You're basically talking about creating an anchor to allow you to lean out over a drop. Perfectly possible to set up safely with normal climbing kit but will probably not meet any sort of professional regs. If you've got to ask how to do it, then frankly, you shouldn't be - it doesn't sound as if you know how to create an adequate anchor (not necessarily very easy in normal cheesy dolomite limestone), how to equalise it, how to best attach yourself or how to ensure any level of redundancy in the system. None of these things are skills that are learnt overnight.

Neil I've got a Seeland Hercules folding job - nice and easy to put up and take down, though I've never tried one of the telescoping ones which may be even easier. You are welcome to borrow it to see if it suits your needs if you wish. Tom

A conditional discharge and an absolute discharge both count as convictions for this purpose. Details of parking offences and fixed penalty notices do not need to be declared.

Folks My local beagle pack are running a fishing match not far from Junction 10 of the M40 on 7th June and still have a few pegs left. £25 per team, including coffee and a bacon roll when you get there. In fairness to BASC, I actually think they handle their governance stuff pretty well - there aren't many organisations who have their 'board' (council) minutes on such prominent display (front page of their website) for example. I have no problem with the process - I'd just say don't vote for the guy!

Absolutely and a lot of organisations use current or ex politicians to good effect - the CA's Kate Hoey, Baroness Mallalieu and Simon Hart all spring to mind. But can the management and oversight of an organisation that claims to represent all shooters in the UK really be trusted in part to someone who has used the language and voted in the way that Martyn Jones has done? Personally I would feel extremely uneasy about his ability to champion and negotiate policies that I would be comfortable with.

Here's a nice quote from Mr. Jones (2008); “Any move to reopen the issue of fox hunting is utterly ridiculous. The Act was only passed into law in 2005 and was widely debated. It is an act which signalled the end to a cruel and outmoded form of upper class enjoyment." Leaving aside any particular views on hunting with hounds, it does rather suggest that Mr. Jones is not afraid to use the class based rhetoric so beloved of shooting's opponents. He must get on well with George Monbiot! I would urge any BASC members who think that Mr. Jones' views on hunting make him an unacceptable candidate to use their vote wisely and to make sure that their fellow BASC members know of Mr. Jones' stance.

Neil Sounds like you'v got a good grip on it to me mate. I'm sure i downloaded a sample RA template from the BASC site (there's loads online anyway). Redgum - mine was much the same experience!

Neil You don't say whether you think it would be safe to shoot with either .17 or .22. Presumably you've thought it through though as otherwise you wouldn't be contemplating it. If that's the case, I'd suggest that you need to demonstrate to your firearms team that you can shoot over the land safely - explain to them which areas and arcs of fire are safe, how you would manage any risks (like telling the landowner you are going to be there for example) and what adaptations you might need to make (like shooting from a high seat). Some will take the **** for this but do a risk assessment! Make as strong a case as you possibly can, communicate it properly and generally (in my experience) common sense will (usually!) prevail.

Yes, basically. I'm not sure if BASC did but it was certainly in Shooting Times as well. I suppose my point (if I have one) is that it's easy to criticise the representative organisations (not that this was necessarily your intention when starting this thread or that such criticism is always unjustified / not useful) but that sometimes individuals, even when 'spoon fed' don't always take action themselves. It's generally easier to blame 'them' than to take responsibility for your own inaction. We all do it to a greater or lesser extent For what it's worth by the way, I signed the petition and I have no interest whatsoever in pistol shooting.

Wymberly I may not have made myself clear. My point is, it's in the bloody CA email!!! And it's on the front page of their website (and has been since late March).

Ridiculously, I'm in the CA, BASC and the BDS. I am a member of the CA (and before that the BFSS) because I come from a background of hunting with hounds and the CA is the only organisation effectively representing that particular sport. My BDS membership reflects my interest in stalking and wider interest in deer. BASC I just joined to be able to book ranges at Bisley, although I think they do good work with promoting shooting sports. Even being a member of all three costs me less than £200 a year, which I can ill afford but in terms of what I spend on shooting / hunting overall isn't that much and I feel duty bound to try and secure some kind of future for field sports. The insurance influences me not one bit.
