I spent 45 minutes last night talking to a group of 30 at an AGM, well over half were BASC members.
I spoke about the need to do the consultation , and the probable outcomes, only one of them had already done the consultation
One gentleman protested that lead would not be banned at clay grounds, as BASC had told him that lead removal would mean they could carry on using it.
I explained that lead removal was an expensive and often impossible task over rough, forested or wet ground, he insisted that 'most' clay grounds already did it, using 'machines'.
I asked him what these machines looked like, but he didnt have a clue, or how they worked.
I ran a clay ground for many years, and use many others, Ive never heard of a clay ground removing lead shot.
Broken clays yes, empty carts and plastic wads where accessible could and should be removed periodically, but many grounds make no attempt whatsoever.

If our shooting orgs are to make any headway in this battle, they need to do a better job of educating people on how it can be fought.
I can only reach so many people, BASC has the resources to reach many thousands, whether the message gets across is another matter, maybe the message needs to be changed, or the delivery method ?

Why didn't you invite BASC to your AGM. this can be arranged. then all questions can be answered transparently .

You completely overlook - with this comment - and you either ignore or are unaware of Bsac policy to pursue a policy which was unacceptable and detrimental to the majority of its membership for the long term.  You are suggesting that we just ignore the devious and damaging agenda driven by Swift'n Co+ successive appointees ,just swallow the mantra "biggest pro-shooting body"...and just carry on paying annual subs of ~ £80 (x membership numbers of ? ).  Not for me!! Oops ...well, I omit that this outfit has fiddled compulsory membership subscription as part of entry to many wildfowling clubs.

If you disregard the BSers historic duplicity and just carry on payin' ... well?...nothin' will change.

which was unacceptable and detrimental to the majority of its membership

Quite a bold statement, I am interested to know how you know this?

Just what damaging agenda do you think is being pushed ?

Fiddled compulsory membership ?  you are funny, you do not wild fowling clubs have a choice to be members or not?

if you look at that link you will see that there are a number of organisation supporting a transition away from lead shot.

    1 Restriction of lead ammunition
    (1) Any person who possesses, uses or places on the market lead ammunition for the purpose of shooting animals is guilty of an offence.
    (2) 5 Any person who possesses, uses or places on the market lead ammunition for the purpose of target shooting is guilty of an offence.

    It includes simple ownership also.

You can follow the progress of the bill if you wish:

You could be liable for a level 4 fine (up to £2,500).

You can thank Lord Browne of Ladyton for raising the proposal/bill.

that's an old bill of 2022 -  not one for this autumn

BASC predominantly represent, and promote game shooting.
There isnt really an argument in this.
When its personal or corporate interests are threatened , BASC swings into action to protect them, less so when it comes to other types of shooting.

They will comply , because they wont be able to buy them in the first place.
When the price of a cartridge doubles, do you really think we wont lose people as they simply cant afford it anymore ?

More people lost, less SGC s issued and renewed, the sport will become the reserve of only the well off.

Wait till sec 2 disappears , .22lr and airgunning, costs of certs quadruple.
More restrictions = less people shooting, the voice of shooting will be a whisper, rural economies based around shooting  will die, and the restrictions on gamebird release will seem like a drop in the ocean compared.

Its always amuses me how many users here comment on BASC saying what they are doing is wrong, and yet are not members, the ironic thing is that all of those non members will still reap the rewards of the work undertaken by BASC.

    BASC represent all shooting, and they act for all shooters, a few examples of this are;

1, Pigeon shooting, Back in 2020 when the GL was revoked, BASC got hem turned around and now we are all still using this licence to control woodpigeons.

2, Wildfowling, BASC support many clubs and thousands of members to retain consent allowing them to go wildfowling

3, Young shots and Ladies days - BASC lead the way in providing opportunities for literally thousands of people introducing the to shooting each year.

4, BASC have challenged the restrictions/ban on the use of lead ammunition for all outdoor shooting presented by the HSE.

Yes of course they represent game shooting and game shooters, of course this will need support and for all organisations to act when needed, that is why you see the NGO, BGA, CA, CLA, GWCT all raising awareness to the issues around GL43.

I'm not quite sure why you think 22lr and airguing will disappear?  and when will the price of cartridges double ? and more to the point why ?

The result of C19 is that there are significant delays in licensing across the country, then with the ongoing issues on Devon and Cornwall new guidance was issued meaning all departments had to undertake medical verifications this is why you see cert number declining over the last couple of years.

Once again , Ill ask , did BASC only get 2 weeks notice of the restriction ?
This, despite a warning from 2019 that game bird release would be reviewed https://www.gov.uk/government/news/defra-responds-to-wild-justice-challenge-releasing-gamebirds-on-protected-sites
And despite the risk of game birds spreading avian flu https://www.countytimes.co.uk/news/23065333.letter---pheasants-main-culprits-spreading-avian-flu/

BASC bashing aside, this was bound to happen sooner or later.
Good luck with the court case.

Are you a BASC member ?

BASC take legal action against DEFRA

By whom? Have a gander at the comments regarding the shooting of woodcock on Packhams FB petition page.
It would appear shooting for ‘sport’ doesn’t make the killing of birds any more acceptable.
Can anyone tell me the difference between a ‘big bag’ day and an average bag day?

Can anyone tell me the difference between a ‘big bag’ day and an average bag day?

Yes,  There is no difference. all are good, if done well and inline with best practice.

So last year I started shooting with steel so that the dead birds were easier to dispose of via what seemed abundant outlets, to my horror I still don’t seem to be able to empty my freezer!
Has anyone got any ideas for disposing of steel shot birds more easily? I am Leicestershire Northamptonshire and Warwickshire borders if that helps!!

    Eat them?

Donate them to country food trust

Give them to your neighbours/ family ?

AH......Sorry i must have listen to the wrong Podcast and misinterpreted the bit in the film were they cut open the unfired cartridges and found wads dissolving, and in there and my opinion unsafe to use, after i believe just 24 hours in water.  My main point from the film being is how will we as shooters experienced or other wise know how wet they have got when shooting all day in heavy torrential rain and how much they have degraded by the next time we get to use them. VERY VERY DANGEROUS in my opinoin.

you wouldn't shoot any cartridge that was submerged for 24 hours,... Rain will not get into the cartridges they are plaswelded .. no issue. even in the test they were far better than they thought they would be..

looks like you will be using bismuth ...

Spoken to BASC. They have advised that one can only go out on the pigeons after the crops have started being damaged and the farmer has to call you, the shooter then has to go out and see actual damage of the crops in order to start crop protection. IF those are the new guidelines under the general licenses then can all of us who shoot/want to shoot (for crop protection) as part of a club can say goodbye to this?

The info you are referring to seems to be regarding shooting during lockdown.

You can roost shoot pigeon as preventative measures.  There was a piece in the latest BASC magazine on this "eastern page"

    Best wishes

have a large stock pile of lead if you wish to look a fool ask a room if they are more concerned about the lead or the large piece of plastic it comes in and the plastic case it’s fired from if birds were dying from ingesting lead we would be knee deep in bodies and all would be extinct by now as for basc and co this rubbish came from basc from the amount voting with their feet the other orgs won’t rush to join ideas from basc again any fool who’s calls for a ban affects MY shooting so will hear about it like it or not

So no answer to any of the points then ?

    As i expected.

i have a suggestion for manufacturers ignore basc keep selling lead and we will keep buying it win win

    And,

    • What about the Ban that will inevitably happen when people do not change voluntarily?
    • What about the perception of people outside the shooting community ?
    • What about the wildlife that will continue to ingest the lead and die ?

that right you don't care about any of that or the future of shooting... all you care about is going against BASC even though it was all 9 major organisations that made the statement...

I thought I'd give it a go. However, as per BASC they're not interested in what I may have to say as I didn't shoot driven game this last season. Come to think about it, is there such a thing in the UK as an organiisation which has any interest in vermin shooters - other than doing nothing else but accept their subscriptions that is?

Was it not BASC who sorted out the GLs when they were removed ? or have you forgotten that so quickly ?  they have also ensured the current ones are workable.

CPSA still do offer legal cover for revocation.

Legal expenses insurance for shotgun certificate revocation and renewal issues (excluding colts and clubman) with effect from 1st April 2014.

And also their cover isn't just for clay target shooting it covers live quarry shooting also including deerstalking, game, vermin.

    https://www.cpsa.co.uk/insuredactivities

And if over age 60 is £62 instead of the usual £72 per year. BASC is £82 and their senior membership rate of £71 is if you are over age 65.

Do the maths. Age over sixty years and you are saving £20 a year AND get that legal insurance that BASC doesn't now include.

No Legal cover will take up any case if you are breaking the law .

Insurance companies use any excuse not to fight cases, thats a fact .

  16. Loved the video, ignore the comment above someone cannot give a review if they do not watch the video .

The intro is fine, if people do not want to watch it they can skip forwards.

The information on the video itself is good, well delivered and understandable. keep making the videos and keep posting them .
