As the saying goes PeterHenry “Its not my world I’m just living in it “ Firstly I would not wish to be in the position you describe to have that influence and if I was unlucky enough to be in that position I wouldn’t be the man I am today. That said I would not be minded to enforce any restrictions on game shooting and would rather the environment existed where people would choose to cut back on excess voluntarily. The main reason for choosing not to enforce such ideals is because there are always unforeseen repercussions and once done it’s hard to go back.
I realise that whatever form sporting shooting takes and whether I personally wish to take part in that aspect of the sport or not I will always side with those who take part in fieldsports simply because overall I hope I share far more in common with them than with those who would see our sport stopped.

As I have said earlier in this thread I have no interest in enforced regulation where there is no measurable gain whether it is lead shot or shooting practices. I do feel that excesses in our sport do us no favours and wish those taking part in those excesses could see beyond the challenge of the next bird and were able to appreciate more because the sport is so much more than feathered clay targets.     Less sometimes is more and the ability to enjoy the whole day not just racking up a big bag is something I think all sportsmen should strive to achieve.

Well done jall25 .Out of interest how many hours work did it take to get to that point?

    Hi Konor

I did that in about 10 hours

I have made quite a few now

This is about 45 metres long by 20 wide

    thanks for posting

Yes it really is good for everything really

That must be very satisfying for you. Akin to catching a trout on a fly you’ve tied yourself.

Yes - i actually really like the wildlife more than the shooting i think

Here is a nice example of a wild bird shoot, recognised for its efforts in Purdey Awards.

Not read it all - but totally disagree that a fox is no threat after July !

The biggest problem with small shoots is vermin and predator control

each of the predators eat 365 days a year there is massive pressure on the 500 poults from the casual rambler blackberry pickers dog Walker the weather and predation on not only the poults but also on the feed in the cover crops along with the supplementary feeding that’s eaten by deer badgers squirrels and rats

    Just my thoughts

to anyone going down this path be prepared for hard work and long days 😊

Yes it funny isnt it how so many of the people involved want to come and shoot the vermin / fox / deer - until its cold - raining - a weekday - the clocks have changed - its a friday night - its a saturday night - its a sunday night ! hahahahahaha

    I love it

Insect hatches aren’t what they once were either. You used to have to clean the whole front of your car of insects in summers past . I can’t remember the last time I did that.

    Yes thats very true

Im planting vast amounts of wild covers / flower meadows and digging lots and lots of ponds - i have numbers just starting to come back and last year had millions of grasshoppers !

That's great that you tried to get grey partridge back onto your land. It sounds like you had everything in place just not enough breeding success - which is measured by chick survival rate. Everything that reduces that rate below a certain figure (namely rainfall levels at the wrong time and the right insects at the right density at the right time) means that the population goes extinct over time.  If you are still keen on trying again the GWCT and their local groups will be a great help. The key issue is the source of birds - they need to be ones that still have the ability in the wild not only to pick good nesting sites, but to lay eggs and hatch off the chicks, and to know what to do next - both parents help out here. Happy to have a chat on the phone about all this if of interest.

This would make a brilliant and interesting thread - and also something positive

I think - having spent hours watching that the main issue is foxes - and then a year of weather like we are having does the broods in

Got to agree again. Relatively easy to collect shell cases, but wads are another matter. If we go over to steel, I am yet to be convinced about the fully enclosed wads degrading .

Perhaps someone can enlighten me. The view is that birds pick up harmful lead shot by ingesting it. Does the same not apply to steel shot? As steel shot isn't used very much, can any survey be reliable?

And imagine the animals and birds eating bit of plastic wad - surely frying pan to fire ?

How can you consult after the event?  That is like shooting someone then asking them if they wanted to be shot!  I binned BASC after the leaked John Swift minutes and I have now binned the NGO for their support of this idiocy.

Totally agree Weihrauch - just seems such an odd thing to be doing

    Commit to the transition

Then spend the next few years asking if we are happy with it ?

Sorry to hijack thread - but how much is this Chris ?

Yes, there has been 4 years of consultation including on this forum. If you mean were BASC members asked in advance of the announcement of February 2020 by nine organisations about that announcement, no they were not asked in advance, because for BASC's part in that, this was a policy decision taken by BASC's Council -  who are made of BASC members elected by the wider BASC membership to make policy decisions for BASC.

Yes thats what i meant Conor and i think thats seems to be so much of the issue for so many people

We seem to be going backwards. Now you are again not only conflating voluntary transition and lead bans but also singling out BASC. At the end of the day its a voluntary transition that you have clearly misunderstood for 4 years as a ban, which is fine, there has been a lot of misinformation. Looking ahead you can choose to move away from lead shot for some of your game shooting or not. You currently don't wish to, that is your choice, and I respect that, and appreciate you sharing your views about it.

    Conor

Was the membership of BASC asked about the voluntary transition then ?

I have copy and pasted advice from GWCT webpage below. Its a voluntary transition so its your decision to continue with lead shot for your rat control.

    https://www.gwct.org.uk/advisory/lead-ammunition/moving-away-from-lead-shot/

All shot can ricochet. This is most likely to occur off rocks or other hard surfaces and, to a lesser extent, water and trees. There is evidence that steel ricochets slightly more than lead, but this is in a more predictable path. The fact remains that an unsafe shot with lead is an unsafe shot with steel.

The references are from 2009 i believe !

Yes totally - but im not on about safe or unsafe shots - simply that steel has the potential to come back in peoples faces

Thanks. I guess we all have a budget for our recreational shooting expenditure - whether it's the quarry we are harvesting, where we shoot, or what we shoot with. There are fuel costs, the food, the accommodation, etc. Ammunition is part of the cost. The evidence is clear that the lead shot we shoot into the open countryside (outside shooting ranges where the risks can be controlled) is available to many species of birds to pick up as grit with resulting direct or indirect mortality. The voluntary transition is a choice for all of us to consider - continue as we are or start to change - are we conservationists or not?

    Conor

Most of use certainly are - but what happens when we find steel is bad ?

I shoot at rats at night as do many others with shotguns - what of the risk of ricochets ?

Im not against steel but becoming more unsure as time moves on
