12ftlb airgun, there are too many things to go wrong at 40 yards never mind 100. And as stated the pellet wouldnt have much energy left out there, not very confidence inspiring.
  9. Trade it in on a Rapid mate youll never look back, there are loads of them on the BBS all the time, usually about £400 ish quid and up, there was actually a mk II that went for £400 the other night.
  10. Frank 555............do you honestly think that anyone cares? If you are going to post please go easy on the cheese mate, cause at the minute your posts would amount to a great mountain of Stilton......GROW UP!!!!!
  11. Clubshot the guy that makes the Exterminators is sending me a free trial pot, unfortunately if I like them there isnt anyone who stocks them Thanks for the info mate. BTW, out of interest just how far down and up can you take the Rapid power wise? Im going to collect mine on the 27th I cant wait! Ill keep you posted amigo.

    Bipods

I was looking at a Rapid the other week and it had a Harris bipod on it, to say it made it front heavy would be the understatement of the year.
  13. I notice Denihow mentioning different pellets at different ME, I have a mk1 rapid coming at the end of the month, can you adjust the power on it, this one does 30ftlb at the minute, but I would like to get it down to 20-25 for lighter pellets, 30 can be a bit much for them I hear.
  14. Best advice I could give you is to get out with your binoculars and learn your ground, find out where they roost and be there at the right time, the same with rabbits. It can be boring but all this groundwork will pay off for you. Also it will take time for you to start picking things up so keep plugging on and when youre shooting keep still as often as much as you can.
