  1. I think the option of "I need the gun cabinet to get the certificate, to use ANY gun, but I don't need to have a gun there, until later when I convince you to come shooting etc" will buy you time, and get the certificate. Perhaps it's also a case of "He's doing something not about ME AND HIS UNBOARN CHIIIIIILD". bad dad you! ;-)
  2. Thanks Terry, seems that what I need to do then -- I didn't want to appear 'pushy' but hey :-)
  3. Hi Terry! I see you are not far off yourself, and yes, it's Jonathan's place of course :-) I'm based in Rhayader myself, but I pretty often come your way; do you go to Jonathan's often, or are there other clay places I haven't discovered in the area? ;-)
  4. I used stained danish oil with great success on guitars. You can get a few colored ones, like yellow/blond or redish etc; in which case you stain the finish, not the wood so it works pretty evenly. Danish oil makes a great finish -- with proper curing it is very, very solid stuff. Before/after pics. Mind you it took at least 5+ coats on this one...and it took a couple of months for it to be /truly/ bulletproof
  5. Doesn't sound too good! perhaps they don't /have/ an officer in place or something?
  6. I've submitted my application about 6 weeks ago, not a peek since -- anyone has an idea how long it takes in mid-wales? Gun cabinet is neatly installed, deposits are on for our 'first guns', now just need the certificate to be able to shoot without an instructor!
  7. I've hot two homes; one in Wales, one in England. I commute between the two. I've applied for a SGC in wales, as as it's where I'm currently shooting, but ultimately I'd like to shoot in the south as well, and perhaps have a couple of guns there too.. So how do you do that? If I install a cabinet in the south, do I need to get it inspected as well? What about traveling; do I need a special setup in my car at all? Sorry for the newbie questions :-)
  8. My wife was the one who got /me/ into shooting... She's 5"2 or something, but has good shoulders; she's currently learning (as I am) and using a 20; she tried a 12 but it's just too heavy for her at the moment; the 20 is a lot better on that respect, and she can shoot 100 cartridges in one session without her arms falling off. She DOES have a bad stance, as described, but it can't be escaped until she builds the necessary muscles. So we've been doing /just that/ -- gym weights she has around and will hold at arm length whenever she can, and also work on lower torso muscles by rotating her upper body while holding the weights. It already helped a lot -- in fact I'm doing the same exercises myself, as even if I've actually got pretty massive shoulders, the 'shooting muscles' are slightly unusual, I've discovered! Right now the 20 is excellent (it's gorgeous as well; Browning 425 Grade 5!), as she can /shoot/ and /hit/ stuff, I'm fairly sure as she progresses, she'll get a better stance, and perhaps eventually will be able to shoot the 12. Ultimately it's about having fun in the meantime!
  9. Yes, Liberon makes nice products... a little goes a long way too!
  10. @victorismyhero you can use a ceramic heater and do the mixing outside; that's how I do my beeswax polish. You can also add stuff to the mix; for my furniture I add lemon essential oil, but you can put whatever you like.
  11. In my experience of making guitars, oil finishes of any thickness can take months to properly cure; and some never /actually/ completely do... Likewise with Nitro coating, it takes quite a while for it to cure to anything hard wearing. Also, SOME wood just never give up, and is just unfit for being coated with /anything/ I had a piece like that some time ago, I stripped it perhaps 5 times, and a patch of grain would still gas out. I even tried filling with superglue (which usually works fantastic) and it still wouldn't look good afterward.
  12. Hi everyone, thanks for the welcome! I'm near Rhayader/Llanidloes -- Haimwood looks quite a bit further up, but might be worth a visit too... What about berkshire/bucks? I commute to the south quite a lot, in Burnham (bucks) -- I'm aware of E.J Churchill (sp?) near High Wycombe -- haven't visited yet; are there others around, with a friendly crowd?
  13. Hi guys, I'm brand new to shooting 'seriously' -- I picked up clay pigeon shooting as a bit of an 'experiment' last october, and I'm hooked! I'm shooting in mid-wales with my wife, and so far it has required the biggest storm of the winter to keep us from going out and shoot stuff! We are currently waiting for our licences, and have been out with coaches from the shooting center so far, knowledgeable and friendly bunch! I've tried a few guns, and finally settled on a Miroku 3800 trap as a 'first gun' and I'm slightly jealous of the Mrs, who found a fitted gun for her in a gorgeous Browning 425 20 gauge, in grade 5 -- stunning piece! We have a bit of a long term plan of perhaps shooting pheasants next year or so, or whenever we decide we have a fair chance of making clean kills -- also, I think we'll shoot as much as we can kill, freeze, and eat for the remaining of the year. We'll see how it goes! We also own a nice piece of woodland/wetland where I've spotted pheasants and wild ducks (so far) -- but I think we'll leave them alone for the foreseeable future; altho I could imagine us shooting pigeons, if the occasion present itself..
