Gordon Bennett, why all the conjecture, a poor woman has been shot at a clay ground.

We know very little else and far too many of you are guessing at what happened.

You are right tightchoke - the topic has morphed into basic gun safety at clay grounds!

    Gordon Bennett has been called

I don't disagree however that is not what many clay shooters do, I carry my semi via a sling over my shoulder and a breech plug fitted this way everyone can always see it is safe. If you carry a double open over your arm everyone can see it is safe, if a gun is a slip no one knows if it is safe or not and poor discipline adds fuel to the fire.

I will only slip a gun at a clay ground if it is very cold or they don’t have gun stands to allow me to warm hands for trigger and  safety catch .

  3. As a sport clay shooting if we stick to several simple and basic safety rules we can minimise the risks and to be fair I think most shooters do as these accidents are few and far between!

    1) guns should never be pointed at anything you don’t intend to shoot

    2) guns should be made safe ( broken or bolt drawn back ) while pointing in a safe direction

    3) ammunition is only loaded at the point you are ready to shoot

    4) safety catch of after final preparation and you are about to shout pull

The first gun I shot was my dad’s bolt action mosberg it was drilled into me that the bolt was removed when not in use and it was carried at all times barrel vertical ! I was about 12/13 I think

I was brought up shooting on keepers days at the end of the season

if we all follow safety first we can keep horrible incidents like this to nearly 0

Why require a gun is broken? It's no different to a semi or a pump in that without dismantling them, they can't be broken.

Mentioned in an earlier post over and under or side by side broken semi auto bolt drawn back preferably with a flag in but pointed to the sky if we shoot our semi autos we tend to make a point of getting one of the other guns in the group to check bolt is drawn or flag in before leaving the cage !

You’re quite right of course, but his generation were of the doctrine that you carried an empty shotgun in this manner between drives; I know of some who still do, including the ‘keeper of our syndicate who is only a couple of years older than me.
The only snag is, who knows it is empty? More than once I’ve said to our ‘keeper ‘if you’re sure it’s empty point it at your foot and pull the trigger’. Never once has he obliged.
    Weird eh?

Scully yep seen it and I come from a generation where shooting grouse between beaters on the line  was ok provided you did not pepper any of them -yes  I was one of the beaters .

this post is about a clay ground I happily have the luxury of participating in both disciplines ( not grouse shooting ) a closed gun should never be pointed at anyone regardless of clay or game .

Fingers  crossed the 19 year old gets over her injury!

  6. I agree ghe and if that gun was on our shoot I would ask the gun to be broken regardless of if it’s loaded or the the excuse of being the queens husband. But at least the gun is pointing to the ground and yes the older generation are in the “well I haven’t shot anybody yet ! “  but the accident here was at a clay ground no excuses .

another way of putting it is safety in clay shooting and out In the field requires us all to follow basic safety rules these accidents are few and far between but if we ignore the basics of gun safety those risks become unacceptable. In the case a 19 year old has been shot by a fellow shooter in a situation that should not have been allowed.

We all have a duty to ensure these incidents are very rare accidents!

Fair enough, you follow and insist upon correct safety procedures with the beginners who you instruct/supervise, nothing to criticise there . . .

But, in my experience, most of the unsafe gun handling comes from very experienced shooters who should know better and who, when pulled up over this, will never accept that they have done anything wrong.

The simple truth of the matter is that there can never be minor accidents with shotguns, shooting is only safe because it is potentially extremely dangerous, so everyone is watching everyone else like a hawk and acts as a safety officer when needed.

We don't know what happened here and probably never will, but it's very likely that the shooter had a gun that was loaded when it should have been empty, and that it was also pointed in an unsafe direction - two very dangerous practices that, for some reason, nobody else seems to have noticed!

Here's an example of unsafe gun handling from someone who should have known better . . .

  7. My thoughts go to the youngster and all at the club who had to deal with it.

We pulled a lad up at Coniston who swung the gun round so we were looking down the barrel to eject the emptied into the bin. Was very taken aback by us shouting at him to point a closed gun into the clay ground. He protested that he had shot 2 shots ! any gun should be broken and cartridge removed while the gun is pointing towards the safety of the shooting area  . No if or buts in my book. Almost first lesson of shooting!

in the case of a semi’s auto bolt drawn back and visual check of breach exit cage with barrel pointing upwards

Fingers crossed she pulls through I believe we all have a duty to promote safe gun handling and challenge those that fall bellow that safe standard . something that was backed up when we updated the coniston team to the events we witnessed!

  11. In my opinion Modern voting has shown that if candidates on both side are considered weak by those undecided middle ground they will turn there vote on a sound bite or headline often a minority or independent /  green or right wing . Because they see nothing worth voting for in two main parties and there elected leaders!

it has a term but I can’t remember it !

I blinked and mines 2.5yrvold now, chatting to Lloyd as need him to come beating but something about daddy day care hehe.. won't be long until he will have his side kick spotting for him.

My other one is the one who has just started beating with grandad second season ( flanking and holding in really but hey that how most of us start?) on our small shoot.

Youngest likes telling everyone who listens how good elevens’ are and that sometimes he’s allowed a nip of sloe gin !

he’s already getting gun safe with the .410 at the clay ground

It’s crazy that I still remember doing the same with my grandad nearly 50 years ago - the unique smell of a musty landrover, wet labour- and smouldering pipe with cherry tobacco!

enjoy being out beating and shooting but don’t miss em growing up !

  16. True Lloyd a  local care home provider has just converted their third or fourth huge property and it’s just about full !

as for the million pounds to invest not likley as local authority employee !

    how the little one ?

So are profits, but that’s what you get when you want private industry to run the care sector.

If you had millions of pounds to invest you simply need to have a very good level of return, especially when investing in an industry that’s got so much bother, red tape and risk.

Yes, I’m not sure it’s gone through yet, it was in the Government white paper.

As usual though the sneaky (insert swear words here) have done it to win votes and not help you, as the devil is in the detail.

My last reading of the paper made it apparent that they only counter a small part of the costs as “care” and classed the vast majority of your care home fees as “accommodation”.

So when you go into a care home costing £1600+ a week (like my great aunt just has) they’ll only class about £2-300 as care, therefore it’ll take ages to hit the cap, and you’ll keep paying for “accommodation” once you’ve hit the limit.

I just quickly found some info, here it is, looks like it starts from October 2023.

    https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/628ba6cad3bf7f1f487b7488/paying-for-your-care-a-lifetime-cap-on-care-costs-easy-read-v2-may2022.pdf

I believe this same proposal crashes Theresa May’s government.

Johnson pushed the legislation through as a bundle / package deal with a load of covid legislation and it hardly got any news coverage at all.

Blimy pushing legislation through on a bad news day who would have guessed it !

wages and energy bills in care homes are going through the roof ! Costs for care are only going to head upwards!
