  5. Yes! I was there 2 weekends ago and Had a bit of a nightmare! decided to err on the side of caution and took up my other sbs, well the trigger guard snapped where the action and stock meet so that ended up back in the car after 1 drive. Then the spare I used was about 3” too short on the second drive and by the time I’d sourced some black tape and robbed the butt pad from the other gun for the afternoon I was on the quiet pegs. wish I’d just stuck with what I know as after seeing the birds There was nothing I saw that I thought would have been out of range compared to what I usually shoot. the main difference was instead of being a drive of average birds with occasional higher birds, the majority of birds in the drives where what would be the good stuff at home with some crackers thrown in for good measure. so basically… stick by your guns! (Pun intended)

  8. No doubt that’s the reason, but I’ll be hanging onto the old girls for as long as possible!
  9. In no way was I knocking it, it’s a solid little gun but I just find the handling very mechanical?
  10. Hi all, just a bit of a personal opinion here but thought I’d see what others think I usually shoot with 1 of 2 old English box locks I own, nothing fancy, just army and navy’s I picked up for pennies at auction, 1 is a late 1890’s and the other early 1910’s I believe. Cheap and out of fashion but to me they seem to handle far better than they should and seem put together with a finesse you’d pay a fortune for these days. however one of them recently broke on a shoot day and the other is away getting reblacked so I had to break out my spare, an aya no4, it’s in lovely condition and is a nice gun with no obvious issues and plenty of people hold the no4 in high regards but to me it just seemed clunky and dead in the hands. could it be a bad gun or is this just one of those personal preference things?
  11. Funnily enough I had to use my spare last weekend! I usually shoot an old army and navy none ejector and it’s been bulletproof since owning it. Usually I shoot fairly close to home or near friends homes so any issues we can help each other out but so far we’ve all been fine. however I travelled to Inverness (about 300 miles) to shoot with someone I’ve not seen in a while and thought I’d pack a spare just in case, an aya no 4 I bought at auction last year but have never used ( I know, I know...) on the second drive my A&N felt spongey as I was closing it and upon investigation the bit of trigger guard that braces the action to the stock had snapped and the action was flexing away from the stock so that was the army and navy out of order. luckily I had the aya but I’d never shot it and knew it was too short, however I usually pick anything up and shoot acceptably so I thought it’s better than not shooting at all! stood along a river bank in a gully with a steady stream of good high partridges and the first barrel wouldn’t fire, leaving me with just the left barrel to use, both barrels ejecting even though the right hasn’t fired and every time I pull the trigger the gun jumping from my shoulder! An absolute miracle I hit anything at all! luckily after 6/7 shots the first barrel started working and the ejectors began behaving properly. some borrowed tape and the silvers pad unscrewed from the army and navy gave me some much needed length to the stock and I was good for the last 2 drives, where you guessed it.... I never got a shot! But I’m out again tomorrow and have to take the aya so hopefully we’ll get along better this time!
  12. Where are these racks of cheap unwanted English guns people talk about? I keep looking for them to buy but they all seem to be holding strong money!
  13. I’d say it’s scrap with that level of damage. I’ll take it off you and safely dispose of it if you want?
  14. Zoli Columbus 20 bore 32” barrels 5 chokes factory hard case with combination locks immaculate condition Any 20b cartridges I have left in the house £1500 Ono or would consider swap/px for an English sxs
  15. https://www.gunsonpegs.com/articles/shooting-talk/s/shooting-talk/the-side-by-side-shooting superstars looking through here it’s very surprising that some of the shots are only using 1/4 and 1/2. Especially lord Percy as I’ve seen north bunker at Alnwick and those birds are spectacular! there’s even one gun who shoots true cylinder!
  16. Fibre, I never shoot anything else these days!
  17. I’ve spoken to the organiser today and it seems the majority of birds are around 40-45 yards, from what’s been said on here and a discussion with others IC is not ideal but provided I do my part right should pose no serious issues. I do have another gun with tighter chokes, that I do shoot well, but just don’t enjoy shooting as much, which I’ll take along just in case I do struggle after the first drive or 2 thanks all
  18. Thanks all, I might just get myself under the highest clay tower I can find and prove to myself that the gun can kit at that range and then rely on the cartridges for the rest. thanks all
  19. I’d love to tell but the lad organising it keeps things close to his chest, sorry mate! I’m certainly looking forward to it though! I’ve never been before, it was described as good with some higher birds and knowing the bloke his “good”is anything around 40yrds definitely not talking Whitfield standards though
  20. Evening all, sorry if this has been done to death! my go to gun is bored I/C in both barrels which for my usual shooting is ideal, mostly walked up with the odd stand here and there. i’ve been invited to a good day up in Scotland later in the year where the majority of drives show 40yd+ birds. I will move to a heavier cartridge than usual, probably a 30/32gr 5 but will I be under gunned with my open chokes? thanks jamie
