  1. Is it the 428 ..runs from Northampton to Bedford ..? A series of dark blue cameras on that route on high poles and average speed warning signs. Should go back to the good old days when you had a big black box on a table on the side of the road and police in uniform down the road to stop you and issue a ticket. I was one of the first to be trained on these in the 60s and a local village, Hampton in Arden, Parish Council Chairwoman made loud noises about the speed of cars through the village so our Inspector said it would be a good place to get some practise. The first motor through at 48mph was the husband of the good lady ..... we all had a chuckle over that.
  2. I was thinking the shells, but yes, your right. Certainly, horse beans and even wheat is as hard but may be moistened and softened somewhat in the crop prior to passing into the gizzard. The snail shells would not. A heron will swallow a rat or duckling whole and manages to dissolve and grind the bones so I suppose the snail shells would be no problem.
  3. As above, could not have put it better. As the old saying goes, "it is the nut behind the wheel" and in virtually all cases of the illegal use of legally held guns it has been the fault of the police force issuing the license to do the job properly and some of this is down to there not being a local Bobby these days who knew his parishoners. I go back to the times when it was the local Bobby who made the Licensing visits on his patch and submitted the report. BUT fortunately these incidents are few and far between and I'm afraid it is impossible to legislate against the occasional bad egg. Look at the incident yesterday when the airport worker stole the aircraft a situation impossible to predict but no reason to clamp down on the movements of ALL airport workers as a result.
  4. Amazing how they manage to grind those up in their gizzards. Certainly the first time I have seen it in 60yrs of cleaning pigeons.
  5. ALWAYS collected for a breakfast fry up. Yummmy
  6. When I was a kid , it used to get done with a clamp and a red hot iron ....no..no..that was on our calves but it still made you walk funny for an hour so just thinking about it. My grandfather suddenly grabbed me one time and said to the other workers, "OK, this one next!!" They didn't find me for two days and my mother went berserk at him.
  7. Not a happy bear as I can tell you. It also cost a lot of money !!!! I've never learned though, lost a couple more in a similar way over the years.
  8. ...quote ... " part of native fauna"...... so are bagers but they have devastated hedgehogs and bumble bees .....but can these so called conservationists see or accept this? Don't hold your breath. Wolves released in Slovenia are devastating the deer and will be into domestic animals next, same here I'm afraid.
  9. We have spoken before about how it is that a knife feels right in the hand and making a blank like that is a very good idea. I had a custom knife made many years ago and the maker had a lump of plastercene which he asked me to grip lightly which left an impression of my hand/fingers. He used this to judge the size of the handle. Sadly that knife is stuck in the ground somewhere as I am terrible for doing that when gralloching a deer, searched the spot but no joy. By the way my hands are also like diner plates.
  10. Although I do partially agree with you Harnser I have to take issue on calibre. I see no difference between a 308/3006 and an 8x57 or even a 375H&H, I have a 375JDJ (444 cases necked down) which does a good job on deer as well as wild boar and I had a friend who shot a 444 Marlin lever action which did an excellent job on fallow. Does a 300 Holland & Holland fit your parameters ? Excellent cartridge rarely seen today because it isn't COOL any more. It is the mind set that worries me and I do wonder sometimes why someone wants a military style rifle ..even air rifles these days .... is it to boost their ego? I don't know
  11. I would be happy to make a sheath for it but would need the knife in order to make a blank or you could send me an identical wooden blank to block the sheath out. Also have words with Linda, mels wife she does some fantastic stuff way above my pay scale. The design looks superb and I look forward to seeing it develope. Maybe a little file work on the back Hmmmmmm
  12. Don't need to watch as I remember it well. Back then all force firearms units where on demand from regular officers where ever they may be. Operational units did not come into force until much later. I remember discussing what our reaction time would have been when on our next training day and ..yes... it was over an hour.
  13. Probabaly a cotton and needle would be more useful
  14. So many grades. I have found on some I could drill no problem others was like trying to drill glass. Have not had to thread any but assume the same. Heh! but I'm no expert only what I have experienced. As with all drilling tapping...plenty of fluid.
  15. Been with Flux for two years for my V8 Landy and cannot fault them. I didn't think you could get Third Party Fire and Theft still as two other quotes I had did not do it ????? Insurance companies are the same the world over, sell you cheap the first year to capture you then watch the next year go up. As said, give 'em a call.
  16. For those of you who a) cannot afford or find enough work for a thermal etc. and b) spend a fair bit of time shooting around farm yards for verminous things, then I think I have found the perfect reasonably priced answer. I called in the electricians shop in Kettlebrook Road, Tamworth this morning for some cable and they had on show a battery operated security light, two LED lamps, batteries included...standard AAs. Has a slide/clip fixing which could be left in place or screwed to a board which could be moved and the lamp taken away when finished. Have not as yet unboxed it but will have it up and running Saturday night so I will report back. I also have some red plastic which I intend cutting to fit the lamp heads so providing a red light which a) doesn't kill our night vision and less startling...hopefully... for reynard. OK it is restricted to know approach routes etc., but at £25 plus vat well worth a try.
  17. Early 70s since I and a few pals used to drive down to Poole and charter a boat. It was large enough to sleep on so we moored at the quay side overnight. A couple of times the skipper suggested we try for some plaice and other flatties on a couple of marks in the harbour across near the race by Brownsea Island, nice and calm, very relaxing and some nice fish to grill for lunch. I suggest as above you choose a very calm day and pick a skipper who is happy to stay close in shore ....quite a race round the headland west of the harbour entrance, caught pollack, ling and conger plus bonus red bream out there BUT as I said I'm talking early 70s. My wife doesn't shoot but comes to almost all my driven days and thoroughly enjoys the day. Ace loader/cartridge empty picker.
  18. I'm slowly using mine up. Breasted about thirty and froze ready for pigeon & pork pies for elevensies on shoot days, also oven ready packed a dozen up for one of my farmers. The remainder will be treated similar, including breasting and smoking the breast meat (hot smoked) then sliced thinly with Waldorf salad they make a great starter or just sliced thin and picked at with drinks beforehand. Never much left over. Mind, I'm not shooting hundreds which do take some dealing with. I asked an acquaintance where they managed to dispose of their pigeons which drew embarrased looks..errr ..err local butcher takes some, but I had the feeling they were just dumping them as fox and badger fodder. Hope you find a taker or two .... surprised the Indian community in Coventry are not interested.
  19. Just wicked it and found that Tuna or tunny fishing as it was know back then became the sport of the mega rich. In 1930 Lawrie Mitchel-Henry hooked and landed the first rod caught tunny weighing 560lbs ..Scarborough became the Centre for the sport and the British Tunny Club was formed. That hook could well be from that era.
  20. A fair few years ago, talking maybe pre 2nd WW or just after, ardent anglers went out into the north sea and fished for tuna with some success. This hook may be from that period.
  21. Nice one. Partridge don't jink like a woodie though do they, superb sporting shooting.
  22. I was thinking more than one shooter, even then they have to be pretty smart, although nigh vision would help as the deer would not know where the danger lay if mods where also used. Used to get a spate of deer poaching down near Hereford and probably still occurs but they took one at a time on our patch ...three vehicles ..spotter...shooter ...carcase collector. Cheeky #####s gralloched one right in the farm drive one night. But this instance is weird.
  23. Good article by Alison Pearson in the Telegraph today supporting Boris and I have spoken to maybe 25 people this day so far and all you lot and have found no one who really disagrees. In fact May's attitude has sold her further down the river in most peoples eyes. Spoke with my local County Councillor this morning and when I mentioned her name he virtually told me to go away and wash my mouth out. He thought the letter box comment was priceless. I think when it cools down a bit we should have a 'Wear a Balaclava Day'.
  24. Just don't abuse your guns is the answer. Mine ride around in a 30yr old Landy over some crazy ground but I always make sure they are safe and fully supported. Never had a problem It is normally ME that shifts zero with my shaky old hands and buck fever
