  3. Hi and welcome from a fellow Hertfordshire member
  4. Recently purchased my first decoys, 18 flocked shells from UK Shoot Warehouse. They look fine, but I notice the wing and neck bar is pretty faint. When I see real wood pigeons the bars and extremely prominent, white and visible from a long way off. Do you suggest I paint these so they stand out? What's the thinking with this and if so what do you use to paint them?
  5. I'm looking to shoot pigeons on the rape tomorrow for the first time alone. My question is, if I head out in the morning to the farm which has three fields of rape and after a bit of reconnaissance I don't see pigeons feeding on the rape, is it a waste of time setting up? I have decoys, but I don't yet have a flapper or rotary so obviously there will not be much movement to get the birds attention! Whats the general rule with this, setup where they are feeding and if no sign then forget it?
  6. Well I purchased a Beretta Ultralight 12 gauge today. Got a great deal from a private seller. Will see how I get on with that. It's funny, 2 months ago I didn't own a shotgun, now I have a 410, a 20g and a 12g. Must stop now!
  7. Well I'm not gay, but I do shoot one armed so the lighter 20 gauge helps a lot on a days shooting. I will buy myself a 12 gauge this week then I can try both side by side and compare properly.
  8. I'm new to shotguns which is why I'm asking this type of question. I recently bought myself a 20g Silver Pigeon 1 and I love it. I'm shooting either No6 25s or No6 28g. My question is, where is the advantage in going to 12gauge? I guess it must be the fact you can use 30g plus cartridges? Am I right in thinking a 6 28g 70mm cartridge in 20bore will be the same as 6 28g 70mm cartridge in 12bore? I mean I guess they hold the same amount of shot so there would be no difference?
  9. As a newbie I have a couple of questions with regards to roost shooting. I get the concept, but wanted a few pointers. Do pigeons tend to use the same trees, so for example looking for signs of droppings etc would be a good thing to do? Is the idea to get yourself hidden in the trees and pick them off coming to land in the tree and maybe flying across the open field in to the tree line? I'm guessing a good time is just before the sun starts going down? Any titbits of advice would be appreciated.
  10. Is the idea you always freeze a couple and bring them out the night before to thaw and use on the magnet or flapper?
  11. Just about to purchase a Turbo Flapper from A1 but also wanted a decoy pigeon I could put on it until I shoot a real one. Are they available anywhere as I couldn't see anything on the A1 site?
  12. Starting out and need to get a basic setup of decoys. I'm looking at either these flocked: http://www.a1decoy.co.uk/flocked-pigeon-decoy-shell-90-p.asp Or these HD: http://www.a1decoy.co.uk/plastic-pigeon-shell-decoys-hd-802-p.asp I fancied flocked as I thought there would be less reflection, but the one in the picture doesn't look that good! Any recommendations? And can you mix types in your pattern? For example could I put out 6 FUDs with 10 shell decoys? I hear A1 offer a discount to PW members…anyone know the code?
  13. I have a few hours free tomorrow morning so thought I may go out for a wonder on a few bits of farmland I have access to. Thing is, as a newbie I don't have decoys and all the equipment yet. I have booked on the BASC course in two weeks an 'Introduction to Woodpigeons' and I don't want to rush out buying anything before I have taken some good advice. Anyway, my question is, is it worth a general stroll to try picking off the odd woody? I guess anytime outside with a gun is good and it will give me chance to check out some land for flight paths, roosting spots etc.
