  1. im sure theres more experienced people on here than me, but maybe going right back to basics? stair landing with a ball or dummy so when he comes back he cant go round you or escape, maybe by re learning thats the right way with loadsa praise and gradually introduce out in garden, then back into the field...... good luck matey
  2. had the same problem mate, have 2 8 month springers, i tried the long lead and spent more time getting tangled up and tripped over the bloody thing, when they was 6 months i tried different things as both was different. took them out seperately so they have my full attenttion, get them hyped up with tennis ball while on lead, then let them off, bouncing ball on the floor, they was more interested in the ball and me than anything else. i started throwing ball only a few feet in front and behind making sure they could see it, then started introducing sit/wait then send off, with in 2 weeks of lots of ball play at home and out in the field things started coming together, at home i would throw dummy in garden and send them of, then follow it up out in the field, small steps, if they get bored i stop, when they have done there job give them the biggest fuss ever, also dont get disheartened, angry there still young.... i always finish of doing something they can do so it ends on good terms. Also what i found out is by having someone with you and trying something different worked, heres a vid of mine at 6 months on a good day, dont turn volume up as i sound like a crazy mad man lolol, http://s1281.photobucket.com/user/Steven_Alderton/media/MOV_0026_zps4e7f47b7.mp4.html what works with dog dont work with my bitch so always trying to do things to turn naughty behaviour back round to good behaviour, im no trainer but had have had lots of advice from trainers, from an early age he they was getting used to whistle and learning recall recall recall, but when they started bolting i introduced stop whistle, although not 100% if they get to 50 yards now a 3 second whistle usually stops them in there tracks,,,,,,, mine are still young in my head so playtime outside i will throw a dummy, set them of and blow stop whistle, making sure im stood inbetween them and the dummy..... i dont give treats, only lots of praise, good luck matey, there not all the same and can be very trying at times....cheers for now steve
  3. i have a 10 gun cabinet, feo said i could have as many as i want and should be able to easily squeeze 15 in it i then asked could i have that in writing please just incase there is any hang ups down the line, he quickly said NO if another feo took over down the line would he believe our verbal conversation ever happened? nah dont think so so il stick to what it says on the cabinet to cover my butt all the best steve
  4. welcome aboard from sunny grantham
  5. also got a al391 mate, before that i was using a nice lightweight 410 and a drainpipe 20 bore hushpower, when i moved up although gun felt great and fitted me well i couldnt hit a barn door with it. Anyways after getting down in the dumps about it i did a search on here and there was loads of people saying that they just couldnt get on with them, now i parted with a nice wad of cash so i went back to basics, for a whole week or 2 i was doing 10 minutes dry mounting morning and afternoon following cracks on ceilings and mirrors, not holding out much hope but i tried, on the first outting after my hit ratio had trebled and my confidence started coming back. I also patterned out to 30 yards with half choke with 2 different choices of carts, 5 and 6's 30's and for me noticed that i was actually shooting under my target, worked out 70% shot fell below my target so for me pattern was well out, so then back on roost shooting i adjusted my aim to compensate, nearlly blanking out target with bead and voilla i was there. It sure is depressing when you get a new gun and expect to hit everything but perservere mate, i didnt use my 410 nor 20 bore for a good 6 months, only ever took the al391 out, and to be honest in past year i think they have only been out twice each, it fits me so well now im used to it, only use cheap carts, if decoying i use 1/2 choke if roost shooting in high firs i use 3/4 but even then for a **** shot like me i cant tell the difference :-) good luck matey
  6. hi does anyone have any going dirt cheap they no longer need please, need to hone up on a few things to get my springer into shape many thanks steve
  7. if i ***** a bird when using 5's 32 , i know they pattern well i only have myself to blame, i use 6's out to 30 yards but anything more if planned id rather have the extra stopping power like you say, i then know the guns performing, i have the right carts, if i miss all i can do is kick myself.
  8. whichevers on offer at the time 6 30's decoying, 5 32's for high tree roost shooting, rabbits, although to be fair i havnt noticed the difference in hit rate with either
  9. mines nearlly 5 months, 2 springers ,concentrated so far on being good in house, good with kids, general housetraining, there now clean, dont nip, basically the start of a good house dog. bitch - off the lead recalling well out to 40 yards, loves playing with toys with the odd few times of 1/2lb rabbit dummy, i throw, she brings i praise.... if it dont work out then of she goes and plays, great loveable pup, loves to please and would come on loads if i put the work in, not so good on lead but getting there dog - great on lead, had a few teething problems indoors, food agression, basically a stubborn mutt.... not of the lead yet needs a couple more weeks as recall for me is not upto scratch, wont be of untill i trust him although 50ft long lead works well with his sister. there chalk and cheese and for some not coming on nicely... * by 6 months i had mine beating etc etc * im working with both steadily, not rushing, want things 100% before i move onto guns etc, although i knew a shoot would be on in the distance today so had them out most the afternoon,in the distance you can hear them popping them of, dog wasnt bothered, bitch was, but a few runs and recalls on the whistle as soon as i heard them start she soon forgot about them. if by a year i have a half decent decoying/flushing dog i will be happy, if not then il work alot harder, dunno if im doing right but working so far, all the best steve
  10. pleased all is well mate, we have 2 springer pups, about a month back one had tried chewing bars on crate and got bottom jaw stuck, squeeling out was terrible, i had to jump in crate to stop him trying to pull away, was a mad 5 minutes i can tell you, then a week later the bitch got her paw stuck when she was coming out, so in i went again, bloody crates can be dangerous at time but never thought about them dragging stuff through from the top.... will make sure ours is always clear, all the best steve
  11. got 2 13 week old srpingers and must say these are making me laugh, our "fun" has started, lost the lawn, lost plants, my prize japanese acer is a twig, one threw up bits of wire and for the life of us couldnt work out how they had got on the sink to steal brillo, turns out they hadnt they had removed the drain cover, removed the drain grill, the hose reel that was on top of it and enjoyed munching the fancy delights that was in there 1 last thing, my missus cannot find one of her slippers and for the life of us it has completely dissapeared arghhhhh.. gotta love em though :-)
  12. we always have puritan in the house, what kind of mill would you use on a dog? go by weight of a kid and use that i presume?
  13. i stripped my s/b 20g down a month back after about 500 shots of plastics through it, apart from a bit of grime it wasnt bad at all, no plastic.... then the problem comes as some say dont clean some say do lolol, after it took me 2 hours to get the damn end of i thought while im here i will clean it up..... again couldnt tell no difference in noise.
  14. check out wilkos if you have one, went in today and the green garden sticks just over a foot high are 10p a pack, i got a few, just snap in half and jobs a good un
