  1. Then you move on to talk about fishing
  2. Into The Silence (about the first attempt on Everest) by Wade Davis has some interesting words from ex-soldiers (The book is sub-titled The Great War, Mallory and the Conquest of Everest, pp 23-37 The Somme) As I recall, without re-reading it, 1 was taken prisoner and was amazed to find German staff officers (red epualettes?) a 100 yards behind the lines, not miles like ours Another recruited a regiment from Canada (Newfoundlanders?) asked after them and was told that 'they were gone' Another, a surgeon, had won every medal bar the VC

  4. Yes at Gommecourt Wasn't a senior office reprimanded for "lack of fighting spirit?
  5. The Sherwood Foresters were badly affected, my great uncle died on 1/7/16 The home address on the war graves site is 2 miles from where most of my family still live, in South Derbyshire
  6. Anyone tried steel with damascus yet? Are we concluding that with the appropriate load, standard steel is just as safe for the gun and shooter as lead? Wasn't there a letter in Shooting Times recently mentioning that guns had been damaged on 1 of the 'try steel' days?

    Gunmark Royale

There are a few on Gun Trader and a nice 1 here https://www.cheshiregunroom.com/gunmark-sle-12g-shotgun
  8. There are some big-hearted people on here!
  9. Thanks John, it must have been Lucas I'll take some photographs to show the engraving, when my wife is out
  10. Some ex Purdey guys at the shooting ground agreed, it is heavier than 1 or 2 expected
  11. No marks that I can see and no visible sleeving line. LP 83 is stamped on the flats Thanks for the article John Someone at the shooting ground on Wednesday had a 1950s Purdey pigeon gun, he was showing me how good the engraving was on it, then he looked at mine, saying the engraving was likely done by Lutz (it sounded like) and added "and it's better than the engraving on mine"
  12. I though I'd share this as I used it on Wednesday, a 150 year old Purdey: originally damascus and non-rebounding hammers, taken-in for re-bounding hammers and steel barrels by the then owner, a reverend whose wife was a niece of the Prime Minister Now invisibly sleeved and marks showing London proof 1983, choked approx 1/8 and 1/4, with little cast and suits me as a lefty with a pad to exetend the stock to 15" The forend is push-rod and someone thought this a likely later addition
  13. I've used the Peak Angling Passport in the past
  14. No, and already back for repairs as the top spring went and there's an intermittent misfire on the left barrel I picked it up on Wednesday
  15. No 12 bore bought from WLSS, with a red case, quite expensive at over £13 for 25 with a 'bio' wad, actually "hydro" wad i've got the box and can take a photo
  16. I swapped my DT10 last week for an AYA 1 as I wanted something more robust (my perception) than my English Guns, also with 2 3/4 chambers and more open chokes (steel is coming) I was pleasantly surprised to find 65mm steel cartridges - Hull 24/4- that did very well in it compared to my usual 28/6 for game and 21/7.5 for clays So (and I'm sure i've missed a lot of posts on this) there's little issue with 65mm availabilty, it's just tight chokes that are problematic Otherwise we're good?
  17. If you look at Companies House there's a report from the liquidator in October

  19. Presumably Bignotti are the makers, from the same area in Italy where Beretta originate, Gardone VT Armi is arms in Italian
  20. And Stonehenge Arms have 2 very similar guns, both Austrian, 1 branded Anton Sodia, the other just Ferlach, the latter with an almost identical forend
  21. Hi All Does anyone know how to refurb Potashnick stocks? I've posted details elsewhere as a separate topic (thinking I was posting under SBS) Thanks Kevin
  22. Hi All I bought a William Powell with lift up lever and stock extension, good barrels and the stock with a few water marks "that can be oiled out" and got a bit of money off for that reason. Stupidly I looked at the barrels in the daylight outside the shop and only looked at the stock inside the shop, though I did think the extension match was very good The finish is Potashnick I'm told so some kind of antique wood matching; there still is a Cornfield Potashnick site offering the service. How do I repair the water damage without going for the same kind of finish? As someone said the extension could be very cheap wood disguised by the finish I'll post a photo after my virtual FAO visit later Apparently West London Shooting School used to have a Potashnick specialist on site so that a scratched Purdey could be sorted out quickly Thanks Kevin
