  1. My spaniel never did any hide shooting before I got him just rough shooting. He started off steady for the first hour but became impatient to the point he would run through the net upon shooting. Whether I hit or missed the bird, correction would not stop him so I've had to peg him down. I'd fetch most of the birds myself & give him a couple of retrieves to hopefully teach him everything is not his to fetch. Hasn't bloody worked & he'll start yipping/whining loudly wanting to retrieve. To the point I have put him back in the car on occasion. He's been up & down when rough shooting while I'm trying to keep on top of him. Days he'll be steady as you like but some days going deaf, especially if a rabbit gets up. The lad I got him from said he normally does some rabbit pen work before the season starts so my fault. Think I'm going to have to seek assistance as I feel I've let the previous owner down in by my lack of experience. When I first got him he was a joy to work
  2. We've just noticed rats in the small wood we feed, gonna leave them until the seasons finished then hit them hard with the dogs & smoker
  3. Our farmer will not allow us to feed barley until the beasts are moved inside. Reckons the barley swells & can kill them so he told us at the start of the season. Beasts moved 2 weeks ago so we're fine for the rest of the season
  4. Mate has a 2005 Nissan Navara, it has 130k on the block but had a full engine rebuild & the necessary engine modifications 18k ago. Its silver in immaculate condition, leather interior, choice of wheels, has been chipped for better performance/mpg & is a cracking runner. Was using it for holidays in france twice a year but has bought a smaller motor. Never misses a beat....he wants £4000 for it
  5. No thanks MP, had one of those years ago who asked who we were every week for 8yrs when we done vermin control on a big estate.
  6. Spoke to the farmer, he said straight away he appreciated the effort we made to go find him & speak to him. He said he was in a bad mood that day also & we offered him a days shooting with us but although a nice gesture he said, he's too busy with the farm. We said we'd shoot further up the river, went to feed it & a dozen wigeon got up out of a flooded pool so hoping for a decent day this saturday
  7. Spoke to farmer & he said theres nothing to worry about & he's good friends with the man who was shouting. Turns out he has a pond just over the boundary, which we didnt know about. We've said we'll shoot/feed further down the river in future anyway to avoid any problems. Rather be on good terms with our neighbours, just a shame he hadn't approached us in a different manner in the fitst place

    Geese

Ok chaps. I'll get another 6 made then give them a bash
  9. No mate we had decoys on the small slack bit of water on the river which is on our land not his. Not sure if he has a pond or not as we have no intention of crossing the boundary. I just think his attitude was absolutely ****, had he asked us to call in to speak to him so he could explain what he meant fair enough. I'd happily invite him shooting with us as we were short of guns , thats if he hasn't already killed all our pheasants lol.

    Geese

I have painted them as Canadas & made them so the silhouette will work from above also with the wings fitting into the body section. How many would be a good start? I have made 6 so far but can make as many as I need at work

    Geese

Every time we've been on the shoot either work days or shooting this year we see hundreds of geese flighting over the land. We have been told they drop into our fields once they're flooded but have been busy at work making some decoys out of plywood wondered if anyone has any tips or think we're wasting our time as we've never shot geese before. Wanted to try the ply silhouettes before forking out on real decoys if necessary
  12. Sounds like a recent episode I experienced, good luck with the pond
  13. Our 2nd day after taking over the shoot this summer, still getting the lie of the land & an idea which way the birds fly. We had a good rake about the hedgerows & small coverts. Only 4 guns we couldn't cover the area we needed & missed a good few birds. We shot 8 pheasants, 1 partridge, 1 rabbit & the lab nailed a hare in cover. The river had flooded so we sat on the only bit of slack water we could find putting the decoys out before it got dark. I've never shot duck so didn't know what to expect, I honestly thought we'd blank. A group of wigeon came in & one was dropped. We heard a quad just across the boundary, I'm assuming he was a neighbouring farmer stood on his quad & started screaming at us saying we shouldn't be shooting here. We asked him what he meant as our map from the agent shows we were 150yds from the boundary. He shouted about a pond & sportsmanship then said he'll kill our ******* pheasants. Didn't have a clue what we had done but we intend to find out who he is & go speak to him. Never wanted bad relations with any neighbours so need to get to the bottom of it. Anyway I shot my first mallard & the other lads had 2 mallard & 3 wigeon. Not huge numbers but a nice mixed day & very enjoyable.
  14. We tried socks over pigeon decoy shells last weekend & they started coming in within 5mins of putting them out. Only the torrential rain ruined our day
  15. I'm sure he'll take £60.....
  16. Foxes will **** anywhere & run holes without using them. Its still fairly mild & they rarely use holes round here unless theres some hard weather or they're cubbing

Bad timing on the run up to xmas otherwise I'd have bought it
  18. Just an update for the doubters lol, it seems we are in a fortunate position. We are not expected to put birds down & can shoot what we want, we can't put feeders near the fields the keeper retains for dogging his partridge back. We had a walk round 2 weeks ago & put plenty of partridge up but we'll have to look at doing mini drives as they got up too far infront. We also put a decent number of pheasant up but won't start shooting them until end of Oct. Looks like decent numbers of duck on the river but we have to wait until the beasts are moved before we start feeding barley. It seems like the last lads didn't bother to put the time/work in, think we could have a decent season
  19. I'm looking for kennel floor paint, of the ones I've read up on the conditions required to set it off properly could be difficult in the cold/wet north of england. Seems more suited to indoor use but will look into bison
