  1. Hi all I have an old Spanish SxS which is my knock about gun used for rough shooting etc, its in fair condition but I like shooting it. Probably worthless to be honest but I plan to "shoot it into the ground". I have noticed that the barrel exterior has a few rust spots probably from the damp weather and me being not overly anal about cleaning it! Is there anything people have done to protect older guns from the dreaded rust? I thought about cold bluing the barrels but not read very much positive about that and seems a lot of effort for potentially poor results. Duracoat at 70 odd quick cant be justified, I did look at Krylon paints but that seem to come in weird colours and not sure if its meant for airsoft toys rather that proper guns! Any tips of hints for a functional make over?
  2. +1 for Valley View its open on Boxing Day. Was great to meet up with JamesMoody3 their yesterday, even though he wiped the floor with my score which is too embarrassing to post! Wont be able to make it though myself but will be going for a walk in the woods with my SxS for a spot of walked up rough shooting at some point over the break! I wonder if Pigeon goes with Turkey Leftovers for a nice stew or a curry??
  3. I like that! Thanks for all of the tips. It's not too bad out there at the moment so hopefully won't get too damp.
  4. +1 for the Yildiz got one on order for next week. Under 500 quid brand new.
  5. That's good enough for me!!! Went to my local Gun shop that stocks Yildiz but they didn't have a sbs .410 in stock. Got one coming in next week so will probably end up with an early Christmas pressy. I want this one... http://www.shootinguk.co.uk/reviews/shotgun/yildiz-410-side-by-side-shotgun-review
  6. Going clay shooting tomorrow and the weather looks horrible! I was planning to use my old side by side but I don't shoot very well with it so want to take my new Winchester Select OU. I thought about giving it a good pre clean and then a light coating of bisley bore cleaner on the external metalwork. Also considered a light spray of a beeswax based furniture polish my Mrs has some 'original non silicone beeswax' polish which I have done on my guns before. Seems good stuff and is not slippery or sticky. Has anyone got any other tips for taking guns out in wet weather, does my idea sound reasonable??
  7. Guys many thanks for all of the responses, the resounding answer seems to be positive so I am going to try and get to my local shop and buy one. I think the Yldiz seems the best bet albeit a little more dosh, but I would rather buy something that lasts and is better to use. Will try and pick up some of the Eley 3" cartridges. Hoping to get out for a wander in the woods over christmas and will give it a go!
  8. Look at imported Mitsubishi Pajero's (Japanese equivalent of the Shogun). I bought one a few years ago for about 2.5K went down to a place in Southampton to collect it, it was in good nick but had nearly 200,000KM's on the clock (around 120,000 miles). Proper 4x4 with a mechanical transfer box and difflock no complex electronics to go wrong I had it over the winter when it snowed really badly and I became very popular in the village as I could pull most other cars out of trouble. I used it and abused it for about 2 years and it never let me down, they're easy to work on and the diesels go on for ages. In the end I sold it for a grand which included the 2 inch layer of mud and crud it had accumulated while I owned it! Same would apply to any other Mitsubishi truck with the same engine (Shogun Sports are worth a look as are the older L200's) Only draw back is that there pretty damn ugly!
  9. I have recently been interested in purchasing a .410 shotgun, not sure why probably because I have never owned one. I would use if for the odd bit of rough shooting and maybe even clays but I cant quite put my finger on why I REALLY need one! So had a look at a few, my local shop had a nice Spanish SxS which was cheap and fitted quite well but then I also thought about a new Yildiz. Can anyone offer any thoughts, words of wisdom or advice on the merits of this small gauge and whether anyone has used them for anything other than shooting squirrels, mice or rats? They seem to be just a bit of fun and a bit different and when my son is old enough it could be a good way to introduce him to the sport... (there you go I am trying to persuade myself its a good idea!)... Ideally dont want to spend a lot so the Yildiz would be at the top end of the budget so I wonder what I can pick up for a couple of hundred quid?
  10. I bought a No4 from the NRA Armourer at Bisley a few years ago, it had a replacement barrel and was in excellent condition. I think I paid about 300 quid for it, for service rifle disciplines it was an amazing piece of kit. If I have one regret in my shooting career of a rifle I have sold my enfield would be it, so I would say find the best one you can get and hang onto it. I had Fultons fit a diopter sight and I used it regularly at 1,000 yards on Stickledown at Bisley it gave my Blaser LRS2 a run for its money... I wish I still had it!! Good luck
  11. +1 for the Yildiz, great value for the money.
  12. No they won't fit beretta as mentioned, I bought two sets one I have in my Winchester the other for a miroku that I was going to buy but didn't in the end. So don't need these.
  13. Hi Lee good to meet you! Your not too far from me, you should try Valley View sometime in Great Missenden near Amersham. Good little informal shoot runs every other week next one is next Sunday 13th might see you there! Cheers
  14. I think there may be another set of Teagues going up on PW before too long as well! Thanks B25Modelman...
  15. What made you purchase the Teagues before you got the gun?
  16. Hi All Ok so please let me apologise up front for any daft questions here, and this thread is not intended to open up any debate around the merits (or otherwise) of extended chokes... Back to shooting after a good few years off and just bought a new Winchester Select Sporting 2, lovely gun and I am very pleased with it. Took some advice and an informal lesson from a very experienced friend who has coached before and we had a long chat about chokes. His advice was for now at least, stick in 1/4 chokes in both barrels and forget about them (obviously this means while shooting not cleaning and I know all about cleaning them and greasing etc to avoid seizing). So rather than purchase another standard winchester choke I bought a new pair of super extended 1/4 chokes from Teague, service was great by the way. Not entirely sure why I went for the super extendeds probably slightly cosmetic as I think they look quite good and partially from doing research about the marginal benefit that longer chokes can give. I didnt buy the Teague choke wrench but emailed them and Ivan from Teagues said it was fine to tighten them manually. (actually not sure I am still keen on the cosmetic angle now seeing them in the flesh but there you go!) So onto my questions... 1. Even with fingers alone I am able to wrench these up tightly in fact after using them for the first time they were pretty hard to remove for cleaning. Never came loose during 100 birds of sporting and I wonder if i tightened them up too much? Now I don't have hands like a plains gorilla so I don't think I am over doing it but wondered if anyone had any experience of this or can offer any tips of advice? 2. Possible daft question alert! - is it possible to damage the barrel jointing by tightening them up manually? So this is the old engineer in me, I wondered if by using the official wrench the torque is spread more evenly not sure this is valid, but hey its been bugging me so I have asked!. Also will the slight extra weight cause any potential extra wear and tear on the barrel lockwork? I weighted these things, they are 49 Grams vs. 28Grams for the standards ones so multiplied twice that makes an additional 1.5 ounces at the end of the barrel are there about... Did I shoot better with them? Well not really but perhaps they will help me one day in the future or maybe they'll just end of being sold on like alot of things I have bought for shooting over the year!! Cheers any tips would be appreciated!
  17. I started clay shooting with a semi back in the 90's a Remington 11-87 Premier it was a great gun and I got to a pretty reasonable standard with it. I then went onto O/U's but always had a soft spot for auto's. I ended up buying and then selling a Beretta A391 Urika which was superb and a really flexible gun I regret selling that one but chopped it in towards a scope or something else to do with rifle shooting. I would thoroughly recommend the A391 you can pick them up pretty cheap and they are solid and reliable. As for whether Auto's are in some way frowned upon I can tell you that in my experience I shot with mine at some pretty exclusive grounds and private shoots and never had anyone question it... Pumps on the other hand are another matter great for rough shooting or in a hide but will certainly raise some eyebrows at some of the more "formal" shoots or shooting grounds....
  18. Light transfer will be better with the larger tube size so better in low light conditions. That said alot depends on the quality of the optics and Meopta are excellent. I had a 25mm Schmidt and Bender on my Blaser LRS2 for a while and it was fine in pretty dim conditions so if its a top quality scope there shouldn't be a vast difference. Really depends on what its used for and conditions.
  19. Hi All Does anyone know if Kingswood Gun Club is still going? http://www.kingswoodgunclub.com/ I have emailed them a couple of times to ask about membership and no answer. They seem to have quite an active diary but maybe dont look at emails... If anyone has any experience of them maybe you can let me know, cheers
  20. Hi All Quick hello from me just joined PW and glad to be here. Back into shooting after a few years off due to kids and family etc mainly clays but also a bit of rough shooting where possible. I received my SGC after a 6 month wait from TVP and now the proud owner of a Winchester Select II sporter which I am well pleased with. Spent many years in competitive target rifle mainly at Bisley mainly F Class and various civilian service rifle disciplines. Located in Bucks and happy to hear from anyone local who might want to meet for a shoot or maybe just a pint! All the best Paul
