  1. Looks like quite a controversial round anyway. Thanks for the input.
  2. Nice shooting tubba. I missed one with the single barrel fourten yesterday, didn't get time for a reload and second shot, found some new dreys but a lot of thin twigs high up where the squirrels run. I'll be back down there with the twelve bore next time.
  3. Nice shots with the .410 mate. I've just started using mine again, mainly for rats but we've got plenty of squirrels as well. Looks like you have. Still, I like the sport of squirrel shooting,it's one of my favourite shooting sports. Thinking about putting a variation on for fac air, been using some cci cb longs at about 35 ft lbs but the aren't very accurate at much above 20-25 ...

  4. Thanks for that pixie, just had a look at a 2nd hand one in local gun shop but he wanted £800 for the set up. I'm gonna keep looking. Until then I will have to stick with the cci cb longs for the greys but they're not very accurate more than 20 yards. The rapid fac looks like the ideal squirrel rifle.

  5. Just wondered if anyone has tried the segmented hp subs from cci and if so,what are your impressions.
  6. My bird hoovers the house, that's why I married her!
  7. Hi pixie,I liked the squirrel foray picture. I do game and wildfowl shooting but I just love squirrel shooting and rabbit shooting the best. Some of my favourite shooting has been squirrels, great fun. Been thinking of putting in for a variation for an air rifle. Would you recommend the rapid? When I learn how to post pictures I will post some on the forum. Got to admit I'm not too cleverco...

  8. Gats work on air compression and inertia
  9. I've shot plenty of ducks with cylinder choke, less is more in most situations. I use tighter chokes for walked up shooting but quarter and half should do wot ya need. Also if you connect with a heavy load and a tight choke you will cause a lot of meat damage and if you want to eat what you shoot, thats not good. I'd save the tight chokes mainly for foxes. That's just my opinion.
  10. Has anyone tried an open choke .410? If so,what's the patern like a ten to fifteen yards compared with full choke? I'm thinking of cutting down my single barrel chimbo, it's full choke at the moment and seems a bit tight at these ranges for a fast moving squirrel or rat. I don't want to ruin the gun so would like to know if anyone has tried one with a more open choke. Is it better or is it worse without the tight choke?
  11. Should last for decades if they are kept dry.
  12. Just shot an elephant with my Webley senior air pistol.

I had a blue steak years ago it was a great little lightweight gun. Bit stiff to pump but I wish I still had it.
  14. If you are tuning an hw 80 for power you need to open up the transfer port to 4 mm. This increases power and reduces recoil. This mod is a must with a stronger spring or piston bounce will cause massive recoil increase. All hw80's benefit from a 4 mm transfer port because of the large compression cylinder.
  15. .22 shot cartridges are about as useful as a chocolate teapot IMO .

H&n .20 ftt's work for me so I'm sticking with em.

Same weight with smaller surface area equals higher bc, so slower to lose velocity it gives a flatter trajectory as it reaches the target quicker. Never said sub 12 ft lbs .22's dont kill vermin. I've shot loads with a .22. I just think that they work better with a bit more poke. I find the .20 better at sub 12 ft lbs than the .22. Heavier, less aerodynamic objects need more power / velocity for the same performance as far as trajectory is concerned. Just my opinion.
  18. Bumped into ray smith the river cottage butcher in Lyme Regis . Had a good chat, he told me where the original river cottage is and even then it took a bit of finding. The "game on "DVD is worth a look. It's got shooting and butchery and some old footage from cook on the wild side.

In my opinion .20 is the best hunting calibre sub 12 ft lbs . They fly flatter than .22 even at the same pellet weight because they have better drag coefficient so the take longer to slow down, therefore holding their energy for longer down range. I have been using air rifles for vermin for 35 years and have used all four calibres but for the last 15 years or so my .20 theoben sirocco has been my air rifle of choice on most occasions. It's great with 11.4 grain h&n ftt . I reckon one foot pound energy per one grain pellet weight is the ideal minimum for small vermin. Unfortunately this almost rules out the .22 off ticket but I did say ideally. Just try .22 heavies or .25 at sub 12 ft lbs and you will see for yourself, it's not really enough. Other than very short range work.
  20. Try cci cb longs these do 35 ft lbs in my anshutz 14 inch carbine or Remington cb's at around the same energy. These are both solid bullets. If you want hollow points try the Remington cbees. It says 40 ft lbs on the box but beware because they leave my short barrel at around 56 ft lbs energy but they are more accurate and they expand well.
