  1. As the title suggests...I left my Mrs a couple of weeks ago. Tried to arrange a few times to collect my guns to get an RFD to hold them, but she has been a bit of a pain with dates, although it's all been fairly amicable. We're both coppers so reasonably sensible on the 'domestic' side of things. However, my gaffer has decided in his infinite wisdom to get my guns taken away because I am 'going through a difficult time', and 'we have to manage any potential risk'. To say I'm a bit miffed is an understatement. I've done nothing wrong and it was my choice to leave. Now apparently I've got to wait on the firearms licensing manager doing a report before I'll find out what's happening. Anyone else had guns taken in similar circumstances?
  2. I've got one, and I love it. Prefer it to my old AL391. Slightly surprised it doesn't seem to have a bigger following. Although, thinking about it, the Maxus and SX3 are a good bit cheaper and probably just as good. But they're NOT Berettas! I love the weight, or more accurately, lack of. Good quality finish and machining, apart from a little rough spot on the bolt.
  3. Hello all, I'm in Macclesfield, and I'm trying (and struggling) to find a local supplier for HMR rounds. Ironically, Edgar Brothers are a stone's throw away, but they only sell to trade. I usually go to Cheshire Gun Room in Stockport, but surely there must be a smaller dealer somewhere nearer. I can get shotgun carts from Chelford Farm supplies which is closer, but not HMR....Anyone know of any smaller dealers closer to sunny Macc? Cheers Gibbo
  4. Its .17HMR, Brad. Walshie that sounds like an answer!
  5. As above- why? I am finding a lot of obviously damp crud in the moderator when I clean it. I clean my kit immediately after each use, so I know it's not condensation. I don't leave the barrel coated in oil, and the amount of moisture doesn't seem to be related to oil being blown out the barrel and into the mod, so again, I pretty sure it's not down to excessive lube. Does anyone know what causes this?
  6. Thanks for the advice, Underdog. I'll make sure the mod is left off. And I am a clean-freak with guns, so it will be looked after!Silverhawk, I went for the twenty inch barrel, just a personal preference. I wanted to keep the length, and use an over-barrel moderator. Andy, I bought it from Cheshire Gun Room (half hour drive from me), but they got it through Edgar Brothers, which is a five minute drive down the road! I was lucky, because I got it for a promotional price. I really rate Cheshire Gun Room, helpful staff. Went back out today with it, and found that it will be fed a staple diet of Hornady V-max. I zeroed at 100 yards, scientifically measured using my man-strides. EDIT- just done a bit of maths, the shots were taken at more like 80 yards.
  7. Patience is a virtue after all! Took just under 4 months, so not too bad from Cheshire. Picked up an HMR thumbhole today, then went to zero it in. Really nice to fire a rifle again, because it's been a while. Don't miss the noise from the scattergun at all! I've never used HMR before, and expected it to be a bit louder, but with a whisper mod it's pretty damn quiet by my reckoning. The farmer said he never heard a thing, so bonus. After a bit of faffing about before getting lead on paper, I was clover leafing at about 100 yards, with the expected flyer taking the groups out to about an inch and a half. I am really impressed with the quality of CZ. Hopefully with a bit of practice I'll do it some justice.

  9. Anyone know what position the bolt needs to be in before I can drive the retaining pin out? I've tried various ways and it's not budging, and I'm obviously not willing to give it a good skelp in case I damage anything....
  10. Apologies if this has been done already, I searched using the tool but nothing showed up... Looks like old Nigel is willing to put his neck/political career on the block....doesn't this make him a conviction politician? http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/jan/24/nigel-farage-uk-gun-control-laws-relaxed Sorry its the Guardian version. Don't judge me! Obviously the comments sections vary greatly depending on which rag you read it on. The Mail's comments are pretty much all pro, whereas the Guardian is, well, typically wet, limp-handshake brigade.
  11. hello folks, some advice please. Should I go through the breaking in process, or is it a waste of time for a 17hmr? Has anyone had any negative effects from not 'breaking it in', in a carefull, almost witchcraft-like ritual?
  12. Just a thought on a quick mod then that might help prevent damage.... Would drilling a couple of tiny holes into the bottom of the magazine be feasible? This would let the gases escape easier without blowing the mag apart. I'm picking up a 455 soon so if the construction of the mag allows this, I'll do it.
  13. Nothing too flash for the shotgun, a Fabarm XLR5 'oiled', and for the rifle I'll take the SRS Recon Scout with .243 and. 308 barrels. That is all!
  14. Well, I can work our range in yards if the target size is measured in yards...but I get lost when I try and use inches for the target size! Maths was never my strong point. How do I use inches for the target size, but get the range in yards? Cheers Kent. Merry Christmas all. Lol! This thread is exactly why I sometimes don't bother even looking at PW for a while. But I'm hooked so I always end up coming back for more. Happy Crimbo fella!
  15. I'd quite happily sacrifice some spelling and grammar ability if it meant I could get my head round range estimations using mil-dots and zeroing properly!
  16. Yup. Agree with them all except number 26...the only time I get uncomfortable watching internet porn is when I get pins and needles in my left arm and the laptop heats up too much and starts to burn my thighs
  17. ...is always nice to see! http://www.varsity.co.uk/sport/6380
  18. Speaking of medicals...a 10 year period potentially gives someone time to go from sane to having mental health problems. Would we accept that an interim medical would be on the cards?
  19. That sounds like a pretty fair deal to me. I should use the same theory on the females in my house..."Whatever you two spend on horses, I can spend on guns"....
  20. I called up today to see how things were going. Very helpful again! It seems that they are waiting to hear back from my GP. I was off work with stress in 2006, but that didn't affect me getting my SGC, so that SHOULD be fine. Also, the FEO gave the time of day to have a chat about the land, which hasn't been cleared. But on discussing it, he said he'll check it and it sounds fine. We talked about the calibres I requested, and this also sounds good as he's an HMR fan. He said that when he gets the reply from the GP, he'll call to arrange a visit. Seems to be moving fairly swiftly. CZ 455 Thumbhole from Santa hopefully....
  21. Without a doubt my favourite moment of the weekend occurred this afternoon. The farm I shoot on has a ten month old collie, who is about as full of beans as a dog can be. The farmer often says to me to take him out with me if I want, but I've always politely declined. Although he's not likely to be anywhere near guns, I don't want to make him gun-shy and he's never really been exposed to any proper noise, although he'll hear me shoot fairly often. Also to be honest, I thought he'd get in the way. However, today he took it upon himself to come with me and there wasn't a whole lot I could do about it. I can usually get him to stay in the main yard, but not today. So I thought, '****** it. I'll take him. If he gets a fright when I shoot, he'll just go home'. I just reckoned I'd need to be careful with how close he was to me if I fired, so as not to do his hearing in. He instantly went about getting into the scrub, and did several full-on points, holding the point for a good twenty seconds or so sometimes. I watched with great amusement as he'd flush and then chase the bunnies. After he'd done it a good few times I thought I'd have a pop just to see how he'd react. He flushed one out and it ran across open ground, with plenty of distance gained by the rabbit before the young lad realised it was doing a runner. A sporting runner at thirty yards, I fired and dropped it. Best of all, from the corner of my eye I could see that the dog hadn't even batted an eyelid from the noise, and was running towards his (unknown to him) 'victim'! I gave him tons of praise and he was loving it, and was very keen to examine the rabbit. A heart, lungs and liver later, I took him back to the farm and left him parading victoriously with the pelt! If that's what a collie will do, I can't wait to get a Vizsla! I spent the rest of the afternoon shooting alone, and it did indeed feel very alone. Just got to wait until circumstances change in a couple of years before I can take the plunge.
  22. Crikey! If it happens that quickly for me, I'll need to sell a kidney, unless Mrs Gibspoon is feeling especially festive this Christmas....
  23. Thanks folks. That gives me a rough idea then, and I also anticipate land problems, as its only 36 acres with a public footpath (loads of safe backstops though). I'm in sunny Macclesfield. The FEO that came out for my SGC was Wayne...not sure if he's still there. When I've phoned up it's always been one of the ladies. The timescale gives me a chance to save for a CZ!
