If we used common sense the 12 bore does it all, different loading for all qaurry. Lightweight alloy guns to heavy clay busters.
Yet we all like to shoot different calibers at times. Because we can and enjoy using a little cartridge.
You sir have "hit the nail on the head" 👍

I used to own a 28bore but sold it. Ithink as a walk up mooching round the woods and fields with the odd chance of a shot, the lighter alloy actioned 28 bores takes some beating. Better patterns than a .410 and longer range.
For a light driven gun a nice balanced 20bore has it beaten everytime. But where's the fun in that.
I now use a old 12 bore sxs with short cylinder choke barrels and 25/26 gram carts as beat up mooching gun. Not worried if I had to use as a paddle or step to get over a wall. Proper Zombie basher as bosher would say. Light enough to carry without your arm getting tired.
I agree almost, I have found very little difference between the 20 and the 28. I still use my 12 sxs. However the 28 holds nostalgic memory's for me, as it was the fist cartridge I used through a battered old single barrel hammer gun.

I use a max load of 25grm 5s on a driven day and 21grm 6 for walk up

I to am the proud owner of a B525l in a 28 bore. From the moment I found it nestled on the rack at my local gun shop, I knew it was a 'good un'. I have been down the local clay club and my scores have improved. The gun feels like a natural extention to my arms. Looking forward season to start. I have a day on walked up partridge which I think will be this guns perfect test

686 sporter multi choke doubled woodcock with that gun and it fitted like a glove, God I miss that gun. Had to sell it to pay the rent (£150). Went to a friend he had 30 years of good use from it. I am still searching for another that comes close to that one

Why can I say. Luv em great grip for my loading and for using with the sxs

That's very nicely done.
I am very pleased with it. I cannot claim any credit for the work as it was carried out by a chap I know who enjoys working with wood. When I gave it to him it was dented and scratched. He asked what sort of chequer I would like, flat or raised. I decided on the non original raised, I find it easier to get a grip. I also decided to get a kickeze fitted which has transform the shooting of this gun as it feel far more stable in the shoulder. While he was busy with that I sent the action and barrel of to get serviced. Very happy with it now people who had seen it pre refer thought it was a different gun. Just to check all was good I got straight out for a quick walk around the woods on my perm 6 shots 3 pigeon=big 😁

It certainly is.
Shoots like a dream. I definitely get why people love the 16g.
Will be sending the barrels off to be reblued in couple of months. Its fine at the moment but you can see it thinning and having it redone will make it look stunning.
Just had the wood work on my 16 redone and it looks beautiful. (pic to follow) also had a kickease added.

A very similar situation I found myself in a few seasons ago. I had initially looked at a 20 for the youngsters, after realising that a .410 is more expert territory and as Scully says missing kills enthusiasm.
So it was a 20 we were after and while going through the racks in the shop to see what was easiest to handle for a youngster we finally settled on a Lincoln 28 Bore as it was quite a bit lighter than the 20s.
After myself and the youngsters had smashed a few clays with it, I then promptly nicked it for game shooting and that's what I've been using the past 3 seasons. My shoots are quite informal. Not massive bags so there is a lot more gun carrying / holding than actual shooting and the lightness of the 28, plus the ability to just stuff 20-30 cartridges in a pocket is quite liberating.
It is absolutely more than enough gun for sensible pheasant shooting. I use 24 gram #5 or #5 1/2 for game shooting and 21 gram #6 1/2 for pigeons and clays. For beginners I have a very nice 16 gram #9 load that has almost no recoil.
I like the 28 bore so much I bought myself one 'proper' this year, rather than nicking the kids gun.
Cheers
Clive
Couldn't agree more Clive I use a Lincoln choked 1/4 & 1/2 bought it about 4 years back. Brilliant gun took it out yesterday and got remarks from the neighbouring guns on how effective it was. May have even converted a few.

Pity these aren't made in 7s and being fibre they'd make a fine pigeon cartridge.
The Regal are a very nice and they work very well on the woodies.

I have 12,16,20,28. I like the all of them but the 28 is my favorite light to carry in both gun and cartridges (21grm or 23grm). I believe I am sensible and will only take game at a max of 35 yards, no matter which of which gun have taken out. It is as always about shooting within your limits. P. S my 28 is a Lincoln at great gun.

Mate of mine Has a Bretta 686 bought in '87' I watched him shotting one day bring down some beautifull high (not silly high) birds. At the end of the drive i asked what was the choke, his reply they were open. learnt my lesson now I don't worry about choke, but I do pattern my gun cartridge combination.

You can buy explosives over the supermarket counter no questions asked. Try doing that with a tub of Blue Dot.
