  1. Hi all, hoping to do some beating for the first time this season and drag my boy out (and hopefully part him with a screen!) Just wondered if anyone has any decent clothing to get him kitted out? I've bought waterproof trousers before but he managed to catch them on barbed wire on their first outing, so looking for slightly tougher stuff. The trousers I spotted in Decathlon have gone out of stock. I'm not keen to be spending £30-50 on a pair of trousers that he'll grow out of in months!
  2. Hi all, does anyone know if the next shoot at Almshoebury is on the 1st (first Sunday of the month) or on the 2nd? I'm sure someone mentioned it was the 2nd, but I've not caught up with them to confirm.
  3. To follow up on Buze's original comment, it would only take a quick copy and paste into each of these new posts with the correct information to make the invitation seem much more welcoming. As Sian found, trying to go out on her own to find the accurate directions etc. isn't easy. Also, if the correct information is here on the posts that are repeated, then there's more chance of googling to find the right details. Might increase turnout
  4. Hi all, My lovely lady and I are starting to look more seriously about getting our cocker pup. One thing I hadn't maybe considered was timing with regards to litters. Someone mentioned that most good working dogs will be working through the season, and as such maybe wouldn't be having litters. Also someone else mentioned that a lot of people prefer to have pups for the summer to make life easier for toilet/basic training etc. given the longer daylight hours. Does anyone have any views or advice regarding this at all? Also, if anyone has any suggestions of recommended or reputable breeders, we'd welcome them, we're based in North Herts. Dog would be predominantly a pet, but I'm looking to train them even though I don't shoot as much as I'd like.
  5. One thing I found when taking my Lanber Sporting Deluxe out for the first time when still very new, was that my mount wasn't solid enough to allow the inertia block trigger mechanism to kick over correctly. I'd fire the first shot, and then nothing for the second. Once I was mounting correctly all was fine.
  6. Hi all, looking for a few Saturdays beating over the coming season. Newbie beater if someone wouldn't mind that, but looking to get outside and enjoy a decent day's craic with likeminded people, and meet some more people in the community. I'm not looking for shooting at the end of it, but the experience enough would be great. Unfortunately arrangements with my son and life in general wouldn't mean it couldn't be every Saturday, however if there's an opportunity here and there I'd like to give it a go. Live in Stotfold, so areas around there would be great, although most of Herts/some of Beds is doable.
  7. Full disclosure, this is my cousin's place down in East Sussex, but even I think it's quite lovely. I've not glamped down there (only in our tent in the fields with my son a few times) but it seems to get great reviews. They've Safari tents, Bell tents, and the cabin in the woods that featured on George Clarke's Amazing Spaces. (the one that he 'built' even though the Will Hardie basically designed it and his guys built it) http://dernwoodfarm.co.uk/ Also just been recently awarded a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor. Not too far from Brighton or Lewes if you wanted to drive back that way too.
  8. Where was the shoot in Bedfordshire? Contemplating one of the simulated days at AGL, only £200. Wonder if there's many others about. The good lady saw the article in the BASC magazine about sim days at Highclere that she quite fancies.
  9. Great to meet you too Michel. Thanks for being so friendly and taking me round a new ground. Quite easy to rattle through the cartridges in the Cow Shed! I'd never shot anything really regimented before, normally I just rock up and and shoot whatever I fancy, so it was a nice, different experience. Glad your lady had a good time, and shot well at Stand 4. That overhead from behind tower was tricky from a few of the stands. Thanks everyone for the tips. Like Michel and I were discussing, it's very refreshing to find a hobby/sport where everyone is absolutely friendly, encouraging and welcoming.
  10. And to show a bit of contrast, my lovely lady had put in her application about 3 and bits months ago, had a call on Monday to arrange her visit, a 20 min chat on Thursday afternoon, and picked up her licence Friday lunchtime. Herts/Beds.
  11. Sounds good. My lady is looking forward to her Bun club outing, and I'll have about 4 hours to kill. Thanks for all the comments, and I'll keep an eye out for you two Buze, I'm the dark haired guy with stubble and glasses. Have a good day's shooting everyone, Paul
  12. Ah, thanks for the tip about the non-licenced shooter. I'll try and put him off from coming along. Do I still need a safety check myself before I can shoot too then? Do they prefer people to book in ahead for it or is it a quick check to make sure you're safe? Thanks again for the heads up, and anywhere that serves cake is fine by me.
  13. Hi all, My better half is going along to the West London Shooting School on Saturday for the Ladies Shooting Day. After speaking to Terry Bakerboy who's been coaching her, he suggested that I try AC Sporting Targets just next door to kill some time while I wait for her. I may be on my own, or possibly taking friend of a friend round with me, but just wondered if anyone else is out there and wanted to catch up possibly? I've not shot there before so looking forward to checking out a new ground.

  15. Does it make me sad that I watched the bit where he was firing from the passenger seat and wondered where his eye protection was? I don't know how much of those clays are left once they explode?
