Gentlemen, many thanks for all your time and advice. Have since also received excellent detailed advice from Julian Bond (of Air Arms) who confirmed my conclusion the problem was likely the result of the top sear failure. Upon removing the stock and dismantling the trigger guard and sear cover plate found all was intact (nothing broken). However there was much grease blackened with age and well dried out. Further consultation with Julian - he agreed with me that over greasing at the factory and aging probably was the cause of the problem. Cleaned it away with cotton buds, a little gun oil lubrication and reassembly. Tried it all again and perfect shooting again!!
