  1. Yes the Republic. Not wanting to hijack the original posters thread - Sorry. Rod licence , long time ago now the system if you can call it that in place now is nearly worse . Shooting Legislation , over here I could write for a week on the subject and still have issues unsaid. Its all about stopping field sports now , the Green party got into government and are being left manage , read disasemble , the shooting and hunting sports . The NARGC, similar to your BASC are in most peoples view not doing enough to counter them , having said that I can understand where they are with it to some degree as the Minister has not nor have any officials met with the shooting lobby to discuss any of the proposed changes even though they said they would do so at least twice. As a 3 party Gov. here right now the other 2 parties are hiding and not trying to upset the greens letting them get away with their new plans . The Garda - Police make it harder and harder to get a new licence or even renew a licence each time with Local conditions imposed at Superintenadnt level , Im being nice using the terms Im using . The last species taken off the quarry list was the Curlew if I remember correctly and while nobody wants to see the Curlew die out here there was no discussion with rank and file shooters at the time , Im shooting the Coastline for just over 50 years and I usually shot just 1 or 2 Curlews a year I can well imagine that those who discussed its removal never shot one in their life. My point is there was No Discussion then with me or others and there is no discussion now either , I dont have pheasant shooting or good woodcock shooting to fall back on and anway I prefer coastal fowling and Snipe shooting . Shooters are divided here in many factions and will always be I think. In the past few years there has been a clamour for bag returns by the shooting body and of late from the Parks and wildlife service to see what is being shot out there . Nobody asked me that 50 years ago and if they asked me today I could tell them what I shot then as I always kept a diary of what I put in the bag - I even have them all scanned into the pc to. I dont see the same protests as there was for the fishing licence issue with this current situation . They were cute enough to before the season they said there would be changes , but they never said what species in case people went out and hammered them as with woodcock I know a few yung lads who havenever shot one and this year thats all they are after , but they are scarce right down south here , with big bags being shot up the country native or non native to me those bags are excessive , my opinion I wouldnt do it and preety soon nobody will be able to shoot a brace . Putting a bag limit in place wont work here with the mindset of the law aplies to others and not to me. So two weeks ago I most likely shot my last Jack snipe , usually take one or two a year let the rest pass on as I did last week , common snipe I shoot away and still this could be my last season here for that to and the worst part is I dont know if that is so or not , nobody will tell me nobody will ask me just the Minister mouthing off and the rumour on the boreen again , no Doubt as with the Curlew I shall be the last to know again , from what the Talk is at the mo , Teal and Wegion is all that will be left to shoot here. I know of people not buying dogs or trading in guns on account of the changes hanging over us here but I will not let them spoil my xmas shooting with m son when he is home for the hols , to those who have read this far , compliments of the season and enjoy your days in the field over the hols , cheers.
  2. Oh , well next years going to be interesting for us Fowlers here. Feb 15 th next Non Toxic regulations due to kick in for us so thats Shock no 1. Shock no 2 is that Parks and Wildlife Minister here now in our Rainbow Government is a Greenie and he has let it be known that there will be changes to the Open Seasons order next year. The word on boreen to the slob is that from the 23 - 24 season , Jack Snipe , Common Snipe , Woodcock , Pintail , Pochard possibly even Mallard and others will be taken off the list of shootable quarry. There is a large discrepency in the counts of Mallard for one that have been counted as opposed to being shot , one figure says that there are no more than 18,000 mallard in the whole country whne the bag returns that were sent in were in excess of that figure . Suffice to say that next year here shooters face much uncertainty.
  3. Im afraid mere mortals such as myself cant get near the place , north and south slob as you know Im sure . South is all private access I beleive and the North side has the sanctuary areas with maybe just a small area the locals shoot. People down there wont even tell you about it when you ask them where you can get in. A few months ago there was a Gang of Hare coursing poachers chased across slob marshes there , they got away but Extra Police and Wildlife Ranger eyes Gaze into the mist much more often of late. Enjoy your invite , you are a very lucky man....
  4. Hi, you can get by with a small amount of gear to start then build it from there , the thing is you are best off taking a few trips with a club member to see if it is what you want to do. So apart from the gun and carts , to start , at least thigh waders or a strong waterproof pants and wellies , a decent waterproof jacket low viz , a head torch , a waterproof pouch for your phone and car keys , a face covering , nothing scares the ducks like a white face pointing skywards , gloves and a Decent back pack . On a long hike in a poor pack is a killer . You can sort decoys once you know if it is something you want to do . Oh and have a spare set of clothes in the car and a snack of course. Good luck and enjoy.
  5. https://tronspace.com/price-list down the list near the end - he has changed the site since I was last here and it was clear he would make them up to your wishes , however I am not sure of shipping to UK which is why I made up my own .
  6. There was a site selling beretta shims made to order in the USA I was looking for more cast off myself , so I bought a 2nd set of shims and modified the one I needed myself by filing away one side - I needed more cast off so it was the right side of the shim that was sanded , re fitted tested on a few boxes at 35 - 50 yds , need a touch more took it out sanded again and though I say it myself I have had quite a season just gone bye. . Tip , if you cannot find any spare shims get a piece of plastic , say a bottle or a large detergent container , remove your butt plate , trace out the stock size cut out a few templates and then cut that back to push the gun in the direction you want , if you put it all in there you have only increased the LOP very slightly , you can insert more than one piece and if you wish slip a piece in by the shim , yes I have tried all these things , it worked for me . If I find a link for the shims I will post it . good luck.
  7. I went 26 in also on an A400 , with an ext choke and shoots fine even Way Out there .
  8. I have clipped them right down but as you can see still to large , thats 4K , if I run them through another piece of software I could reduce the file size which would downgrade the image quality . I will upload 2 clips to Y T and give you a link when they are up . Just a few things about the video footage , at 4K you need a fairly good pc to run and edit those clips and they do eat storage - also shotkam lightly zoomed in image V the rest , well in Post you can with good software zoom in after the fact so to speak , that software is costly. One in good light , one in grey light , both not in close but you get the idea. Ah the site has embedded the vids - all birds were retrieved .
  9. the Sony FDR-X3000 4K - it has built in steady shot but as with any action cam worn rather than gun mounted the Body dampens out movements while walking to - just try not to be to jerky moving your head around , it becomes second nature in no time . Will cut out a few snippets of K shots and try and upload em in a bit .
  10. When it comes to cameras or binos any optical equipment , good glass aint cheap . Yes theres more to a camera than glass .I have used several vid cams on my gun and few work well . A few things to remember , if you fit a cam to a gun and you want to film your dog on a retrieve , or your buddy talking a shot , guess where your gun is pointed ?. There are few well fitting attachments to a gun barrel for a camera such as a GO pro and after a few shots mine would work lose and the recoil would flip it off shot and anyway the field of view of a g p is too wide to see a bird hit well at say 40 yds . You can get after market lens to zoom in but your field of view is then much narrower But worse than that camera shake and movement is magnified in a norrow FOV ,. My set up is a head mounted Sony 4k cam which has the best low light and image for what I want . Cheap cameras are a waste of time , the shotkam is the top of the line for a gun mounted camera , perhaps my next purchase but I think there is a new one one , gen 4 ?, due later this year - promotion on at the mo 50 bucks of for Fathers day I see. There is one other option and that is , Drones - the small drone cameras now for 100 quid have stunning footage quality , the race drones , not a go pro fitted to a toy one or such , I have one and used to have it taped to my barrel with a rubber strip buffer , but I use that out in front now close to my decoys and have great footage from it . so my choice is , gun mounted Shotkam , head mounted Sony - or to start , gun mounted a cheaper older go pro or a drone cam , RUN CAM I use , . I have footage back to 2009 and I am glad I got started in it for sure . Any questions feel free to ask , cheers .

    Snipe

As I am sure all of you know Jacks will sit much tighter than a common Snipe often getting up right at the boot tip , then the flight is usually a loop up and over away from the shooter , perhaps slightly left or right only to land again not to far off and the common barrels away at speed jinking left right like a North Korean missile in fail mode . We can shoot both here but these days I only shoot 1 Jack a year and depending on how the season goes up to 50 commons. A few seasons back we had an influx of Jacks and I had 18 of them in the bag , the normal ratio here would be about 1 jack to 7 or 8 commons met on the marsh . In the hand they are much smaller and lighter and with a fabulous Purple blue color on the rump so there should be no id issues . That purple tinge does fade after a bit. The pic is from 30 or so years ago 2 jacks on the right, an hour on the marsh after snipe so that ratio is also high , the gun is a Fabarm euro 3 long gone to the scrap man. Thorburn has 2 nice paintings of Snipe which I will upload shortly , you can clearly see the differences in those.
  13. Books , lack of space and that terror of old books , Foxing - the mold on the page type. I gave away most of my books and it was hard to find anybody who wanted them , kept some though . The Web has its uses and what follows is one of them . Sometime back I started looking for Col Hawkers Books and RPG and other fowlers books and found a few sites that had these books online and available to download . Long story short I now have close to 400 books on all shooting and fishing subjects from the 1800s , on my I pad , many have superb illustrations of our quarry , I love the old art works . So for those with little space or wanting a different read dive into the link below , all Free though for some books to read you will need to register . A few tips , on the bottom of the page you will find associated recommendations - also follow the publishers , co authors link to other relevant books . One last tip , a lot of those books had several editions which can vary a lot and also some have several scannings one of which might be a cleaner book to read . So Stanley Duncans book The Complete Wildfowler you will find here , Enjoy , hopefully it will shorten the winter for some , https://archive.org/search.php?query=PUNT GUNS&sin=TXT
  14. Hi. I have owned 2 Camo Berettas, 1 Max 4 and 1 Marsh optifade . Marsh was a great pattern , as for how it fared on the Coast well as it wore off underneath is a plain White base plastic parts - needles to say doesnt look nice after a few seasons 2 - 3 and I looked after mine . When I did try to trade it in there was Zero demand for it , I use a Timber stocked A400 now . If you really need a Plastic gun , get a black one , the you can get some good quality camo Tape and make it any colour you want there are slip on camo sleeves made to measure for a few Semi autos , I would use tape easy on easy off . My 2 p.
  15. I have both the PASSING and UFO for a Beretta A400. UFO , is very tight to the point that I do not use it at all , Passing is always in my gun on the foreshore , Quarter inland . By the way the passing gets loose after a couple of Bangs . My 2p worth .
