Almost akin to politicians        but then is this whole issue not founded in politics rather than any sincere concern for partridge and pheasant chicks. Otherwise we would be spending our time creating the habitat for chicks to thrive ,turning our backs on releasing birds and enjoying casual low bag walked up days. There would be no worries about disposal of birds we would eat them all ourselves and as a consequence their comparative scarcity would see them achieve their true value on the market.I find it hard to fathom this seeming concern for the welfare of individual chicks from some  when commercial shooting will see hundreds of thousands of birds reared and shot ,birds that were obviously chicks earlier in the year ,and all this by the very shooting industry that BASC is keen to represent , protect and promote. The hard fact is that it is the need for excess that is the driver and while people are willing to pay large sums of money to shoot ever more birds in a day that need will be serviced and BASC will be there as the political wing of that industry. I wonder what Stanley Duncan would make of his WAGBI now ?

What negotiation is there to be had with a terror state? Trumps commitment to ending the war is simply to give in to Russia demands by acceding territory.

Its a 'terror state' that sits on the UN security council ?
Why dont they kick them out and blast them out of existence ?

    Mike Johnson rather than Pence.

Johnson, a Louisiana Republican who ascended to the speakership after the ousting of Kevin McCarthy in October, has long pledged to put forward a bill to approve further rounds of military aid to Ukraine in its ongoing war against Russia. Such a bill has been routinely advocated for by President Joe Biden, with Ukrainian leaders warning that they will lose the war without it.

The matter has faced strong headwinds, however, in the bitterly divided Republican House caucus, with further-right members like Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia strongly opposing any continued funding for Ukraine, and others wanting to hold such funding back until stricter U.S.-Mexico border laws can be passed. Johnson has been seen in some corners as stalling on aid in order to protect his position, considering that Greene has threatened to put forward a motion to vacate the speakership if he moves forward with Ukraine aid.

On Friday, Julia Davis, founder of the Russia Media Monitor watchdog group, shared a clip from one of the Moscow's state-run news programs, in which pundits touched on a planned meeting between Johnson and former President Donald Trump at the latter's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, with one guest suggesting that Trump's influence could be the deciding factor in the fate of further aid to Ukraine.

So hes a Russian plant , like Trump ,because a journo says so ?

By 'Biden on the other hand' I presume you refer to the Kremlin agent and serial liar 'Smirnov'  lying to the FBI about a link to Biden and Ukraine. Allegations at the heart of the Republican impeachment demand and his subsequent imprisonment.

Funny how all Bidens (and his sons) accusers are all liars, and all Trumps accusers are telling the truth ?

Despite hard evidence to the contrary.

Its actually from 2 years ago.
Conors comment about progress just made me think about the BASC stance over the years, even Swifty at one point was opposed to lead bans, then came LAG , somehow it morphed into this anti lead agenda that split BASC , and ended up with them fighting against LAG, and winning in 2016, on the basis that proof was needed before lead could be considered for restriction.
Then in 2020 , with no real new evidence, BASC appeared to turn away from this core mentality, and that lead was indeed 'toxic' and thats where we are today.
It makes you wonder how these people have such conviction, then suddenly change their minds...

I’m assuming it’s lost on you that the reason that chick survival is so important is in order that they can be shot when the season opens on September 1st. Will it be £40 ,£50 or more per bird to shoot this coming season ? so valuable stock to be lost to lead poisoning. I see where you are coming from.

A shrewd observation, one that applies to all these 'at risk' from lead poisoning birds that no one seems able to find.

Before the voluntary transition away from lead shot and single use plastics for live quarry started in 2020 any mention of the research into the risks from lead shot posted by any member on this forum would have been quickly shot down in flames. Sure, there are differences of opinion on the extent of the various evidenced risks and whether any action is needed, but most of us are no longer in denial mode about the evidenced risks - ie. the possibility of birds getting poisoned from eating lead shot as grit is no longer denied. That is progress.

Hes not even a member of the senate or house of reps, Ill think youll find the Biden administration could easily get past some military aid for Ukraine, they choose not to , as they will never get that investment back, so just blame the GOP for it.

Russia and NATO both gave assurances to Ukraine that they would be looked after if they 'gave up' the nukes.
But lets look at it rationally, Ukraine was never going to allowed to keep those nukes, the nuke club is pretty exclusive, with only a handful of states allowed to have them, even Israel doesnt admit to having them (but it does) because its never been given permission by well , whoevers in charge of nuke licences :drinks:

What value having an untrustworthy ally like the US?

I never realised you thought of the US like that, would you care to explain the reasoning ?

Im not necessarily disagreeing with you, personally I think the US would use whatever leverage and resources from us, or anyone else, for their own benefit, any day of the week, but we do have ancestral ties to them, which transcend most other countries.

For my part, Iran are playing a clever but dangerous game of chess with Israel.
To elaborate, Israeli defence (and offense) is based on hi tech, high cost weaponry, and while Iran does have some hi tech stuff, its based more on low tech, high volume.
Its said that Israel spent over a billion dollars defending itself from the Iranian attack of some 200 drones and missiles, its also said that Iran could have as many as 20,000 shahed drones, and an unknown number of cruise and ballistic missiles.
Israel claims to have shot down 99% of the inbound threats, so a rough calculation means that 2 got through , but caused minimal damage, yet I saw a video that showed 3 missiles striking roughly the same place within a minute ?
Claims aside, if this escalates, Israel is an an economic loser, even it it broadly 'wins' , and while no land invasion is technically possible from either side, the land areas of the 2 sides are pretty disproportionate , there are just more places where Iran could hide launch sites ect.
This creates a huge problem for the US , its already heavily involved in Ukraine, with Zelensky screaming for Patriot batteries and missiles (at 4 million dollars a pop, and billions for the battery) Israel does have some home grown air defence like iron dome, but if this barrage from Iran continues , those batteries could be easily depleted.
China , a close ally of Iran, casts its beady eye on Taiwan, again needing air defence and fighters, (which even now , could not stand up to a proper Chinese attack), could feasibly end up fighting 3 proxy wars at once.
Does it have the capacity to do this, I dont believe it does.

I think if it came to a choice of who to support, the US would choose Israel over the other two, at least they would get some payment for it.
Which leaves the other two in a leaky boat with no paddle, and thats why the US will be desperate to convince Israel to bide its time, and not escalate.
Will they listen, because they certainly havent listened over Gaza.

I began researching this bird in 1991, working closely with the National Parks and Wildlife Service and Board na Mona. Together we conducted research into the population dynamics of the remaining birds and identified the requirements of the population in an Irish context. With the support of several state and semi-state bodies we successfully plucked the species from the jaws of extinction due to the lead minefields in the area, increasing the population from a low of 24 birds to almost 1,000 birds in 2011. It is everyone's choice whether to move away from lead shot during the voluntary transition. It is voluntary.

This is the bit that beggars belief.
Its only 'voluntary' until shooting organisation supported legislation comes in, that outlaws the use of lead shot in all aspects, and after that, all lead based projectiles to be banned.
This isnt a conspiracy, its the 2021 HSE proposal, and BASCs stance is that lead in shooting is toxic

At the moment , it does appear that only lead shot for live quarry and clay targets will be up for the chop, but once its established thinking that lead from shooting is 'bad' (except for police and military use) and Packham et al have finished celebrating their 'victory' , the next campaign can start on rifle bullets.
Did BASC think this through when they decided to invest hundreds of thousands of members money into the BGA ?
Will it be worth destroying the shooting industry as a whole, just so BASC can preserve their small part of it ?

Lets be clear, BASC are not the voice of shooting, the people who shoot , and their supporters, are the voice.
To minimise those numbers, is to minimise the voice, in an already minority driven pastime and industry, this allows an easier foe to be vanquished by the anti shooting lobby.
The question Ive posed before , is what gave BASC the right to speak for everyone who shoots, when it didnt even give its own membership a vote ?

    'BASC council decided'

    'BASC doesnt work like that'

Imagine the NRA in the US , with millions of members, getting a communique that the NRA council was now going to vote to repeal the 2nd amdt , and was also going to honour a long time lobbyist for the banning of firearms ?
No vote, no consultation , what would you think happened, a conspiracy ?

Very lightly used gun, I have the SWAT version, and among all the black rifles Ive used in 22lr , I consider these the best , with a proper barrel, cycles anything, and excellent construction.

Its the later version with the slightly thinner rear folding stock, comes with a 50 rnd drum mag thats virtually brand new, 2 STANAG  style 25 rnd mags, and the original 25 rnd Black dog mag.
It has an excellent 1-6x Discovery ED LVPO scope, that is less than a year old , a bipod, and a Wildcat Panther moderator.

There is some ammo too if you can collect, located in Nottingham.
    Price is £800 ono

Actually, there was one new study in that search - from Scotland. If you spot others do let me know.

Incidence of lead ingestion in managed goose populations and the efficacy of imposed restrictions on the use of lead shot

    https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/ibi.13210

Having read that study, what does it actually tell us ?
Many birds having been shot with lead , and an extremely low incidence of 'poisoning' if any actually killed by it , rather than the incidence of them actually being killed by being shot !
If we are trying to protect the birds, why are they being shot ?

The study then adds that numbers of birds are recovering, which is great, but this graph explains why.

Yes. BASC is opposed to any further regulation on the use of lead ammunition in the UK.

Yet you fully support a transition away from lead, and have declared lead in all shooting sports 'toxic'

There is clear evidence that lead shot poses a risk to a wide range of bird species in terrestrial habitats and a voluntary move away from lead shot for live quarry shooting with shotguns is reducing these risks.

There isnt clear evidence, and the voluntary move from lead is clearly making very little difference, but if you keep saying it , maybe it will come true ?

1 hour ago, Conor O'Gorman said:

The shooting sector must be allowed time to develop non-lead shotgun ammunition due to a world shortage of components and the need for manufacturers and assemblers to source new machinery to produce lead shot alternatives and biodegradable wads for all shotgun calibres.

Is BASC so powerful that they MUST follow your lead ?

This ^^^^  is what I and most of the game shooters I know believe. None of whom are currently BASC members but all were before this !!!

Conors response to Scully (a link to a BASC blog page as per usual, rather than just answering the damn question) was to point out the harm to some birds who ingest lead shot, thats why they apparently proposed the 'voluntary' phase out.
In reality BASC is seeking to protect its investments in large (expensive) shoots, using the game meat excuse.

BASC is a business, protecting its future markets and profits, people need to stop believing its about protecting us mere mortals, or our shooting interests.
The  proof of this is quite apparent.

  15. 26 minutes ago, enfieldspares said:

Cynics would say it was because BASC seeking to defend commercial big bag shooting where the birds are little more than feather bearing clay pigeons made a massive investment in the then British Game Alliance.

This BGA being an attempt to defend big bag days on the basis that they were "harvesting" game for the food chain. Which as such as Waitrose decided not to sell game shot with lead caused an problem. Also ditto if exporting to the EU post-Brexit.

If the game couldn't be sold as supermarkets didn't want lead shot birds and the bag was so  excessive that it could never all be given to beaters, pickers-up and guns then what to do? Dump it? That was then the source of lurid pictures of piles of birds being ploughed in to ditches.

So who benefits ("cui bono" as the Romans said) is the answer. Who benefits is the big bag commercial shoots who to deflect criticism that the birds were "harvested" and not just being used as feather bearing clay pigeons led to the BGA an that, the BGA, led to the lead ban proposal.

For nowhere does this benefit the casual pigeon shooter protecting crops nor the small family or syndicate shoot were all the game is distributed between beaters, pickers-up and guns with never any surplus left over. And it certainly doesn't benefit the person shooting squirrels or carrion with lead shot.

    Excellent post.
'Big bag shoots' or as I refer to them 'high return shoots'  are where the money is, and BASC has vested interests in making sure these shoots continue unhindered, despite any lead ban.
These shoots and game days garner very high fees , the birds are , as you say , feathered clay pigeons , with the general public viewing the sport as cruel.
So how to silence these critics ?
They are 'harvesting' meat of course !

So BASC heavily invest in the BGA , essentially taking it over, and using it as an excuse to continue operations for its high value members, with a proviso that we must all start using lead free shot.
This has a err.. Double barrelled effect, it keeps them legit, and with a 'good reason' and the smaller shooters, clay shooters and pigeon men will dissipate in numbers, making the sport more exclusive to their preferred customer (The ones with lots of money to spend)
The rest of us can be thrown under the bus.

Your own research on this from some years ago is very illuminating.

    Voluntarily

    Ok, open question.

When I started shooting relatively recently compared to others, a plaswad ban was high on the agenda and talks in circles. It's now pretty much gone quiet. Is this to allow a voluntary transition to steel first, then plaswad will hit the radar once a suitable replacement to fibre works, that's affordable?

First off , you cant use traditional fibre wads with steel shot , it has to be an enclosed cup , so that steel doesnt contact the barrel, the 'norm' (for steel) is a plaswad.
There are products that are coming out using cardboard wads , or biodegradable plaswads, the effective biodegradability and performance , is questionable.

BASC are committed to the removal of traditional plastic wads (non biodegradable) which is commendable, the cost of these alternatives seems excessive at the moment.

If it were my decision, plastic wads would have been first on the agenda, not lead shot, the negative effect to the environment from microplastics, and animals ingesting plaswads is undeniable, the negative effect of birds ingesting lead shot is somewhat hazy, despite claims of 'studies' carried out by (usually) green or anti shooting lobbies.
Another thing I always find 'interesting' especially where the shooting orgs are concerned, is their apparent hand wringing over the trifling number of 'possible' birds harmed by ingestion of lead shot, when they fully support the ingestion of lead shot at high velocity ?

There is a very strong possibility that once the lead ban comes into effect for shot, lead for other firearms use will be the next target, and plastics involved in any shooting along with it.
