  2. Well that was stunning. The point at which the image filled the screen and went to colour was jaw dropping. An incredible amount of work has gone into the restoration of the footage and the sound mixing was brilliant. The way they have smoothed our the frame rate digitally to avoid the sped up Charley Chaplin look we’re familar with is a technical marvel. A really well done production. ...BUT why was this tucked away on bbc2 with barely any promotion? It deserved a much larger audience. Sadly some folk probably aren’t interested and would rather watch X Factor. If you missed it I urge you to catch it on IPlayer, I think it’s only there for a week.
  3. I’m a web designer and In my professional opinion it’s very average looking and rather dull. It does nothing to make the sport look exciting. The home page is just a mass of text. There’s no use of block colour to break things up a bit and create a bit of contrast. Typography is also quite ugly. Overall not impressed.

    Super Man Flu

If people were a bit more careful with their hygiene then this flu epidemic would be under more control. I’ve seen people sneeze and cough into their hand and then proceed to shake hands with people! At this time of year when bugs are rife I don’t touch any door handles in public places bare handed, always wash my hands before eating and generally try my best to stay away from sickly people. The most annoying people are the ones that still come out of an evening and proclaim that they don’t feel well but thought they would come along anyway and spread their germs. Selfish.
  5. I see Ripple prices have crashed since last week.. https://www.express.co.uk/finance/city/902895/ripple-price-down-xrp-crashing-crypto-exchange i was close to investing last week and so glad i didn’t, a 50% loss in less than 7 days wouldn’t have been a great start to my first crypto investment dabble!
  6. Scum bag parents breed scum bag kids and then they go on to breed their own scum bag kids and so it goes on. I was in Tesco Express the other day and witnessed a couple of little ****s in hoodies trying to shoplift, could have only have been 13-14. The shop keeper threw them out, but they didn’t give a damn, zero respect. The parents probably have no idea what their ‘little angels’ are up to, probably too busy in the pub or sitting at home on their backsides. Some people really shouldn’t be allowed to procreate.
  7. Not that easy so I’ve heard. My brother looked into it but a real ball ache so gave up
  8. Don’t worry about it. I’ve used many different macs at work and at home for over 20 years and never once experienced virus issues or heard of anyone that has. Just make sure you regularly backup your data and forget about AV.
  9. This is a shame and a bit of a shock. Yes Uber has it’s problems and their ethics are questionable, but the times i’ve used the service it has been extremely efficient and very good value. The same can’t be said for Black cabs and the Underground. How about a tube service that runs beyond midnight (it’s 2017 ***!) or a better value pricing structure for black cab fares? I feel far safer using Uber than a clapped out minicab. The drivers i’ve had are very polite and their vehicles are immaculate. TfL and the cabbies are standing in the way of technological progress and will make life more difficult for a lot of Londoners, especially the lower paid workers that work anti social hours and need late night travel options. Uber do need to address their mistakes, but putting 40,000 drivers out of work seems like a harsh decision by TfL.
  10. Are you SURE you were watching GOT? All the things you describe couldn't be further from the truth. These episodes are some of the best directed TV you'll ever see. The writing and character development is also top drawer. I would start at S1 and give it another try. It took me a few episodes to get it, but then I was hooked. It is without doubt THE best television show ever made. I'll be sad when it's over.
  11. Finally got to see this in IMAX last night! An incredible cinematic experience. I urge anyone that wants to see this, DON’T wait to watch it on the small screen at home. This really is one of those films that needs to be seen on the biggest screen you can find. The cinematography is stunning, especially the aerial scenes. Never has a Spitfire been committed to film so beautifully. It’s an understated take on the war film genre, but all the better for it. Don’t go expecting a blood and guts Saving Private Ryan type of movie, this is not that type of war film. That’s not to say it’s not immersive, it really is. From start to finish I was on the edge of my seat, the Spitfire scenes are as close to being in the actual cockpit as you could imagine. I think it’s refreshing to finally see a hollywood WW2 movie from the British point of view. A really well made film that deserves all the plaudits it’s receiving.
  12. Apple have the right idea, this feature should be compulsory on all mobile phones. https://www.macrumors.com/2017/06/05/do-not-disturb-while-driving/ It’s a great idea, but it’s still down to the user to enable it. The idiots that text and chat whilst driving will just switch it off. At least Apple are trying to do something about it. Phone ‘notifications' have become a major distraction in our lives. Whilst driving they can cause you take your eyes off the road for only a few seconds, which is all it takes for an accident to occur.

  15. Lots of people earn far more than those in the emergency services, what do you suggest we do about it? Pay fireman £400,000 each a year? You can't compare those that work in the entertainment industry with those that work for public services.

    e-mail address

If you want to appear professional then don't use gmail or outlook email addresses. It makes it look like your business is too tight to spend money on a proper email address. For most businesses it's the main method of contact so do it properly, get a domain and a proper email address at that domain, it doesn't have to cost much. Get a decent IMAP account and it will sync across all your devices.

    so sad

Chavy families in restaurants all staring down at their iPhones is a common sight. The ever increasing decline of basic manners. Mobiles are banned at the dinning table for my family. Don't get me wrong my mobile is essential for business, but a lot of these people don't really need to be welded to their devices. It's almost turned into a security blanket for some.
  18. My daughter is 5 and I made the conscious decision to turn the news off this morning. She's very mature for her age but she doesn't need to know about all the horrible stuff in the world. I want to protect her childhood innocence for as long as possible. This mornings coverage with the guy describing horrific stabbings was just too much for young ears.
  19. Haven't shot for a while due to busy work commitments. Went online to look at prices as I need 1000 and was just shocked at how much prices have risen. Power Blues now £200 and Power Gold £220. That's a rise of about 15%. Even budget end Eley First and Gambore Velocity are £190+ You could pick those up for £155-160 just over a year ago. Is this Brexit in action already or were prices unrealsictally low and just couldn't be sustained? Seems the days of a slab sub £160 are truly over.
  20. I would take The Revenant and Hateful 8 anyday over the usual boring, brain dead, predictable Hollywood blockbusters that get churned out relentlessly. Yes both films are a bit long, but they are beautifully shot, well acted and feature some stunning set pieces. The opening battle scene in The Revenant is really well done. I agree that H8 could have done with some heavy editing, but the last act is classic Tarantino, incredibly tense and violent plus brilliant dialogue.
  21. I build websites for a living so come up against the website vs Facebook thing all the time. This probably doesn't apply to your particular organisation as you are not really selling a service, but any business that wants to achieve a decent online presence needs a website PLUS a Facebook page. If you want to generate serious traffic you need to reach out via every avenue you can. A FB page would work, but you risk alienating people that don't use or don't want to use FB. A simple website should do the job. Regarding SSL you don't need to pay for it. Some webhosts offer it free using the excellent 'Let's Encrypt' certifcate scheme.
  22. All sites that handle any personal information, passwords etc should really be HTTPS. PW really should upgrade, it's not expensive, in fact it can be done for free with some web hosts. In the future ALL sites will need to be secure, Google are pushing for it. I'm a web developer/designer so know all this boring stuff!
  23. There seems to be some resentment against the self-employed here. In the last year I have gone from employed to self employed to now limited company. I’m trying to be tax efficient and follow all the rules, but I don’t deal in cash and am not fiddling the system. Yes I may pay less tax than my paye comrades, but I’ve taken the risk to go self-employed. No sick pay, no holiday pay, no paternity pay, the stress and worry of not enough work coming in, running your own accounts etc. All these things are the downside of self employment, so for me there needs to be some reward for going down the working for yourself route. Given there are people that fiddle the system by dealing in cash and not declaring all their earnings, but they are a separate issue. I’m not earning huge money and i’m probably working a lot harder for it than I did when I was employed. A lot of my friends work for themselves and are all grafters often working evenings and weekends to keep the work coming in. The reason for them going self-employed wasn’t based purely on paying less tax, it was because they are all very good at what they do and have the balls and initiative to do it on their own. I think it’s very easy for those that have never worked for themselves to shake the stick at the fact we pay a bit less tax than them. True is has rewards, but it takes over your life. I’m not saying that the employed don’t work as hard, but it’s a totally different mindset. In my opinion the government are hitting the wrong people. They should be doing all they can to encourage people to start up on their own and not try and paint us as the tax dodging elite who have it so much better than the employed. These new businesses if successful will grow and possibly create new jobs. The bottom line is I believe that there should be some tax benefits to counter all the benefits we don’t receive.
  24. I started out as a freelance graphic designer and as the work load increased I took on a young lad to help out. I struck gold with this guy as he was one of the 'good' ones. As the business grew I employed more staff, but to be honest this is where things started to go downhill. I am a self confessed perfectionist, but unfortunately a lot of people I took on just weren't built that way. Sloppiness and general poor attention to detail meant I was spending too much time re-doing their work. I think when it's your business you have a different mind set that employees just don't share. Managing them was frustrating to the point of making me irritable, stressed and unhappy in my work. Anyway fast forward a few years and things have changed and now it's back to just me, on my own in my home studio, happier than ever. To be honest taking on staff is something I would never do again, it's more hassle than it's worth. Finding the good guys in my field is not easy, so now if I get busy I will outsource to reliable freelancers.
  25. Self employed graphic/web designer.
