  1. Solved the problem of bending that 2 inch weld mesh. Just cut at 6 squares , three lengths.  Then put in the vice and easily bend to about 30 deg angle both sides just two of the holes depth which you should finish with a three sided piece, then attach each piece side by side with zip ties and you finish up with almost a round tube. Then attach with zip ties a length of normal one or two inch garden wire mesh lay the whole deal on a flat surface apply a 3-4 inch depth of hay over the whole area and roll up tying off again wirh zip ties or soft wire.  The two inch  mesh 'spine' gives the whole thing strength and the garden wire holds the hay in place.  Purring them in place this weekend so more photos once they are in.

  2. That looks good.  Our weld mesh are a bit over the top I know but the material was there. I was just interested to see if being square makes any difference.  I know they will and do but still amazes me that mallard will use them. Maybe next year before they get used as the pond looks a bit bare at the moment. Planning to plant up and seed with wild flowers etc.

  3. I have just typed this once and the system has just wiped it off..........not the first time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are in the processof refurbishing a large pond on the farm and decided to put on a couple of those nest tubes. We have a lot of scrap 2 inch twinweld wire mesh but it is difficult to bend and roll. Two of us managed to make one but I am going to weld four sections into a square box shape and then roll it in hay with wire mesh on the outside. Just wondering if the birds will notice.  Fortunately with the front end loader we can reach out over the pond and drive the scaffold poles in and attache the nest tubes.  Goimng to be ann interesting summer.

    Photos later.

  4. Yes, that is a very nice raised blind.  I saw one out in Texas which was erected for an American President. It had an electric elevator to get up and when in it had leather trimmed seats and a bar.   Nothing like being comfy.

Presumably card-carrying members of The Vegan Society would not eat anything grown with aid of animal manure or human "night soil".

Does the label on your box of plant food guarantee that it was produced entirely from plant-based compost?   If not, it probably includes industrially manufactured chemical fertilisers or (God forbid) peat.

Gawd knows, it is just small round grey coloured pellets. Similar colour to most vegans I have met.

  6. I've shot a few over the years both proper Russians as the Americans call them both in Poland and Slovenia and ate quite a fair bit. The true wild boar does taste much better than farm bred or even the wild hogs we shot out in Texas.  Our there anything over a year old went for sausage but the haunch/ham off of a young yearling took a lot of beating and the backstraps properly prepared where to die for.  Used to have some smoked, awesome.

Well done RimFire and thank you for the report.

  7. I didn't know if to put this in rhe joke section but here goes.

This morning I decided to give all of my plants in the garden some nutrient and I had a box of well know plant food. Unsusually I decided to read the instructions as follows

Feeding for garden greenhouse and home.

For use prior to plantingas well as established plants.

    Suitable for vegans.................

that did it I almost fell over my geraniums and had to sit down for laughing.

The American establishment are terrified of Trump, that’s all there is to it. Yes, he may be guilty of all manner of things ( who amongst them isn’t?) but they are so scared he will win another term they will do anything to ensure he doesn’t or can’t. If he isn’t convicted there is nothing to prevent him from standing again. That’s all there is to it really.
We see it over here to a much lesser degree.
The opposition parties have nothing to offer any of us, absolutely nothing, so in attempts to ensure the Tories don’t get in again they will try anything to ensure they don’t.

    100%

The real frightening thing is there are sufficient people out there willing to vote for the likes of Biden , Harris May etc etc etc.  Certainly things where a lot better during Trumps years in office.  There is little doubt that Politics is a very dirty business.

  9. I use the window cleaner spray my wife uses for inside of our house windowns, works a treat.  On the subject of car windowns I have noriced over the years as windoscreens get more slanted the reflection of the shiny top of the dashboard causes a greayish reflection particularly in suny conditions.  In fact the reaction on my X rype Jag almost blots out any vision.  I saw some fitted top covers they use in Australia a lot and found one for my Dacia Duster. Totally solves the problem. No reflection.  I couldn't find one for the Jag unfortunately

  10. As above.  Cash notes are legal tender and should be acceptable if they want to do business.  Letter to your newspaper. Unfortunately we have bred a whole army of lemings over the last 30yrs who will 'behave'.... look at the response to covid.

  11. I think we are splitting hairs because they are all slightly different. This morning my wife said..DO NOT go down the wood in the car(Duster) it is as wet as I have seen it in 30yrs.     I had just had the hedges cut as well and the two big tractors had cut the walkways up.  My little birds needed feeding so down I went.  Click 4wd Lock and got right to the far end and thought I will go back along the outside ride. Turned to do so and the car started to spin the tyres. I backed up and managed to get on some slightly harder ground and the Duster got me back home. Yes, it was touch and go for a while but the car gave me the confidence it would get itself out. This is on basic road tyre although they do have 4x4 on the side they have no gripping tread as such.   New set of tyres will be next purchase. Yes the MPG will probably siffer but 45 insyerd of 49-50mpg is still acceptable.  BUT  horses for courses, my Duster will not pull the two hefty trailers I have but I have a tractor which will do that from the wood.

IF   I needed a big heavy load lugging 4x4 I would go out and buy another LR90.

  12. My Pear Tree hide will not be used for at least a year so the farmer picked it up for me and put it in the silage pit area where I can control the pigeons, magpies, and corvids  feeding on the maize silage.  Works a treat and I can drag it on the concrete surface if necessarily and if it gets in the way the front end loader can lift it to a better spot.. These IBCs do make excellent weather proof hides. I cut the base off the plastic liner and then lift the rest up about a foot which makes a roof.  I cut one side out and male a door.  Permanent plastic garden chair and a p[iece of wood across as a shelf for the coffee and your good to go.   This one has seen the demise of a fair few tree rats in the last five years or so.

I also slot some 3x3 inch wood and make some legs as can be seen.

  13. I think I have solved the niger seed problem. Cut the base of a plastic drum and made a bracket for it, then hung the two feeders just over the tray.  Yes they still chuck the seed out but we have also seen them feeding in the tray. Have up to six at a time coming every morning and afternoon.

Bullfinch cock and hen, chaffinch cock and hen,  greenfinch hen, and all the other usuals.

Real pleased we have at least one pair of bullfinches in the village.

  14. I am selling my X Rype reluctantly. Since acquiring the Duster we have become a true three car family and we only really need two and my wife refuses to sell her little Skoda and I can't blame her, cracking little motor.

I am offering it here prior to putting it out into the real world at £3200.  It has been regular serviced and cared for by my local garage and the previous owner sold it to me with full written history.  I have not doubt these will become future Classics.  The car is sub 70,000 miles ( too idle to walk down to the garage and check) and has been kept garaged when not in use. It has a fitted plastic tray in the boot area (photo show it as is but it can be lifted out and washed no problem) and will have a full service and clean before transfer.  Grieves me to see it go but it is just sitting there not enjoying life.   If anyone interested give me a pm and a viewing can be arranged within a sensible distance or you can call here.

  16. Well done up there. We enjoyed the pic of the red.  Good letters in the Telegraph pointing out that greys are coniverous and will eat birds eggs and young and not just veggies.

Numbers here are low to nil. Have not seen one in our wood for couple of months and my neighbour had a sudden influx of three which he dealt with.  I have them returning to one of my flip tops at the farm so will have a look this week hopefully as I can drive and shoot from the car if I can't climb the steps up to the blimd. Unfortunately The Pear Tree flip top will be out of use for 12 months as that field is being ploughed and put to maize then back to grass, so going to be late autumn before I can get down there.  Still one or two at the golf club and as soon as it dries out enough not to mark the ground then I can drive to both flip tops there.  No news on the hip just two boxes of pain killers. I will give them a couple of weeks and chase them up a bit.   I had to fill in a questionaire..two pages....as to how the pain was effecting me. A choice of 5 for each situation.  Someone is being paid to collate all this rubbish, money down the drain.   GRRRRRRR I need a tree rat to show up.
