Id check if you need to use steel, but if not , lead 5s.

Wary bird , so you might struggle to get into effective range.

As Eddie says, get into an ambush position before it gets light, or you will struggle, how many has the licence given to cull ?

Licence says I can shoot with no less than a 20 bore with shot that must be bigger than 6 but not excessive as in BBs I am allowed 10 this season which is now 9 as I shot my first this morning

ah the pleasure of endless waits in gateways gazing out over empty fields looks like you arrived now jacko (only joking mate) spend as much time there as you can nothing beats recon unless the bird loving neighbour cuts his beans after I just spent two days watching my side lol

OK, sound as though you have it sussed.  But shooting barren fields isn't much of a learning curve.

It’s the first time I have viewed each of these fields so ye a learning curve .. you say you would be happy to shoot a dozen on your so called perm put the hours and the mileage in and you might do one day

Time  never wasted jacko   it will come good in the future keep at it

I know this cos I listen to you experienced guys not try and alienate them..

Spending time and money on fruitless ventures isn't the ticket. You need some intelligence on the ground.

You get intelligence by doing recon yourself not someone telling you when to shoot it Is all a learning curve .. if you want something guaranteed to shoot at go to a clay ground

  5. Drove down today to look at the land Jdog passed on to me as my first perm( good man you know ) and not many birds about but with a good central view point you can see most of the acreage and it looks like it’s  got potential in the winter months.. watched different bits for a couple of hours And a few birds ( not worth setting up) about so decided to drive to another place jdog as sorted for me to shoot ( definitely a good man )  unfortunately there was no lines here either but this is pigeon shooting And I understand now more than ever how  Difficult it is to locate and shoot  pigeons think I clocked 140+ miles  For not one pull of the trigger long day but enjoyable as I learnt

I once experienced this slim (and slimmer) chance. It can happen. Quite unbelievably in my case by what proved to be a trespasser walking her dog on the other side of the hedge in which I was sat shooting over stubble.

Part way through the morning I became aware of what at first looked like two schoolgirls walking around my car parked in the corner of the field, so I wandered down to see what was going on. Getting closer I could see it was two female community support officers. We had a friendly chat, they noted my SGC No and I asked them why they were there. They said a woman had reported a man attacking a hedge with a large machete and then sitting with a gun as if waiting for somebody. She thought it suspicious and dangerous so she reported it.

I've never experienced or heard of anything similar before or since that event. But yes, it can happen.

You have to love the police a man with a machete and a gun and the send two community bobbies  I had a noise complaint  from an horrible neighbour (who  moans when a delivery van parks in front of her house) and they sent 4 cars and 8 big burly officers

Having eleven fields of rape is a very good start and I am sure you will do a good job in protecting them from pigeon damage throughout the Winter and early Spring , this will be noticed and other crop fields on the same land will sure to come your way to look after .

I will do the upmost to make my mentor proud and hopefully I may get asked to do more

For those who shoot game the cartridges are the least expensive part of a day out.

For example: a smallish day driven pheasant shooting costs circa £400. Plus a tip, say another £40. Plus travelling expenses. Say you were lucky enough to fire 2 boxes of cartridges at maybe £8/box, that’s another £16. If you were using bismuth then the cartridge cost would be £60, a difference of £44 on a day costing about £500. Not a deal breaker when looked at it like that, is it? And many days you may only shoot less than a box.

But sat in a field shooting a pigeons totally different story

Sound like a brilliant first perm and hopefully you haven't got to travel as far as the ones you are now going on , if I was you I would spend the first day checking it out for foot paths and boundaries , and if you can catch the farm manager for a quick chat then that would be an advantage , also check out if there is a game keeper or if any game shooting is taken place over any of the farm land as some farms around here pool there land for a inter farm shoot , where I go they have got my s g c number and when it run out , they have also got my car reg number and they know I am insured , so it won't do you any harm to offer the same , then is somebody report your car tucked in under the hedge they will then know who it is , rather than send somebody to check it out .

PS , if you can get a map of the farm land and where the various crops are going in that will also be a big help.

GOOD LUCK and keep us informed :good:

I have a map of the rape fields of which is all I am permitted shoot at the moment I believe 11 Fields in all  I have been checking google maps out 2 fields look as if there is a footpath through them but will know more when I get down there on Saturday to have a look round and no doubt I will be texting jdog asking more questions
