  1. That just about sums it up. I personally don't 'aim' my guns and measured ones are set for 'centre vision', I just look at the bird and in essence don't 'aim' and done it this way for close on 70yrs. I used to shoot pistol as a tactical FA officer with both eyes open...used to drive instructors mad because we used to shoot weak eye / strong eye around barricades and I always had both eyes fully open. That why if you are serious about your shooting you should at least spend a few bob and go have a fitting with a reputable stocker.
  2. The one certain thing you can say about any shot be it air rifle or 458 Win Mag, once that projectile leaves the barrel and hits something it is it's own free agent and shoot enough and you will get some seriously weird results. Had a 30-06 130grain round nose hit a large fallow buck at about 45degrees from behind, just a couple of ribs behind the front leg halfway up the body. It reacted perfectly for the first 10 inches or so and destroyed the heart, what happened next is not explainable but i found the exhausted fully mushroom bullet embedded in the haunch !!! The best we can do is make an intelligent guess.
  3. Used to be the cartridge years ago, probably killed more partridge than any other shell other than maybe the Grand Prix.
  4. The EU numpties are really starting to panic. They have pulled old Rumpty Tumpty out of retirement to spread fake news now and he is stirring the Scotland theme.
  5. Yep desert army netting and I slope my stakes in a pyramid shape to lessen the square edges, even then some straw helps break it up further.
  6. Thanks, I will make enquiries at my local air shop.
  7. Lot of it about and much more if Corbyn gets his feet in the door.
  8. Put a pigeon in the foot end of a silk stocking or pair of old tights......take the lady out first. Stretch it over nice and tight and just nick a few holes that a feather or two can protrude from. My viszla would not retrieve ducks until i did this. Don't ask me why but had no problems once he got the hang of it. Worth trying.
  9. ...stu ???? is it possible to upgrade a TX200 ????? My requirement is not rabbits over 40 to50yrds but making certain I cleanly kill magpies, barn pigeons and tree rats out to 40yrds. I feel that sometimes I need just that bit extra to do the job properly. I have a TX200in 177 which I enjoy but if I could up the power to 18-19lbs AND still retain the accuracy it would be very useful. I have to admit I have always thought that the 12ftlb limit was a bit stupid ..... whoever thought that one up didn't use an air rifle much if at all for vermin shooting. Certainly if they decide to license air rifles then we should all lobby for the limit to be removed.
  10. SSSSSSHHHHHHUUDDDDDDDDEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  11. Probably more here in the UK than in the Far East. They have really settled in and spreading widely. Some people hate 'em, I love 'em, both on the hoof and on the plate. Doe under a squirrel feeder.
  12. Hired one in 1978 on our first ever visit to the USA. Brilliant. We then hired a seriously large one and did 10 days in Florida... the camper van was superb ...Florida ..The Pits unless you like getting eaten alive by mossies which bite a piece out and fly up a tree to eat it. MIND..Canada has it's insects as well. Most of the hire companies are pretty reliable but do a bit of research and TAKE NOTE OF THE SMALL PRINT on the insurance. I cracked a wing mirror(almost as big as in our bathroom!!!) and on return they tried to charge me but I had done my homework and drew their attention to the small print. They apologised. As far as your youngster is concerned, again, do your homework... that is the joy of the internet..you can plan stops where a young child would get a thrill. BUT, I would also suggest leaving it a couple of years because it may spoil your holiday as well.
  13. Yes, it is interesting it happens to larger bore cartridges and will be interested to see their response. The burning/destruction of the 410s did not seem to effect the result either but stillnot good. The RC cases look very similar to the Eley cases and I wonder if it is the make up of the case. The Lylevale shells I have come out clean as a whistle, almost like new in comparison.
  14. Had 10 game dogs over my life included 3 Labs, 1 GSP and then Viszlas. Had Corgis prior to that but they were hard working cattle dogs who enjoyed a morning hunting whenever. I have never ever given treats to any of them. A word of praise, a pat and even a cuddle for doing well. I too believe you are a bit early in what you are doing. Behaviour training is far more important at this age but slowly and carefully. My dogs have all learned good manners from the day they arrived and have always lived in as part of home life. Having said that I am not one who thinks the dog needs to be 18 months old before it needs to start learning. If it has the ability it will teach you more about hunting than you can teach it and all you need to do is channel it in my view. IF it has a TOY in early life then make sure it is YOUR toy and the dog should learn to bring it back to you naturally. When I first started dummy training I would have a small dummy in my pocket, just sticking out and as we walked I would let it drop out so the dog would see it but keep walking eventually slip the dog off the lead and ASK it to go fetch it for me. I cannot remember a time when that dog has not brought it straight back as it is not his 'play thing', it is mine. The only problem I have ever found with this is when I trained a viszla for a friend, in fact had the dog for the first six months due to his work committments. Eventually the dog was transfered but if we were pigeon flighting that dog would come and pinch some of my pigeons from alongside me and take them to his master. Very funny to see, very intelligent dog.
  15. Surely that's only when close to the border with Suffolk ????
  16. Left antler 13.2cm and that with the span measurement of 13.1 helped a great deal. Its tusks where intact and no cut ears etc. Just a small bit off the one antler tip and also one brow point tip both on the same side could have been fighting a sapling rather than another buck. Not difficult to shoot a gold medal these days and many years ago there were thoughts of upping the scores but of course that would have been a bit rough on previous medals. The CCI could perhaps introduce a Platinum score.
  17. You were a bit slow there 'rodent' but I have to agree MM.....had mine now for a year and can normally get it back in the bag on the second go.
  18. Shoot enough and long enough and I guarantee the proverbial happens. Just go out there and think SAFE!!!! Had a Sergeant Instructor once who had his S&W Model 10 in a holster but in the front of his belt and pointing at you know where !!! We all told him about it. One day on the range an ambulance came racing in down to the pistol range. You have guessed, he went to draw and the revolver went off putting a round very close to family treasures, even closer to his femoral artery, with the bullet travelling down his thigh bone to lodge on top of his knee cap. IT...shortened ...happens and can happen to us all. Regardless of how high and mighty safe you believe you are, think on it every time you handle a gun.
  19. Yep, takes a bit of killin'. To be honest anything like that I mix my Glypho a bit stronger and apply with a soft brush ...soft as possible then it doesn't flick stuff everywhere. Untreated it will spread at speed. Dropped a roe in an alder thicket in Sweden and it was a nightmare to find and drag out.
  20. Excellent. Had a couple of sessions on flight lines with moderate success close to you, but felt the pigeons had so much to choose from. Thirty is a good bag don't run yourself down.
  21. The proof of the pudding..................... Went to the farm for a few hours this afternoon. One maggie flew off as I arrived. Settled in the cabin and they slowly flowed in. Drew stumps at 5pm with six on the deck...well three in the pit. Did not retrieve those for the photo. Just shows how succesful a permanent hide can be.
  22. Choose a deer bullet/cartridge and the fox will not notice the difference. You don't have to re think anything then or faff about with different cartridges. Something in the region of 90 to 100grns will work fine and there are some good choices on the market which will all do the job if you do. Don't know if Federal still do the load/cartridge using the Nosler bullet but if they do that would be an excellent choice. Just checked and Federal do two excellent cartridges for 243 Winchester One uses the Nosler Accubond and the other the Nosler Partition having many years experience of both I can attest to their game taking ability, particularly the Accubond which I found VERY accurate in my 300H&H out to 500yrds on pronghorn.
  23. Of course oak trees have a big old tap root so can get down to some moisture but shallow rooted and poplar ar very shallow rooted are suffering.
