  1. I am not able to get out as often as I would like these days but the other day I saw a flightline heading for 4 rape fields about a mile away. I got 3 mates to shoot the stubbles and I shot the flightline it was blowing a gale and the pigeons heading to the rape stubbles had the wind behind them, what a brilliant day there was certainly no chance of a second shot if the first was missed I dread to think what the average was but certainly worse than 4 to one. I would swap all my 200+ days for a few days like that, I picked up 68 the other three had just over 200 between them.
  2. Nice one. Totally agree with what you said below. I could have shot at a lot more if I shot at the birds outside the killing zone . I just don't see the point in shooting birds that you have very little chance of picking up . I would rather leave them for another day ,and any how I don't want to tramp through the standing barley .
  3. Cheers JDog back to the drawing board then its going to be a pretty poor harvest for me with half the farms I shoot having only drilled half their acreage.
  4. I have been shooting pigeons for getting on for 50 years now and this year is the first time any of the places I shoot have grown mustard this they have done because it was too wet for spring drilling. So having no experience of this crop is it worth keeping an eye on, it is around an inch tall at the moment. There were a few pigeon around today but they could still be budding. I am looking for some advice from someone who has made reasonable bags on mustard in the past.
  5. Without a doubt May and early June are the least productive.
  6. Totally agree and I think the last bag I had of over 200 was about 6 years ago and I haven't seen enough birds in this area since then to make that sort of bag.
  7. I think nearly all my big days have been on bean stubble apart from a 225 on standing peas and a 217 on rape stubble.
  8. Totally agree or sometimes we toss up for who takes the first shot and they continue to shoot first until they miss the first shot, it tends to make you concentrate more. To use this method though you need to be about the same ability or one will miss out .
  9. Nice one sounds like you deserve it hope all goes well.
  10. I too have never seen anything on linseed worth setting up for.
  11. In my opinion the only way to make a bag on winter rape is to cover as many fields as possible with guns who are willing to stay put to keep the birds moving. You can bet that as soon as one gun packs up because of lack of shooting that is where the pigeons will head, although this time of year it becomes more difficult to make a bag on rape as the birds can move on to clover spring drillings buds etc when dsiturbed.
  12. All I can say is I have shot numerous 200+ bags all of which have been from the middle of a field.
  13. Fair enough but I have come across people who claim to have shot fantastic bags of 200+ on the clicker yet only picked up a few. I can see they are a useful tool to know how many you have to pick up but myself and all I shoot with only count the number actually picked up as the final bag.
  14. It is always my place of choice whenever possible you get a 360 degree killing zone and you don't need an elaborate hide the normal poles and nets will do. Keep as still as possible until birds are in range it's movement that will put them off not the appearance of another bush in the middle of the field.
  15. So why did you need a clicker surely on drilling all shot birds could have been picked and counted or do you count the ones you think you hit also.
  16. Nice one JDog really pleased for you I am going to get back into the pigeons this year and hopefully regain some of the land I lost, the pheasant shoot will carry on but its time I got back into a bit of shooting myself.
  17. Don't use anything just drill holes in the bottom has worked for me for the last 35 years so probably won't change now.
  18. That can be a bit of a problem with expert shots like yourself old'un but if that happens then it is just a pleasure to watch a master at work. I also agree J Dog sharing the decoys or flightline in two separate hides can be good as long as they are close enough for taking the pi** usually out of me I may add.
  19. What I do when shooting two to a hide is toss up at the beginning to see who has first shot and they continue to have first shot until they miss it tends to make you concentrate somewhat.
  20. I never shoot at big flocks just jump up and down waving my arms about like a lunatic to try and get rid of them one or two bangs at a big flock and that is them off for the day. Hopefully after getting rid of all the birds in the area you wish to shoot they return in more manageable numbers that is of course if you have done your reconnaissance and the field you are setting up on is the one on which the birds wish to feed.
  21. Nice one JDog I trust you made as good a job of it as you did here.
  22. Nice one JDog upping your range a bit from the 32 yard maximum then, glad you had a good day mate
  23. Hopefully the pigeons will move away from land you can shoot to someones land who appreciates them more.
